That's because his first statement was a lie. Almost all classical sources say she was either 6 or 7 when she got married and 9 when the marriage was consummated.
Islam has their dumbass Hadith system which allows multiple contradictory things to still be part of the religion. There are "authentic" hadith saying she was 6 and "authentic" hadith saying she was older. Muslims will jump between these different "authentic" scholarly positions as it suits them.
So he wants to maintain the idea that Muhammad wasn't a pedophile without disputing the VAST majority of Muslim scholarship saying he was.
