    I know these cars use petrol but this event does help give students some engineering challenges that they would otherwise not get.

    Its an attempt by shell to show how much you can still get out of fuel to try and drag it out for years to come, but in completely impracticable vehicles.

      thedementation666 This is greenwashing when petrol vehicles are used, but a lot of the technology can be transferred to an electric car. It also creates an interest in engineering which is also good.

      Maybe, but I liked the electric car with solar panels and the tiny battery. Solar panels and batteries in a "normal" EV is coming. Take a look at the upcoming Sono Sion. It's a 4 seater with loots of trunk space (and a tow-hook) with solar panels all around. On a sunny summers day you can get almost 40km of range from the solar panels. So if you only drive it 3-4 times a week for average trips you don't need to charge it.

      That was in the solar challenge not in the shell eco marathon. I was involved in that one. We used a 2000 watt e-motor and had 2 entries in 2 different years.

      Shell, and Mobil, and Exxon, and Chevron, and all the rest of the petroleum companies have made an effort to re-brand themselves as _'energy'_ companies for the past four decades. Mostly for the sake of the unwashed barefoot long haired hippie treehuggers, but more recently for the sake of making money on the transition.

    Lovely episode
    Of course, as other people point out in the comments, Shell just tried to show off that petrol is still "cool" and "efficient" or whatever
    But who cares, it's still an interesting Fully Charged episode, so let's keep an open mind and listen to arguments, even if they're from petrol companies

    • @p_mouse8676

      Well, don't forget that companies like Shell invested heavily in oil, so no they're not just gonna give up the fight and at least look into how far they can stretch it.
      Apart from the fact/discussion if it's better or worse or not.

    Yes yes yes, we all want amazing MPG numbers... the issue is that it is unattainable unless people are willing to accept their new average high way speed drop to 20 miles per hour.
    Air drag can't be negotiated away as long as you need to fit people, luggage and passenger safety.

    So many negative comments! If it was sponsored by the government I'm guessing all the pet grievances would come out, likewise if say Virgin sponsored it. To me, petrol was a stepping stone to something better and big oil will transition to big energy. So what. As a recent engineering graduate these type of projects were actually the most educational & fun thing in my 4 years of study! Maybe I'm biased bc my team won the solar car race but please let's move toward a better future together, positively. Peace.

I feel that for a lot of people the ICE will continue to live on. I think that most cars will be set up similarly to the BMW i3. (Cars with range extenders)

      Meh. This has been done for over forty years. Not new at all, though it is a good engineering exercise for students. Luckily, they were wrong. Yay!

    In all the years Shell have been doing this the tech these budding engineers have been developing hasn't made it into family cars. That's because Shell sell petrol and if you waste it you have to buy more. There is no real business incentive to save fuel, infact quite the opposite. I was glad to see battery cars involved and It would be interesting to know which does more miles for a given amount of stored energy, be that in petrol or a battery, I suspect the latter.

    • @redxsage
      @redxsage 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, the technology makes it into cars, but it makes little difference. It takes a lot more energy to move a 5,000 pound vehicle than it does a sub-500 pound car, or under 50 pound vehicle, as some of these are... Honda was well on their way to achieving 60+ MPG vehicles when safety regulations were changed to effectively require that no street legal midsize vehicle could be built at less than 3,200 pounds. It has been a long time since a BMW 3-Series weighed less than 2,400 pounds, or a Honda CR-X was around 1,700 pounds. Those times will not be coming again, even with more and more aluminum and composite materials used in their production.

    Great video! You should try to cover some Formula Student competition or just visit a team. Formula student is also a student competition where teams from universities all over the world compete with their own designed and built racecar. The Formula Student competition is split into three vehicle categories: Electric, Combustion and Driverless (autonomous). With Electric and Driverless most suitable for you and this channel. There aren't many UK teams going with electric. But there are a lot of teams in the rest of Europe building electric cars, mostly German and Scandinavian teams. The next formula student competition is in Germany (at the Hockenheim-ring) in the middle of august. You should look into it!

    As much as I admire the engineering that goes into making a petrol fueled car go that far on the refined, milleniums aged bottled sunshine juice they put into it, had they given you some pedals and let you power it with whatever energy your breakfast produced, it would have gone as far and not had the occasional farty sound behind you in the process. That is supposing you didn't breakfast on burritos:)

    I imagine that in the year 2100 school kids will do things like this for play projects. Ubiquitous and advanced additive manufacturing with advanced materials and recycling capabilities (the new play clay really). AI Assisted Design (the new CAD/crayons). The teacher will hold up a bottle fluid and tell the class: "Class! This is Petrol. People used Petrol up until the middle of the last century to make their cars go. Today we will see how far we can make a small car go with a liter of this Petrol. Please form groups of 5. Get your tablets hooked up to the fabricator. You have 3 hours. All testing will be done by our class robots in the isolation room. The combustion of Petrol is known to emit various heavy metals and Nitrous compounds that can have negative effects on human health."

      Just need them to be a little cheaper (say $3k) with parking incentives, you could save that much in a year from driving a normal car in a city. Hell, just parking near my work would cost me $3.5k, not including fuel and maintenance.

    Shell are starting to shift to electric charging points, out of necessity in order to make money not because of any concern for the climate. I'd be amazed if their renewable investments are even 50% of what they are still investing in oil extraction. Promoting Shell's image as a 'green' oil company ignores the horrific environmental damage done in countries like Nigeria and those who were killed trying to stop Shell polluting the environment like Ken Saro-Wiwa en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Saro-Wiwa

      It's not a question of hating the oil company's or not.
      It'll just be market forces that drive the future requirements for their products.
      As the production of oil for fuel reduces the next question will be whether alternatives to the current plastics, possibly using materials such as resin and/or carbon become available. If oil is used only for production of plastics these will probably become more expensive due to the cost of extraction.

    Lots of comments all to eager to dismiss this entire thing, including the participation of students and their learning experiences, just so they can express their disapproval of Shell.
    It's a bloody student competition, we're the focus of it, whoever organizes it. Does it all magically become worthless for us just because you've got axes to grind for Shell?
    Fuck the cynicism.

    132.62mpg not bad. About 4 times better than a regular ice vehicle. Too bad it’s not reflected in the market where it really counts which means it counts 4 nothing. Ice cars maybe improved 10%mpg since the 80’s Pitiful

    *So Fuel cars are efficient. Then it's appropriate to buy another fossil SUV.* - _Halo effect_
    This is how human psychology simplifies. It doesn't see the difference between this car, made for minimum friction and maximum efficiency, and their SUV, designed for maximum drag and weight.

      The petrol cars in this race are "cheating", they run high compression and advanced timing, so they are emitting much more NOx that current road vehicles are allowed to. Typically they use a 6HP Honda engine with a custom head and a single injector after market kit for this engine. The key in getting insane mileage is pulse and glide, where you run the engine at full throttle for a few seconds and then coasting with the engine off, which works, Then they keep the speed at a max of 15 mph, which reduces wind resistance to a minimum. I've tried this in my 20 yeas old fiat and it works, however impractical: Average careful mixed driving gets me 49 US MPG (25kM/L) going at a constant speed of 35 MPH(50kMh) in 5'th at 1600 rpm I get 41 kM/L. However trying pulse and glide with killing the engine at 50kMh and coasting down to 30kMh before repeating, I get 78 kM/L (2 AM in the morning on deserted streets) , that is 183 US mpg (220 British MPG). Though not enough to win any competitions, it shows how specialized these cars are and the most important tricks they use are totally impractical, What this race contribute with, is in material science, manufacturing and aero dynamics, all important for the future of transportation, but they have not discovered anything magical to make the internal combustion engine much more efficient than it is.

    • @bene-dikt
      @bene-dikt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, even that. Makes sense as efficiency and NOx are typically contrary.
      Agree, the full throttle driving also makes sense due to the bad idle efficiency of 0 of a combustion engine. Working with a hybrid. But a non-fossil car is just better nowadays.
      Your last sentence sums it up nicely.

    • @Tore_Lund
      @Tore_Lund 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i cant handle all that flatter! Yes hybrids keep a smaller engine loaded harder at its most efficient point, otherwise it is shut down. But you have a penalty hauling batteries and an electric motor around, so hybrids are most efficient in city traffic, but they use more fuel on the highway when recharging batteries, so in standardized tests with mixed driving, they have the same fuel economy as economy diesels; 3L/100km or 78 mpg.

    These cars are interesting and all but other than the novelty if they aren't safe, have useful performance and carrying capacity, or legal for the street then they are for all intents toys. To wit there's a man in California who puts on a race called the "Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge" where motorcycles compete at freeway speeds (with police escorts) and realistic performance while requiring they meet street legal requirements, winds, traffic and carrying capacity. They have everything from electric to diesiel, petrol to special fuels, and even with all these real world requirements the mileage is truly amazing. One year a contestant got around 470 MPG. I'm not sure if he's still doing it but the website is and for details.

      For a product to enter into market all the way from its inception to design to manufacturing to testing to transportation to its launch fossil fuels were burned/utilized. Look at any man made object around you and ruminate about how was it made . At one point of time fossil fuel or a fossil fuel derived product will be burned or utilized.

      It is naive to think that fossil fuels will ever die .Even if all first world countries generate their electricity from non fossil fuel sources . You will never bully into submission china , russian federation , india etc to stop burning or utilizing fossil fuels.

    • @111danish111
      @111danish111 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would require a paradigm shift in manufacturing . You can try all you want fossil fuels will be utilized/burned directly or indirectly at some point . Large ships , heavy equipment and transport companies run on fuel oil and diesel . Roads are even made from petroleum . China and India has a combined population of 2.7 billion and counting. Their new found love for capitalism/free markets will require burning of fossil fuels for their growth . 82% of India's electricity comes from burning fossil fuels and for China its 62% for Coal alone. These two countries are projected to be the 2 largest economies in the world after 40 to 50 years from now ahead of USA. You will not be able to handle them at that point of time just like you cannot handle Russia currently . Coal and natural gas accounts for 63% of energy generation of the USA . It will take perhaps a century even for first world countries to get away from fossil fuels .I am digressing a little bit but you get the idea . You will not make fossil fuels disappear . Not for another 2 or 3 centuries . Naive dreams .

    I think this video is wrong really. Showing up to a hugely polluting oil companies PR stunt full of the same tech used in cars but at such obscenely small weights and powers that it will have no change in our transportation. I thought this show was about shining a light on new paths forward. (not that I think there's time left for that. We've ignored the issue too long and polluted too much to turn back)
