- Here are the economic performance of the major economies in Southeast Asia in the first half of 2022.
Southeast Asia’s major economies are on an upward trajectory as the region continues to recover from the severe impact brought by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, disrupting the world supply chain and resulting in a dramatic increase in commodity prices.
In the first 6 months of the year, the growth leader in the region was the Philippines expanding by 8.2% in the first quarter, supplemented by 7.4% in the second quarter. Followed by Malaysia with an impressive growth of 8.9% in the second quarter, from the moderate growth rate of 5% in the first quarter. Coming closer is Vietnam with sustained growth of 5.03% in the first quarter and its fastest growth pace for a decade of 7.7% in the second quarter.
While Southeast Asia’s Biggest Economy maintained its growth rate of 5.01% and 5.4% in the first and second quarters, respectively. Likewise, Singapore’s economy managed to grow by 4% and 4.4% in the past 2 quarters. Meanwhile, Thailand’s recovery is the slowest in the region growing by 2.2% in the first quarter, and 2.5% in the second quarter. The country’s current economy is still below its pre-pandemic economic size.
The region’s economic outlook is the most optimistic among the emerging market economy in the world. Where the full-year growth rate for the Philippines is expected in the range of 6.5 to 7.5%. Vietnam at 6 to 7%. Malaysia at 5.3 to 6.3%. Indonesia’s full-year growth rate projection is at 4.5 to 5.3%. Singapore at 3 to 5%, and Thailand is expected to grow at 2.7 to 3.2%. According to Asian Development Bank, the 2022 forecast for Southeast Asia is marginally upgraded from 4.9 to 5% as domestic demand benefits from the continued lifting of COVID-19 mobility restrictions and the reopening of borders in some economies in the subregion.

The Philippines has always had a potential to be more developed country if most of the elected leaders or officials if not all are nationalistic public servants. Despite some issues, hoping that this economic growth will be seen consistently better as time goes by.

When Cory Aquino ousted Marcos by a people revolt, it disrupted the Philippines path into greatness. From the Rising Tiger of Asia, it fell down into a hapless stray kitten. After three decades the Marcos son won the presidency by majority vote, the people hoping for the promise of a greater Philippines in continuation to his father's legacy.

For 20 years of governance, was there a big improvement seen instantly? I could say that we are way better than before. It's just that after marcos, and aquino's admin, the real corrupt Erap and Arroyo who led the philippines for a second term of their presidency caused a lot of difficulty to make the philippines a great nation. Obviously, they were guilty and convicted for imprisonement but now look! Arroyo came back as representative again. Filipinos are really forgetful. Every citizen of each country is always proud of their respective countries. That's fair and reasonable.
Whatever, let's support all countries in one region, namely the ASEAN region.
No one country is perfect. Each country depends on each other and must cooperate with each other.

I believe Malaysia can reach 7-8% growth this year. High commodity prices which will positively affect the economy, new wave of foreign direct investments so far this year, a surge in electronic chips demand which Malaysia is one of the biggest exporters, etc. Also lets not forget Malaysia had a severe lockdown in Q3 last year. I am expecting this year Q3, with the economy opening again, and a huge increase of foreign tourists. Malaysia will see a very2 strong year on year Quarter 3 increase. I hope Malaysia can reach at least 7% GDP growth.

The Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia's impressive growth are actually cannot simply compare to Indonesia and Singapore's Statistics. These two latter countries already achieved big that their economic stats are bit lower compare to their neighboring country. Their stats are like economic stats of China and USA. Im actually impress to Indonesia's economic status. Hope Phil will be on that status "again" (remember Marcos regimen make PHL remarkable in the world)
Singapore isnt a big country. Its one of the smallest country in ASEAN. It is a lot more developed and in that sense. Yes, its not realistic for their economy to grow as fast as the other nations on this video as they are developing. Indonesia is the largest in ASEAN but they are not in the same league as the US or China. The US economy is 20x bigger than Indonesia, China is 17x bigger. Indonesia should have higher economic growth. It is still a developing nation. Growth will slow once the economy reaches developed status. Size has nothing to do with it.

The main problem of my country🇵🇭 is the Climate......Developing agriculture would be doom crisis because the geopgraphy of this country was prone to earthquake....volcanic eruption......Massive flash floods.... typhoons...landslides....el niño....la niña....also here in mindanao where prone to muslim and NPA civil wars....they always destroy our livelihood in mindanao burning our crops and kidnapping our foriegn tourist and asking more huge ransom......and also our geography is archipelago More island and its very difficult to connect our routes to deliver every resources through cities.....The typhoon is our biggest threat they always destroy our buildings and resources that create massive calamity......and some currupt officials brainwashing our people only few are rightfull politicians like tulfo,marcos,duterte and Its very worrying because of teenage pregnancy reason of our rapid population inflating the reason of no birth control and our government struggles on it.....one of students stresses in the philippines are teachers corruption they are forcing many students to contribute money for schools propaganda instead government providing it like paintings in chairs....floorwax and every school maintenance....some of our childrens are malnourish because lack of money to buy some food and there are few of job vaccancies can only find in this country so our citizens force to work abroad as OFW......and some doctors ignore many poor patiens due to huge population doctors can't accomodate them well....its hard to monitor my country because of its geography an massive group of islands making government stunningly to manage.......where asking for United states to support us

When PH released the 2nd Quarter GDP growth, the common reaction from PH and foreign economists was muted. Why not in a celebration mood? Mainly, the median forecast was not lower than 8%. I think it was explained by Finance Secretary that if inflation was not that high, PH growth for 2nd quarter would have hit 8.2% to 8.4%.

For the Philippines to be more economically successful and powerful, it has to impose more policies that make the country more self-sufficient and efficient when it comes to production, manufacturing, business management, and employment. Infrastructure is also good but the management of the COVID-19 economy recovery must be done first for things to go smoothly. Decentralizing the businesses, infrastructures, urban assets, and production facilities in the NCR and Manila should also happen so that every area and city in the country can have equal amounts of assets and facilities to work with so that they can improve their local economy.

FDI or capital inflow is already part of GDP growth computation. The figure for PH is correct.

Thailand has the slowest growth rate because it is a fully developed economy with a median age of 40 years old. Basically its already a european country relocated in south east asia. Philippines is more akin to an African country with an unbelievably young 24 year old median age and still they are building bridges and infrastructure. Bridge building is one of the biggest drivers of GDP growth
i disagree, thailand is in what we call “middle income trap”, wherein it cannot fully develop like the developed countries. This is due to multiple reasons, one of which you have indicated already, its aging population will slow its growth as it will reduce the number of working population, and thus less products will be produced. another reason is its lack of innovation, thailand does not have innovative companies, Thailand is basically just a factory of bigger nations such as toyota, isuzu, etc. there is no transfer of technology, that is why tpThailand, despite producing millions of cars per year, does not have a national car brand of their own. Comparing thailand to a developed European country is laughable, more like eastern europe.
Philippines on the other hand has a good demography for a developing country, having a young population means larger workforce, the country must utilize it within a decade or two to achieve great economic growth. it having a young population is not surprising as the country is predominantly catholic, which is one of the greater reason for its explosive fertility rate. Philippines being one of the first to develop and adopt to new technologies in the region during the 30s-70s, it missed the opportunity among the first asian tigers due to political instability. It is therefore imperative that is has a strong and stable political landscape in order to attract investments and spur home-grown tech companies. That being said, it is unfair to liken the philippines to an african country (also, generalizing the continent of africa is ignorant and racist), due to it having a larger middle income population and adept to those of western countries, ill probably like philippines to some central american countries, politically volatine, but can provide good products and services.
