Yanis Varoufakis is a fountain of knowledge and wisdom. It's wonderful how he frames everything in terms of incentives and human psychology. It makes his thinking very clear and consistent.
I'm tired of most modern economists who pretend that incentives and human psychology don't matter and who talk about everything in terms of cherry-picked models, manipulated formulas and statistics.
Too many economists today are all smoke and mirrors; they never even try to explain why things are the way they are.

In any case, are we always to spoil the pleasures of listening to sages with suspicions, negativity and with judgmental hearts? Yanis Varoufakis, a recognised Greek sage, could comfortably sit and muse with his renowned forebears Aristotle and Plato. And, what about you? Perhaps, your negatively judgemental answer to Yanis will be presented in a podcast of your own very soon from which we might equally sigh and swoon over for its poetic delivery of ideas and truths ~ aye?

@@JoseighBlogs He might be recognised by some as a Greek "sage". But believe me there are others who have a far more critical view of him, his arguments and his policy as a former Minister of Finance. But I have to admit that as a Minister of Finance he succeeded in one effort most others would have failed: he united 18 Eurozone Finance minister against the then Greek government and alienated in no time politicians who sympathised at the beginning with the government he was a part of.

YV is great - what he didn’t explain was how “money printing” by definition devalues a currency and creates inflation.
Conservatives emphasize that government handouts create inflation (furlough in the UK and Trump’s cheques), it does, but the money printing for the banks far exceeds any such handouts and is the key driver of inflation of assets.

    • @filmjazz

The last step in the lifecycle of money is taxation. Money printing must be offset by "burning" the money at the end of its journey from the Fed, the central banks, commercial banks, smaller banks, employer, wage earners, consumer goods producers, service providers, etc. If the money is not intelligently taxed back out of the system you will see inflation everywhere there is "too much money chasing too few goods."
New housing and rent prices are high because hedge funds and wealthy individuals literally have too much money to spend on cash purchases, and workers are left with record debt, 30 year high interest rates, and historically depressed wages.
Fiat currency has led to massive corruption where, as you said, the gains are privatized, the losses are socialized, and the tax system is rigged against the majority for the benefit of the few. It's unsustainable.

Mr. Varoufakis sticks to a thinking process most of us continue to have; which is thinking in nation states or countries.
In reality the financial system and economies are being controlled and destructed by private (central) banks, at least since WW1, being solidified at the end of WW2 through Breton Woods and the establishment of its controlling mechanism IMF, Worldbank, but also the Federal Reserve. The resulting debt-based banking system, being the biggest crime of the century, has enslaved all IMF-member states, thus nearly the planet as a whole. If anyone refused to comply, they just start to sanction them, inflict a regime change or induce a war.
So, it doesn't make sense to point fingers at German or English banks, because they're owned by the same shareholders. There are 3 investment conglomerates controlling at least 2 times the global GDP. This is what we're dealing with, concentration and centralization of wealth, power and control.
However, their system of enslavement came to an end in 2008 and saw its final collapse in September 2019 (repo-crash). That's why they came up with crisis after crisis, to be able to direct taxpayers' dollars to their pockets. "Climate" is the same story, funneling public money to their multi-nationals - socializing debt and capitalizing profits. The digitalization or digital concentration camps as I tend to call them, including digital IDs, QR-codes and CBDCs is their final goal to remain in power.
The EU is a spin off of Wall Street and Washington and is doomed to fail, as long as they don't separate from the global banking mob. Russia, among others understood and took action.
The solution is to build up decentralized, local banking systems, controlled by the people, to be able to hold people accountable. And that's exactly what's already happening. Because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

As you wrote it...philosopher. Just theory and nothing more. Totally incompetent. We Greeks, we experienced the implementation of his economic policy in 2015. After six months the banks closed and Greece was one step away from being kicked out from the Eurozone and from the EU. 👎

Wow, what an interesting talk from start to end. Mr Varoufakis you are one of my favourite thinkers. Good health and safe travels to you sir. And thank you for resonating with me on Star Trek; I recall that episode well. Gene Roddenberry had a vision of a world that was more just. Maybe idealistic to border on utopianism, but the stories were not about the future in outer space; they were about the present, us, and the state we find ourselves now. Thank you again.

Varoufakis is one of these people that I agree in 90% of the stuff he says, my disagreements are not that strong in the rest 10%, he is a Marxist/socialist and I am a believer in free markets. Not sure how this happens. In any case, I always enjoy listening to him because he sees things from a different perspective than me, for just about everything - and that's refreshing.

I'm writing this around 10 am Monday 11/20/23. I don't know if Yanis Varoufakis reads these posts, but if he does I'd like him to address this matter: We all know that the very existence of finance -- lending money for interest -- requires ever expanding the money supply, therefore ever expanding the economy. But the WORLD cannot ex- pand, so this affair cannot go on w/out ending--obviously. Yet no economist has addressed this. Varoufakis is the smartest of the lot. Speak to this, please!

Excellent! The deceptively simple questions elicited fascinating answers - direct and beautifully illustrated. Funny too: “the European Union? I wish we had one…. How did the South Koreans manage to save their banks and get rid of their bankers? Those are powerful men! Answer from the president - ‘Easy. We called in the Marines!’” Noted!

Great podcast! Yanis is a gem. I would expand on the "Debt is a claim on future wealth " point by exploring what underpins all human wealth which is I suggest extraction of resources from the earth. Ultimately debt is a claim on future extraction. On a planet with finite resources, infinite debts can not be repaid by the earth system. When the earth system fails there will be no rolling it over. Any economic system which does not recognize its dependency on the eco-system that provides all the outputs and absorbs all it's waste is doomed to fail. Failure to live sustainably on your home planet is I suspect the true Great Filter.

cow on grass field creates a non zero sum game
you fertilise soil, you produce better milk and meat with time, then you can use fertile soil for farming if you must producing high quality feed for animals
the same as river that brings minerals with water and dirt
actual model is to eat up all grass not letting it regenerate and push roots deeper, modify cow genetically to feed it equally modified unnatural feed producing with a few minerals on completely sterile land, and push chemical crap from factories to the river murdering fishes and sending toxic crap to fields
human stated this madness with modification of plants that are inherently uneatable for humans
this revolution competed with next one of inventing herding
until today you can classify all human myths into three groups - original African stories including the lion man people from deep or born in a tree plus bad snake, next stories about flood and serpents, gods of water, and lastly myths of Eurasian steppe herders where cow in the main topic or stag eagle sometimes, each compounded on the earlier ones.
herders were winning when graineaters got sick and got decimated by plagues because of deficient diet
but we're losing when overcrowded cities organised and sent big dense armies often on ships
it's always city vs desert, shore vs interior, meat vs grain and both affected by climatic cycles

Didnt easter island population do the same , eat and use the whole island and resort to canibalism at the end since where is the food for the population now . Men cant help themselves and women are thier support team , kids growing up to young adults try new things but it wont matter in the long run. Same now , computers ( ai ) wont help -they just enhance what some already have until they might take over with programmed with the same "code" as those who created the catastrofic situation and i guess a lesser program will be deleted (us) . Thats male men for you- I dont see a functioning brain in most men.

It's concerning to see a growing sense of unease, of disenfranchisement, particularly amongst younger people developing across the world,
mostly in 'the West. There are obvious indicators but perhaps the core issue exists at an existential level. Perhaps Yanis recognises this.
