I usually agree with these sorts of things, but I do find it hard to criminally charge a 12-year old. Her family, yes, absolutely. But at 12, the brain is not yet developed enough to deal with long term implications or thinking about consequences. In my country, kids only become criminally liable at 14, because that is the age they are determined to be developmentally far enough to understand crime and the effects thereof. Until then, they try to correct the behaviour through therapy, family counceling and education, even in severe cases such as violence, murder, (animal) abuse or similar.

EXACTLY!!!! YES press charges. The damage done by false accusations especially to ACCUAL VICTUMS is majorly bad. I simply believe that a 12 year old brain is not developed enough to understand and therefore be punished for the long-term consequences of "lying about being SA'd by an adult" (when, at that age, they're not even old nough to understand and give consent). Her family needs to be charged, but I think she needs councelling/therapy, not to be arrested and brought to court.

12 is still a kid but that is hardly what I'd call a child. A 12 year old is smart enough to know the damage they can do with an accusation like that, and this kid's parents should have taught her about the importance of being honest and not lying. So I say absolutely yes. Sue the kid in civil court. Make her parents pay for the legal defense, and for the settlement. That'll be their penalty for not teaching their kid not to lie.

I mean, it is actually like knocking over a delicate vase, shattering it and sometime later reluctantly giving the owner some cheap glue to put it back together themselves. The work rebuilding will be exhausting and the cracks will never disappear. Some bits might even be missing forever.
The damage is there, and it will stay there for everyone to see, forever. What the OP needs is the real-life equivalent of Kintsugi. Where the cracks are mended professionally and gilded to make art out of the damage, to add value to what was lost and return some sense of purpose to the item.

Yep. I agree 100%. Actions have consequences. There was a woman I used to know who had two kids, one from each marriage. They were seven years apart in age, with the half-sister being the oldest. The spoiled younger half-brother was treated as if he was the second coming of Christ and was bulletproof. The mother doted on him because she had ’always wanted a boy.’ He got away with everything and as a result of being raised by an extremely self-absorbed mother who treated her kids like they were an extension of herself, at bare minimum, he grew up to have no respect for boundaries, zero regard for the word no being a complete sentence and nothing resembling a sense of accountability. I had warned her, for years, that she wasn't doing her son any favors by not preparing them from the realities of the real world i.e. that the rest of the world wasn't going to put up with his crap and treat him like he could walk on water. Because I'm male, single and adamantly child-free, she just missed everything I had to say as I “didn't know” what I was talking about. I did not accept her response and pointed at her obvious sexism. Being the arrogant waste of space that she is, she refused to accept that a woman can be sexist towards a man. Yes. She's one of those.
I chose to let it go and I knew reality would eventually slap both her and her brat son in the face. Well, that came when the daughter, graduated high school then flew the coop by going in the military. This left dear old malingering mommy (who was more concerned with smoking, drinking, getting her nails and hair done) to finally contend with the monster she had raised.
Before cutting contact with her, I remember there being two instances where she realized she had screwed up. When her son was about 12 and got his butt beat at school and she flipped out claiming she would sue but was so broke she couldn't even afford to pay attention. You better believe I pointed this all out to her and finished by saying “I told you so.” Then about two years later, when he was 14 and dwarfed her in size, he got kicked out of school for a variety of infractions i.e. truancy, fighting, disrespect towards fellow students as well as staff, vandalism, etc. his mother, naturally pulled focus and made the whole thing about her and not the fact that she had failed her son in every way possible.
You may be wondering where his father was in all of this he was an upwardly mobile blue collar worker who is often on the road for months on end. He was the disciplinarian, but unsurprisingly, his wife was the one who constantly undermined at any attempted discipline and thus their lack of communication or agreement on any course of action led to a dichotomy in their marriage.
Ask for her son getting kicked out of school, his mother would not shut up wondering “what went wrong” with her life. I waited for her to run out of breath then I asked if she was finished. My response clearly pissed her off because it meant I wasn't taking her seriously. I reiterated what I had told her years earlier, that I had warned her that she wasn't doing her son any favors by not teaching, disciplining or raising him right. A gas that I dared call out her parenting or mothering skills, she decided to go off on me. I just put the phone down and waited for her to finish. Completely ignoring everything she had said I simply thanked her. She was confused. I told her I have thanked her for her dumpster fire of a life being a lesson and reaffirming every reason for a while I was single, probably would never get married and for why I was adamantly child-free. This set her off. She started screaming at me and I hung up while she was in mid-rant. I cut contact with her nearly eleven years ago and haven't heard from her since.
I did hear through the grapevine, that her daughter is doing quite well for herself, is now an RN, but tragically, just like her mother, already has one failed marriage behind her. I heard, allegedly, her mother kept treating her daughter like a piggy bank but never paying her back and that led to strife in her daughter's marriage and they ended up in splitsville. I also heard, that that was the last straw for her daughter and she cut her mother off from her only grandchild. I'm sure that part stings like hell. As for the spoiled son? He turned out predictably the way one would expect. I heard, allegedly, he's now and unemployed, arrogant 20-something man-child with no life skills, no respect, no direction in life who totally expects the world to bend over backwards for him while giving him everything he wants through no effort on his part. In other words, he grew up to be just like his garbage mother.

I used to know someone just like the mother. She never had gas in her car or her license would be suspended because she was so financially illiterate and beyond irresponsible that she never had any money for life's necessities. She burned through every connection she had with friends and family because she was nothing but a leech.
I remember one time I was driving her somewhere and she was smoking in my car. I instructed her to put it out because I didn't allow smoking in my car. This was the type of person who never had money for necessities or utilities, but seemingly always had her hair done, her nails done, a full pack of cigarettes and booze in the fridge. Naturally, she didn't like being told what to do but complied and flick the cigarette out the window. Her son, who was approximately seven years old at the time, was bouncing around and acting up in the car. Far too old to be behaving that way and not know that you must sit still and stay seatbelt it in while in a moving vehicle. For the record, he was not neurodivergent or on the spectrum in any way shape or form he was just a very spoiled brat who had never been disciplined or ever had any follow through after receiving an idle threat from his mother. Well, he kept distracting me and I nearly got in a car accident. I used some choice words to tell him to sit down, put his seatbelt on and surprisingly he listened.
His mother started yelling at me and slapping my arm. I pulled into a parking lot, slammed on and told them both to get the hell out of my car. She laughed like an idiot as if I was kidding. I reiterated my order and told them to get out. The brat had the nerve to yell at me “don't you talk to my mama like that.” I yelled at him and used more choice words and told him to get out. He immediately band crying. Whether or not he was scared or was simply turning on the waterworks, much like his mother taught him, because he wasn't getting his way, is anybody's guess..The fun part is she, because she was so broke she couldn't even afford to pay attention, she had guilt tripped me into going and buying groceries for her. Well, my trunk was full of groceries for her house that I was now keeping. The brat son was standing in the parking lot crying, his mother was screaming at me as I threw her purse out the window and it emptied all over the parking lot. She then had the nerve to yell at me “what about my groceries?” I told her: “I paid for them. They're my groceries.” As I was driving away, I hollered out the window to have her neighbor, who was a stay-at-home mom, come get her.
Will dear old malingering mommy didn't waste any time and took to social media to bad-mouth me to anyone who would listen. Once I told the truth, people generally agreed that that “sounded like something she would do.” Even her upwardly mobile husband, who was working out in the midwest, contacted me and asked me what happened. I told him everything. He believed me because he knew how his wife was and how she let her son run roughshod all over everyone by not teaching him right. I told the husband, that I didn't want to see or hear from his wife again until she learned how to respect other people and teach their son that he can't be a total butthole who thinks he walks on diamonds and gold. Her husband totally understood. I also added that if he didn't drive home the point that if his wife didn't stop harassing me in the form of slander and libel, that I would sue the family. That got is attention. Unsurprisingly, my friendship with this woman didn't last much longer.

Firstly 12 is not “just a child” with regard to understanding the huge significance of accusing someone of that. My daughter is 13 and knows what happens to people who do that to kids. It doesn’t matter that he wasn’t put on trial - there will always be people who turn around and say there is no smoke without fire. If you don’t sue that will be worse. The 12 year olds consequences won’t be huge (and she absolutely needs to have some) and the family SHOULD be held accountable for their actions. That is the worst thing you can ever accuse anyone of and it doesn’t sound as though the girl came clean - just that the police found no evidence. That leaves doubt there and suing them reflects what he will have to live with. Having had something happen to me at not much older than that girl,I can’t understand how or why anyone would make that up. It’s a horrible situation where she decided to ruin somebody’s life because she felt like it. People like her make it harder on those of us who actually go through it to believed. The same is true when it’s children or adults making it up and I fully believe there need to be big consequences for that.

Story #5: This reminds me of a similar story of a false accusation. Basically a guy tried to frame their preacher for being a p word. At first his plan worked when the police seized the preachers laptop as part of their investigation, and the guy who made the false accusations made sure that everyone knew why. Suddenly everyone who had previously loved the preacher wanted him gone. A few days later the police publicly cleared the preacher of any wrongdoing and arrested the guy who planted the evidence. But even that STILL wasn't enough to change people's minds, they still thought the preacher was a p word and wanted him gone even though he had done nothing wrong and been publicly cleared by law enforcement. The preacher had to ask to be reassigned to another church at least 6+ hours away where no one had ever heard of the false accusations against him. So yeah, OP in story #5 should file the lawsuit and move somewhere far away.

She's dyslexic, and absolutely stresses out when I tell her to turn "right" or "left." It confuses her. So when i'm giving directions, I have to put my hand out close to the windshield, and very clearly point to where she needs to turn, and say "At the next light, you're going to turn that way." Story 3: the thing I wanna focus on is OP feeling bad. Honestly, because I wonder if the only reason he feels so bad is because that was his mom. Like, he has no reason to be sorry, and if it was anyone else he probably wouldn’t be or at least wouldn’t be quick to feel guilty about it. Whether intentional or not parents usually have his way of making their kids feel guilty for calling them out, and it’s because you’re the kid they’re the parent you’re not supposed to call them out. Or at least not so blatantly you have to tiptoe around calling them out otherwise it’s disrespectful.
But OP is 21, meaning he’s coming into the milestone where he’s going to once and need his parents to see him laugh at their kid and more as an adult. And I don’t mean he can start disrespecting his mother and in salt or anything like that. But he shouldn’t have to tiptoe to get his point across, and his mother can’t just call him, disrespectful for not letting her say or do whatever she wants to him.
I’ve been through something similar with my mom. She doesn’t do intentionally, but that doesn’t make any less annoying.

The first story: As someone who once had three toxic stepsisters, and an equally toxic stepmother, this one really hits home. I was the bullied kid and the sad part, my own blood brother fell right in line while turning a blind eye and a deaf ear watching it all happen. He often joined in on the bullying. Even worse, all of his friends at school were my bullies. I suppose I got a little bit of schadenfreude after he had a falling out with the ringleader of his group and they got in a fight to where my brother got his butt kicked. I wouldn't give him any sympathy.
It got to the point that I was getting an ulcer midway through my first year of middle school. Naturally, my dad and my stepmom didn't believe but my mom took me to a doctor and it was confirmed I had was developing an ulcer. I remember being grilled by my stepmom and my dad like I was a hostile witness in a criminal case and they were the D.A.
Because my mom was the one to take me to the doctor, my stepmom and dad acted like I had been overreacting. I guarantee you if my father was the one who had taken me to the doctor, he would have treated like it was a federal case and then blames my mom for not taking care of me right.
Long story short, my dad eventually realized that my stepmom was a total psycho who would flip out if the throw pillows on the couch were crooked, that her daughter with a chip off the same narcissistic block and the two older stepdaughters were no better but at least they were finally grown and out of the house. The last straw, came for him when he walked in on my stepmom threatening to hit me and then bringing back her hand to slap me. Apparently it wasn't okay for anyone else to hit his kids but him. And getting her away from me and her eyes were bugging out of her head like a Felix the Cat clock. Adding some backstory, my stepmom had been beaten and brutalized by her first husband yet she came full circle and went from being a victim to an abuser herself.
