Yanis Varoufakis is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom. It's wonderful how he frames everything in terms of incentives and human psychology. It makes his thinking very clear and consistent. I'm tired of most modern economists who pretend that incentives and human psychology don't matter and who talk about everything in terms of cherry-picked models, manipulated formulas and statistics. Too many economists today are all smoke and mirrors; they never even try to explain why things are the way they are.

But believe me there are others who have a far more critical view of him, his arguments and his policy as a former Minister of Finance. But I have to admit that as a Minister of Finance he succeeded in one effort most others would have failed: he united 18 Eurozone Finance minister against the then Greek government and alienated in no time politicians who sympathised at the beginning with the government he was a part of.

Yanis is a great academic and as a great academic has the talent of being able to rationalize complex topics with clear communication. Great interview! The biggest drama of all this is that currently socialism exists for the elites, which are constantly bailed out by the governments, the rest of the society lives under market rules and austerity. This will sink the so-called west if not addressed now, we are nearing the point of no return.

But i must hand it to you Escaped Sapiens for good questions and managing to hold Varoufakis (who i like very much) to neat compartmented questions. He is someone I would love to meet, but equally I am new to your channel, now a subscriber . YV is great - what he didn’t explain was how “money printing” by definition devalues a currency and creates inflation. Conservatives emphasize that government handouts create inflation (furlough in the UK and Trump’s cheques), it does, but the money printing for the banks far exceeds any such handouts and is the key driver of inflation of assets.
The last step in the lifecycle of money is taxation. Money printing must be offset by "burning" the money at the end of its journey from the Fed, the central banks, commercial banks, smaller banks, employer, wage earners, consumer goods producers, service providers, etc. If the money is not intelligently taxed back out of the system you will see inflation everywhere there is "too much money chasing too few goods." New housing and rent prices are high because hedge funds and wealthy individuals literally have too much money to spend on cash purchases, and workers are left with record debt, 30 year high interest rates, and historically depressed wages. Fiat currency has led to massive corruption where, as you said, the gains are privatized, the losses are socialized, and the tax system is rigged against the majority for the benefit of the few. It's unsustainable.

The idea of the production-distribution-financialisation process being overturned with the end of feudalism in the 18th c so that it became financialisation-distribution-production. I've seen a couple dozen of his talks, and he is always enthused about describing economical processes in a way that we students can grasp. Mr. Varoufakis sticks to a thinking process most of us continue to have; which is thinking in nation states or countries. In reality the financial system and economies are being controlled and destructed by private (central) banks, at least since WW1, being solidified at the end of WW2 through Breton Woods and the establishment of its controlling mechanism IMF, Worldbank, but also the Federal Reserve. The resulting debt-based banking system, being the biggest crime of the century, has enslaved all IMF-member states, thus nearly the planet as a whole. If anyone refused to comply, they just start to sanction them, inflict a regime change or induce a war. So, it doesn't make sense to point fingers at German or English banks, because they're owned by the same shareholders. There are 3 investment conglomerates controlling at least 2 times the global GDP. This is what we're dealing with, concentration and centralization of wealth, power and control. However, their system of enslavement came to an end in 2008 and saw its final collapse in September 2019 (repo-crash). That's why they came up with crisis after crisis, to be able to direct taxpayers' dollars to their pockets. "Climate" is the same story, funneling public money to their multi-nationals - socializing debt and capitalizing profits. The digitalization or digital concentration camps as I tend to call them, including digital IDs, QR-codes and CBDCs is their final goal to remain in power. The EU is a spin off of Wall Street and Washington and is doomed to fail, as long as they don't separate from the global banking mob. Russia, among others understood and took action. The solution is to build up decentralized, local banking systems, controlled by the people, to be able to hold people accountable. And that's exactly what's already happening. I don't know if Yanis Varoufakis reads these posts, but if he does I'd like him to address this matter: We all know that the very existence of finance -- lending money for interest -- requires ever expanding the money supply, therefore ever expanding the economy. But the WORLD cannot ex- pand, so this affair cannot go on w/out ending--obviously. Yet no economist has addressed this. Varoufakis is the smartest of the lot. Speak to this, please!

It is very understandable that somebody who governed an over indepted country advocates for debt withdrawal. This is called facilism. But if you check the greek case, austerity was very virtuous, since today Greece ceased to produce additional debt while its economy keeps growing and greeks gaining wealth while other countries that didnt go thru those reforms, like France, are sinking into debt.
It's concerning to see a growing sense of unease, of disenfranchisement, particularly amongst younger people developing across the world, mostly in 'the West. There are obvious indicators but perhaps the core issue exists at an existential level. Perhaps Yanis recognises this.
Varoufakis is one of these people that I agree in 90% of the stuff he says, my disagreements are not that strong in the rest 10%, he is a Marxist/socialist and I am a believer in free markets. Not sure how this happens. In any case, I always enjoy listening to him because he sees things from a different perspective than me, for just about everything - and that's refreshing.
Yanis is a briliant man, but unwilling to draw real conclusions. Of course governments should take control of the banks, of course they should stop creating debt and start writing it off, of course capital should be redistributed toward the masses - but none of these things will be done. Therefore the question I would like to hear someone answer is what can we do to avoid anarchy, war, civil war, revolution and bodies hanging from lamp posts? Because that seems to be the default trajectory.

Great podcast! Yanis is a gem. I would expand on the "Debt is a claim on future wealth " point by exploring what underpins all human wealth which is I suggest extraction of resources from the earth. Ultimately debt is a claim on future extraction. On a planet with finite resources, infinite debts can not be repaid by the earth system. When the earth system fails there will be no rolling it over. Any economic system which does not recognize its dependency on the eco-system that provides all the outputs and absorbs all it's waste is doomed to fail. Failure to live sustainably on your home planet is I suspect the true Great Filter.

It's not too late to come over to the light side. Right wing economics has simply been a failure for the US and UK, where you have the most right wing economics. Social democracies of Northern and western Europe are simply superior societies based on nearly all obvectivr measures like life expectancy, violence, etc.
I am lucky not to be an economist. So I can think about economics with great freedom by piecing together seemingly unconnected fragments of historical events. In their book, the great explorers of the jungles of central Brazil refer to the humanitarian nature of the indigenous economy: “… moitará is an important practice in the Xingu culture. It's a whole trade based on exchange. And the value of the objects negotiated is calculated by the time spent working on each one. Each tribe has its specialization in a certain activity.” ( THE MARCH TO THE WEST, Orlando Villas Bôas and Cláudio Villas Bôas, Companhia das Letras, 2012, p. 332) A little further on, after detailing what each tribe manufactured and traded in the moitará, the Villas Bôas recount an impressive example of “solidarity economy” and civilization. The example is so good, beautiful and fair, that it should serve as an example for us, who call ourselves civilized and who, however, practice increasingly irrational and destructive varieties of a capitalism described by the left as “savage” (although the expression “savage capitalism” is a contradiction in terms if we take into account the example of a “solidarity economy” and highly civilized given by savages). The Villas Boas report that: “Yesterday we witnessed a symbolic exchange between two villages - Kamaiurá and Trumai. The trumai were in a serious feeding crisis. Yanis Varoufakis is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom. It's wonderful how he frames everything in terms of incentives and human psychology. It makes his thinking very clear and consistent.
I'm tired of most modern economists who pretend that incentives and human psychology don't matter and who talk about everything in terms of cherry-picked models, manipulated formulas and statistics.
Too many economists today are all smoke and mirrors; they never even try to explain why things are the way they are.

The biggest drama of all this is that currently socialism exists for the elites, which are constantly bailed out by the governments, the rest of the society lives under market rules and austerity. This will sink the so-called west if not addressed now, we are nearing the point of no return.

I've listened to Varoufakis in a number of videos - TY, the 'news', other channels. He's often dealing with complex questions on a complex subject! But i must hand it to you Escaped Sapiens for good questions and managing to hold Varoufakis (who i like very much) to neat compartmented questions. He is someone I would love to meet, but equally I am new to your channel, now a subscriber . YV is great - what he didn’t explain was how “money printing” by definition devalues a currency and creates inflation.

That's exactly how the scam FIAT fractional reserve banking system was designed, as the world's largest ponzi pyramid.
The last step in the lifecycle of money is taxation. Money printing must be offset by "burning" the money at the end of its journey from the Fed, the central banks, commercial banks, smaller banks, employer, wage earners, consumer goods producers, service providers, etc. If the money is not intelligently taxed back out of the system you will see inflation everywhere there is "too much money chasing too few goods."

Mr. Varoufakis sticks to a thinking process most of us continue to have; which is thinking in nation states or countries.
In reality the financial system and economies are being controlled and destructed by private (central) banks, at least since WW1, being solidified at the end of WW2 through Breton Woods and the establishment of its controlling mechanism IMF, Worldbank, but also the Federal Reserve. The resulting debt-based banking system, being the biggest crime of the century, has enslaved all IMF-member states, thus nearly the planet as a whole. If anyone refused to comply, they just start to sanction them, inflict a regime change or induce a war.
So, it doesn't make sense to point fingers at German or English banks, because they're owned by the same shareholders. There are 3 investment conglomerates controlling at least 2 times the global GDP. This is what we're dealing with, concentration and centralization of wealth, power and control.
However, their system of enslavement came to an end in 2008 and saw its final collapse in September 2019 (repo-crash). That's why they came up with crisis after crisis, to be able to direct taxpayers' dollars to their pockets. "Climate" is the same story, funneling public money to their multi-nationals - socializing debt and capitalizing profits. The digitalization or digital concentration camps as I tend to call them, including digital IDs, QR-codes and CBDCs is their final goal to remain in power.
The EU is a spin off of Wall Street and Washington and is doomed to fail, as long as they don't separate from the global banking mob. Russia, among others understood and took action.
The solution is to build up decentralized, local banking systems, controlled by the people, to be able to hold people accountable. And that's exactly what's already happening. Because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I don't know if Yanis Varoufakis reads these posts, but if he does I'd like him to address this matter: We all know that the very existence of finance -- lending money for interest -- requires ever expanding the money supply, therefore ever expanding the economy. It is very understandable that somebody who governed an over indepted country advocates for debt withdrawal. This is called facilism. But if you check the greek case, austerity was very virtuous, since today Greece ceased to produce additional debt while its economy keeps growing and greeks gaining wealth while other countries that didnt go thru those reforms, like France, are sinking into debt.
It's concerning to see a growing sense of unease, of disenfranchisement, particularly amongst younger people developing across the world,
mostly in 'the West. There are obvious indicators but perhaps the core issue exists at an existential level. Perhaps Yanis recognises this.

Great podcast! Yanis is a gem. I would expand on the "Debt is a claim on future wealth " point by exploring what underpins all human wealth which is I suggest extraction of resources from the earth. Ultimately debt is a claim on future extraction. On a planet with finite resources, infinite debts can not be repaid by the earth system. When the earth system fails there will be no rolling it over. Any economic system which does not recognize its dependency on the eco-system that provides all the outputs and absorbs all it's waste is doomed to fail. Failure to live sustainably on your home planet is I suspect the true Great Filter.

It's not too late to come over to the light side. Right wing economics has simply been a failure for the US and UK, where you have the most right wing economics. Social democracies of Northern and western Europe are simply superior societies based on nearly all obvectivr measures like life expectancy, violence, etc.

I am lucky not to be an economist. So I can think about economics with great freedom by piecing together seemingly unconnected fragments of historical events. In their book, the great explorers of the jungles of central Brazil refer to the humanitarian nature of the indigenous economy:
“… moitará is an important practice in the Xingu culture. It's a whole trade based on exchange. And the value of the objects negotiated is calculated by the time spent working on each one. Each tribe has its specialization in a certain activity.” ( THE MARCH TO THE WEST, Orlando Villas Bôas and Cláudio Villas Bôas, Companhia das Letras, 2012, p. 332)
A little further on, after detailing what each tribe manufactured and traded in the moitará, the Villas Bôas recount an impressive example of “solidarity economy” and civilization. The example is so good, beautiful and fair, that it should serve as an example for us, who call ourselves civilized and who, however, practice increasingly irrational and destructive varieties of a capitalism described by the left as “savage” (although the expression “savage capitalism” is a contradiction in terms if we take into account the example of a “solidarity economy” and highly civilized given by savages). The Villas Boas report that:
“Yesterday we witnessed a symbolic exchange between two villages - Kamaiurá and Trumai.
The trumai were in a serious feeding crisis. In their fields, still young, there wasn't a single cassava root.
In the exchange-trade, the two groups were placed in front of each other, and between them there was a small plot of one to two square meters, previously swept away.
Chief Trumai, on that occasion, explained to those present the situation in his village with regard to food. Having said that, he placed a small ball of pequi dough (the size of a grain of corn) in the center of the small yard, and asked for cassava dough in exchange. Tamacu, the Kamaiurá chief, incontinently picked it up, took a minuscule particle from it and put it in his mouth, offering it afterwards to those of his village. Several heads of house came forward and imitated the cacique. Moments later, the wives of those who had tasted the pequi placed huge baskets of dry cassava bread in the same place. A few hundred pounds.
Without waiting, we witnessed a beautiful demonstration of solidarity, and it is also necessary to take into account that these Indians were bitter enemies for years.” (A MARCHA PARA OESTE, Orlando Villas Bôas and Cláudio Villas Bôas, Companhia das Letras, 2012, p. 333/334).
I cited this episode in detail because it makes us think. Little of this indigenous civility and solidarity characterized the first Workers' Party governments in Brazil. Under the command of the Lula/Dilma governments, the Brazilian State tried to recreate and modernize experiences such as those reported by the Villas Bôas brothers with the Bolsa Família (income for those who do not have) and Prouni (public university education for those who do not) programs. The two programs suffered intense opposition from some sectors that consider themselves “more civilized” in Brazilian society. The result of the reaction of the owners of the big money was a coup d'état in 2016 and the pandemic genocide commanded by Bolsonaro.
Now I jump back in time and mention two episodes that I consider relevant.
“Most of the coins lost their value. Doctor Heinrich Roos would recall seeing a soldier from Württemberg sitting by the roadside outside Orsha with a silver bar in his lap, begging someone to exchange it for any scraps of food. No one, however, was prepared to give up rations that could save their lives in exchange for a silver bar that would only have value when they returned home. The only reaction he managed to elicit from the men who shuffled past him was a torrent of cruel jokes. Even women’s last resort - prostitution - had become worthless under the circumstances.” (1812 - Napoleon's fatal march towards Moscow, Adam Zamoyski, Editora Record, Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo, 2013, p. 433)
“Colonel Seruzier of the light artillery of the 2nd Montbrun Cavalry Division was luckier than most. He was captured by Cossacks just as he was about to cross the Niemen back. He was wounded, as well as stripped and robbed, and forced to march barefoot through the snow in bitter cold. He complained about the treatment he was receiving when he was brought before Platov, but received a dismissive rebuke. Fortunately for Seruzier, Platov's son took pity on him, and, after bandaging his wounds, gave him some rags to wear. It would have made little difference when he was dispatched under the charge of Cossack guards had it not been for a stroke of extraordinary good fortune that presented itself to him when he encountered a Russian colonel whom he had imprisoned at Austerlitz seven years before and whom he had treated with courtesy. The colonel gave him clothes and money, and personally recommended him, with threats, to the commander of the convoy.” (1812 - Napoleon's fatal march towards Moscow, Adam Zamoyski, Editora Record, Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo, 2013, p. 513)
Everything the French plundered in Smolensk and Moscow had to be abandoned on the way back. Not even the carts with the treasure plundered by Napoleon reached France. Gold and silver objects ceased to be valuable, as the only things that really had value were the tattered clothes, improvised warm clothes and extremely scarce food. The compassion of an enemy treated kindly in the past, on the other hand, has turned into an extremely valuable currency.
What unites the experience of the Brazilian Indians reported by Villas Boas brothers and the significant episode of the painful withdrawal of Napoleon's troops from Russia narrated by Adam Zamoyski is the marginal uselessness of money (and things normally considered valuable) in crisis situations. Yanis Varoufakis compared money to light to say that it has a dual nature. The immense value that the compassion of one human being for another in a situation of extreme need can have is a kind of Event Horizon in a Black Hole from which not even light can escape.
I guess the value of money collapses if it can't lubricate transactions (if there are no transactions to be had in crisis). The brazilian example interests me as a window into another way of doing things. Having grown up in our current system, it's easy to lose imagination for different possibilities of organizing our monetary systems.
