I bought a 2022 4 months ago. It's a great bike. I am 6'4' and pretty heavy. Its more than enough for a beginner or first bike purchase. I can keep up with traffic easily.
The bike has enough power for everything. Try dropping a gear before over-taking. The people who complain about it not having much passing power don't do that. I mean, what do you expect when you are trying to accelerate hard in your over-drive gear? That's only possible on super bikes because they make a ridiculous amount of power at the top end so you can kind of "cheat" shifting. But this is just a regular sports bike; you WILL have very noticeably less torque when accelerating outside of the bike's efficiency range.
yeah just got to upshift and get that passing power. the guys who test ride it and push it on lower gears just don’t understand how this machine works.
I rode a friend's 250 ninja for a month then bought my 2014 cbr500r w/ 1500 miles on it back in 2015. Its now 2024 and it has 79,000 miles on it (90-95% freeway miles) and still runs great.
Getting one in March!! Gotta wait for the MSF season to open back up, but I’m extremely excited for this! My first ever bike. American reviewers think that a 1000cc 200hp bike is just okayish for teenage beginners, and anything smaller than that is just a scale model toy for toddlers.
Yeah mate. I bought one after having bigger bikes including a ZZR1200. It does everything I want it to do. Cruises well on the highways. Cheap to run including registration and insurance. Still fun in the turns as well.
Here in Alberta, Canada the insurance rates for my ZX14 are funny as hell. Since no squids ride this bike and the insurance companies consider this bike more of a touring bike the rates are stupid low. Right now I am down to 500cdn a year. Of course we can't ride all year but hey pretty good anyways. My first bike was 1987 FZ600 which has pretty well the same power as the new 500's. Never ever had a problem with power and it was such a wonder ride.
@@LINKchris87 yeah I really liked it. Really versatile. Only reason I got rid of it was because I was on it when it was written off when I was t-boned.

Nice ride man. I like how calm and relax you are. I ride the same bike (2015) in Northern Arizona. If you come up around here, give it a try for Road 89A from Flagstaff to Sedona.
The CBR500R runs mid 13's in the 1/4 mile. That's faster than the average vehicle on the road. Unless you're driving on some preteen's fantasy highway filled with Lamborghini's, McLarens and highly modified GTR's you would have no problems passing anything in front of you.
how people say its not fit for highways is beyond me. I drove a cbr125r for 2 years, from when i was 16 till i was 18, and i never had a problem driving on the highway, often for 1 hr+. Albeit im in norway, still, i would get it up to 55-70 mph with no issue. Being able to hit 100 mph is more than plenty.
Whenever someone says a 500 is too small for the highway just remember that Honda made a 500cc fully dressed touring bike in the early 80s called the GL500 Silverwing Interstate. I had one.

Same power as my first bike a 1987 Yamaha FZ600. Still have very fond memories of that bike and would love to find one again to do a rebuild. Love my current ZX14 as she does long distance (up to 6 hours) in comfort.
More than enough power for American roads! I had one and it was nice to ride on German roads... I sold it though because they updated the dash on the newer one so I just got the 650r...lol.
This is going to be my very first bike and I’m mainly getting it as a cruise/commute/getting out of trouble I’ve driven my dads 750cc Harley Davidson before at 14 and I remember it being super easy to handle and I see you’re in Phoenix! I’m currently in the application process at Nash Powersports
People must be joking when they say the 500R doesn't handle highways. My 500R killed it on highways, plenty of passing power, hell even with an extra passenger it has 0 problem going as fast as I need. I guess if me and my passenger were very heavy set perhaps not the case (no offense to anyone, just not sure what else could make people say that)? But I digress, even my 300R has no problem on the highway, albeit with a bit more buzzing (solved with earplugs). Highly, highly recommend the 500R to everyone from beginners and experienced riders alike, it's got plenty of low and high end power without being overkill so you can easily maneuver in traffic and on highways as needed, all while remaining very affordable on market price and insurance premiums, not requiring a painful riding position, and getting great gas mileage. Only downside is it's so beautiful and common that your theft risk is higher - my lovely 500R just got stolen from me yesterday as a result. But I guess that's every bike, really...
I'm not a new rider, I did sell mine though years ago. I now have to commute 100 miles round trip for work 5 days a week. The 600rr gets 45 ish mpg... this gets 75 ish mpg.... im thinking apx 1 gallon of gas a day at 6 bucks is pretty damn good reason for this bike
I'm getting a CBR this weekend as my first bike. I took the MSF course and passed so now I got my M1 license. So, it's about an hour and 30 minutes to get my bike and I'm nervous to ride it back honestly lol
Any peasant who says this bike hasn't got enough grunt for a learner is an absolute ape. I picked one up as my first bike ever and am loving it. I've been on a 5hr ride with it, it's manageable, fun in corners, has enough power to overtake, can ride on the highway and also overtake on the highway (just drop a gear) and is pretty much just a good all-rounder for a first bike. I tested ninja 300's a 400 and an mt-07. I picked the cbr500r for a reason and that's because it's probably the absolute best stepping stone to a higher capacity sportsbike. I want a gsx r750 as my next bike which is far more intense than the 500 but I feel like the cbr500r is like training wheels for a more aggressive sportsbike. The mt-07 had a shit load more grunt but it was so upright it didn't feel like what I wanted. The Ninja 400 was a bit quicker than the cbr500 but it's a hell of a lot lighter too which was a no go because I needed to be able to handle something a little heavier if I was moving to something more powerful. At the end of the day, it's a Honda and it's reliable, comfy, easy to maintain, fun to ride and easy to learn on, what more could you want?
I learned how to ride a bike at age 33. Bought a CBR500R, great learner. Plenty of low end torque, not too heavy. Finally after 5 years I sold it and switched to a Kawasaki Z900. Glad I did learn on a smaller bike.
Started on the 12 CBR250R, would love to upgrade to this. Hooned the guts out of my 250, I want just a bit more power and this seems perfect. I don't want 600r potential for trouble.
Had a CBR600 as my last bike. Looking to get back into riding so I'm looking at this or a Yamaha R3. I love Supersports but they're so easy to get into trouble on. Plus I had on more fun on my old Ninja 250 and 650 back in 08 and 09. I'm seriously thinking this bike though for sure.
I would pick the 500r over an r3 any day. Unless you have a tight budget. Especially with some riding experience I think you’d love the 500r. Plenty of power to have some fun but very very manageable in all areas.
@@AndrewHartsockexcuse me, btw Honda is better than Yamaha right bro? Vietnamese’s opinion say :Honda u raraly meet trouble like yamaha, Honda is good for long use,…blabla Do u agree with us?
500 cbr is a perfect beginner bike for semi experienced rider. However It might be a little heavy for a newbee who's absolutely never been on a bike before. Awesome bike with adequate power.
Def a great starter bike, and it's what I started with. Didn't find it too heavy, but weight is this bikes weakness - too heavy for that 471cc PT. My biggest issue was that I would literally be through all the gears by 70km/hr and once at highway speed, there wasn't a much juice left. I also found it really uncomfortable after about 45 minutes. Good starter bike but very limited at the top end.
Honestly, I was quite comfortable on my CBR 300 on the highway too. Yes, you are about 90% of throttle going 80mph, but it's not like it couldn't do it.
This bike really reminds me of my first one years back, a 2007 Suzuki GS500F, except that one was carbed and this is a Honda, but seems like it's very similar in philosophy of use.
I used to ride a 2012 cbr250r and i went on the highway on it all the time...it did well over highway speeds...so im guessing the 500r would have NO issues AT ALL on the highway
The un-educated will think it is a 600 but I think the main selling point apart from mini-'Blade looks is it's 80mpg, 300mile range. When I travel long distances I don't sit at Banzai speeds all the time, 85 is a comfortable cruising speed and a CBR500R can do it all day long.
Not a bad bike to begin riding. I have 6 months riding and new I feel like having a 600 or 650. Not the fastest but not the slowest. Would recommend for starters
I really am looking at this bike, i have a 650 Vulcan but looking to switch to a sport bike my only concern is i feel like compared to the 650 the 500 will feel slower I have to try one out!
Got a 2021 only 3k miles way better price than brand new, but it's my first bike upgraded from scooters and it has plenty of power and perfect for new rider's.
Is it as fast as 1000cc no, is it fast enough yes. I drove from corpus Christi Texas to Daytona Beach Florida on my 2021 cbr 500r. Absolutely no problems
It's not middle weight bike, it's top end beginner bike for sure but has nothing compared to mid weight bikes. Good first bike for sure, nothing like good second. I think if u want more power and you can pull your bike up to 100%, your next bike can easily have 50% more hp, and i mean to start from 650. 650 is the way to start if you ridden even with 125cc before! If never ride any 2wheel thing, i think that's the point to buy something like 300-500cc under 50hp bike.
The whole point of that bike is the MPG. Great commuter. Looks like a 600cc but a 600cc supersport it is not. A 600cc supersport has better passing power but the Honda looks like it can do it, just not as fast. No biggie.
I’m 6,1 240 I started cramping a bit in legs but could just be me, I was a little sore from hiking, do you know if a cbr 600rr would have more leg room?
People forget there was something like a goldwing back in the day with a 500cc engine and it was apparently great for touring America. Why can't this bike be a good long distance tourer.
i want this bike so bad but this a1 a2 system takes too long. i had my 125 for like 3-4 months and i already bored on it. i want this cbr sooo bad. btw good content
When someone makes a video and says the 250 is too small for the hwy, move to the next video I had a 110cc bike at went 70 mph which is MORE than enough for hwy speed.
When your cruising in the 70 to 90mph speed range, what's the tank range and fuel consumption like in real world highway conditions ? Does it really get 80mpg and 300 miles from a tank ?
I average 60-65mpg and I am not nice to my cbr500. The best I got babying the crap out of it was 72mpg. The worst I've got is Going 100-110 constantly for about 20 miles and I averaged 48 mpg. These are real world numbers on my 2022 from a rider who is 6-1 and 250lbs with all my gear on.
When they say slow it’s taking into comparison metrics to other bikes in its class and price range, Honda makes quality but bad design choices or shoehorned the engine into a segment and this is what you get, for new riders it’s the bees knees but with time and other experiences with others in its class and a more clear picture of what they want from a bike they will know twins vibe too much at highway speeds, why do you see all touring class bikes have inline motor setups, after more than half an hour your hands go numb from singles and twins, this bike is overpriced for what it delivers compared to the competition, over weight and poor handling compared to the others, the newer models 2022 have upgraded brakes and suspension but then again it’s even more expensive, your into super bike and mt07 class you might as well go there
Please help.... I've been planning on getting this bike. But I've only rode semi-automatic dirt bikes and I'm kinda scared to be honest 😭 best advice???
Best advice: if you're too scared don't ride on the street. Accept that riding a motorcycle comes with added risk. Second: learn proper ways to mitigate the risk. Training, practicing, lessons, coaches, etc...
i dont understand, why do you have to cover your kph monitor or a dushboard, pannel board by the time you squeez a little bit harder of your accelerator.
you genuinely do not need more than 50hp... people who like the 100hp bikes are people who are bored... if you enjoy riding, 500's/400's are enough and if you want to do interstate cruising or carrying a pillion across long distances a 650 is not the worst thing since they tend to have higher weight capacity, the 500's top out around 400lbs and the 650s tend to go nearly 500lbs.
@@steamtrash7060 It’s a Honda bro. Kawasaki and Honda engines are invincible you could grab a Ninja 250 and scream it at 12k revs on the highway all day.

Excellent review very helpful 👍
Exactly what i was looking for! Thank you!!
If your on 2 wheels and having fun it has plenty of power.
Perfect way to put it man!
I have a 2015 500r from new. 95,000 km on it. Great bike. I prefer it to my street triple 675r.
Honestly, I was quite comfortable on my CBR 300 on the highway too. Yes, you are about 90% of throttle going 80mph, but it's not like it couldn't do it.
I did a 2000km trip on a Yamaha R3. I loved it for what it could do and the fuel savings were amazing.
My first bike. Pretty happy with it.
Same!
Yeah agreed. Its a good middle ground bike for people learning to ride or just aren't interested in excessive power haha
I really am looking at this bike, i have a 650 Vulcan but looking to switch to a sport bike my only concern is i feel like compared to the 650 the 500 will feel slower I have to try one out!
i used to take my R3 on the highway. Only issue with small displacement is the vibration. Otherwise its all good
Got a 2021 only 3k miles way better price than brand new, but it's my first bike upgraded from scooters and it has plenty of power and perfect for new rider's.
Enjoy it and ride safe 👍🏼🔥
Just got one … love it
Ride safe!
I just got a 2015 and I love how tame it is.
....40y/o seems to be all I need.
For the right rider...it's the perfect bike. Loved the time I had with mine!
I ride on my 125 in highways and it’s doing great I can even overtake a lot of cars
I had a 13 CBX I rode literally coast to coast numerous times. I got a CBF model recently to change it up and I expect it to do similar work.
I love my 2021 ...great for carving canyons...
Yes I have 1 and it does fine on highway and the confort beats the 600rr any day!!
All fair points. I moved on to a Z900 after this and have been nothing but pleased!
As I suspected more than enough for the highway picking one up in the morning 👍
Congrats! You'll have fun with it.
@@AndrewHartsock mate I'm loving it 👍
The whole point of that bike is the MPG. Great commuter. Looks like a 600cc but a 600cc supersport it is not. A 600cc supersport has better passing power but the Honda looks like it can do it, just not as fast. No biggie.
It’s fast enough for some and it had its purpose for me but I’ve moved on! The gas mileage was super crazy that’s for sure
@@AndrewHartsock With gas prices being so crazy every sportbike rider should consider having one of these in the garage just for commuting.
I've got an old suzuki 2009 gs500f and it works just fine on the highway. People under estimate the 500cc bikes. (I know this is an older video).
I think there's just a stereotype out there that if you don't have a bike that can do 180 mph than it's not fast enough... haha
You can ride on the Freeway on most 300s. Comfortably on a 500.
Getting mine soon, cbr500r
I’m 6,1 240 I started cramping a bit in legs but could just be me, I was a little sore from hiking, do you know if a cbr 600rr would have more leg room?
I have a 500 cbr its great
People forget there was something like a goldwing back in the day with a 500cc engine and it was apparently great for touring America. Why can't this bike be a good long distance tourer.
The fact that americans dont have to start on a 125 means there idea of power is deluded. 500 is big enough for anyone. Thanks for the vid!
what phone mount is that ? im picking up a cbr500 next friday. Can you drop a link ?
It's made by QuadLock. Mine is the fork stem mount and make sure to add the vibration dampener so your phones doesn't break
You’re a natural
At least one of us think so 🤣
@@AndrewHartsock Lol 🤣😂
nice i've been eyeing this bike. and hoping i can get one
Do it 💯💯
i want this bike so bad but this a1 a2 system takes too long. i had my 125 for like 3-4 months and i already bored on it. i want this cbr sooo bad. btw good content
1:50 ay, isn’t that an newer orange Corvette..? o:
When someone makes a video and says the 250 is too small for the hwy, move to the next video
I had a 110cc bike at went 70 mph which is MORE than enough for hwy speed.
Great bike the stock suspension is not all that good with a good set up it would be quite capable in the hills
I see you are in the desert. I’m in Phoenix . What tires do you recommend…
Hey just wanted to ask what year yours is?
Mine's a '13 and I ride her on track 😁
One of my goals is to do a track day soon
@@AndrewHartsock When you do, post a video or revisit this thread and let me know how it goes!!
When your cruising in the 70 to 90mph speed range, what's the tank range and fuel consumption like in real world highway conditions ? Does it really get 80mpg and 300 miles from a tank ?
Not quite that great of numbers but I will say I don't think you''ll be disappointed!
I average 60-65mpg and I am not nice to my cbr500. The best I got babying the crap out of it was 72mpg. The worst I've got is
Going 100-110 constantly for about 20 miles and I averaged 48 mpg. These are real world numbers on my 2022 from a rider who is 6-1 and 250lbs with all my gear on.
u can tune cbr500r to 60-70 hp
This bike will cruise at 75 mph all day long, just how much faster do you need to go on a highway?
I do 115 on mine every time I hit the highway
@@Youdidgoodslick I thought there top speed is 112 mph
with my cbr500r 2021 189km/hrs
I love my2014
I have same bike good dependably over I'll hit 40000 spring time comes tires brakes chain spokets on thing up keep of course
Nice bike 👍
Do these come with matching power rangers costume?
Ride safe man
Pfft I take my cb300r on the highway and it manages to get by not the best tho :(
300 would be kinda rough…500 is significantly heavier which I think makes a huge difference!
you genuinely do not need more than 50hp... people who like the 100hp bikes are people who are bored... if you enjoy riding, 500's/400's are enough and if you want to do interstate cruising or carrying a pillion across long distances a 650 is not the worst thing since they tend to have higher weight capacity, the 500's top out around 400lbs and the 650s tend to go nearly 500lbs.
Did you clip on for bike ?
If u travel a long ways going 80 will you have any engine issues later on
If you take care of your bike you won't have any issues. Change engine oil regularly, check fluids and tire pressure and you'll be fine.
@@AndrewHartsock ok thanks I’m 16 and I getting one I’m just worried about insurance on the bike I heard it’s not too bad but idk
@@steamtrash7060 It’s a Honda bro. Kawasaki and Honda engines are invincible you could grab a Ninja 250 and scream it at 12k revs on the highway all day.
how bout the suspension? i heard someone say it is too soft
If you're under 150 lbs the suspension is fine, even with preload set on the soft side.
It’s getting updated for 2022 and better brakes
Can u link your phone holder?
Whats the top speed?
Why did you blur it out lol
what phone mount is that
what clip ons are those !?
Can this kind of bike be ridden in terrain?
Bruh you already know about the traffic in Phoenix
It be wild out here 😂
Do you have your high beam on????
Yes, I always ride with the high beam on during the day.
Can you test top speed with gps
GOOD
Why you blok the meter😑
Me with a 250cc on the highway👀
Its more than enough in the uk
