Ryan Smyth is an all time great for the Oilers, especially considering he wasn't a part of the dynasty, but the rebuild. He stayed in Edmonton when so many others left, and give it everything he had, on and off the ice, no matter what. His work ethic was infectious, and his attitude towards hockey and life alike was admirable. He was a true "heart and soul" guy, and I wish the Oilers organization would give him the respect that he has earned and honour him properly by retiring his jersey.
I remember coming home from elementary school to find out he was traded, which also happened to be the afternoon before my birthday, and I still don't think I've recovered! I was so upset about it that I didn't even go into class the next day...
Thank you Shannon, for making a video on Ryan.
Also- with the current Oilers, Zack Hyman gives me major Smitty vibes with his attitude towards life, on and off the rink. Especially when it comes to their absurd work ethics; neither of them have an ounce of quit in there.

Ryan Smith deserves to get his 94# retired by the Edmonton Oilers darn it!
The man served 15 of his 19 career seasons with them through better or worse and gave all he had.
Ryan Smyth is an all time great for the Oilers, especially considering he was not a part of the 80's dynasty, but the 90's-00's rebuild.

Growing up Ryan Smyth to me personally was everything a hockey player shall be. He always strived to be the best player he could be, Not caring about being the best. He also gained the respect of the fans from his younger years learning from players like Doug Weight & passing those lessons to the new players who joined the team. The day he got traded to the Islanders I was devastated.
I would've been in Grade 6 at the time. My friends & I were excited who the Oilers were going to get that deadline. None of my friends including myself ever thought Ryan Smyth was going to be traded. We all thought you had to be crazy or just plain stupid to think that was going to happen. Then it happened. Everyone who loved the Oilers & Ryan Smyth went silent.
After school I couldn't stop crying as my Mom was listening about the trade on the Oilers radio. February 27, 2007 was supposed to be a special night. That evening it was Mark Messier's retirement night & not surprising Kevin Lowe was nowhere to be seen. I called him a coward. Nobody knew how to react. How were we supposed to celebrate the achievements of one of the greatest Oilers players of all time when the face of the Oilers at the time was now gone?
I know hockey is a business but what Kevin Lowe did to the fans I think is in excusable. While it's not the sole reason, I think this was a big reason why the Oilers had such a negative perception across the league & why we didn't make the playoffs for over a decade. I even had friends from Calgary who are huge flames fans call my house & just tell me how shocked they were to see him leaving.
Every NHL fan base was shocked.

I remember hearing on CBC from a commentator whose name I can’t recall that Ryan Smyth had the worst shot of any player who ever scored 30 goals in the NHL, but he made up for it by being good or great in almost every other area. The guy had no quit and was loyal to the Oilers, even coming back after playing in Colorado and LA. He was a tremendous player and nobody could outwork him.

    • @GetDaved
      @GetDaved 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

A big part of that was the fact that he used an old school wooden stick. There was a practice where he and Yakupov swapped sticks and Smyth actually had pretty good power, but he didn't switch to a composite stick. For the style Smytty played there's a case to be made that having a heavy club that can smash through the lighter sticks everyone else was using was more valuable than getting an extra 15MPH on his wrist shot.

Ryan Smyth is still my favourite hockey player of all time. I remember my very first hockey game was the game immediately after that trade deadline when Kevin Lowe traded Smyth over a disagreement totalling $100,000 (Smyth was willing to take a huge pay cut and take $2.5M, but Lowe wanted him at $2.4M for some stupid reason). I did eventually get to see Smyth when he came back (Edmonton now paying him over $6M because of the deal he signed in Colorado), and I watched his entire last game when he wore the "C", tied the Oilers all-time powerplay goals record, and when the Sedin twins lead the Canucks back onto the ice to congratulate him on an incredible career. I agree, his number needs to be retired because he was always known as the guy that bled Copper and Blue when no one else would!

I live in the Vancouver area and am a Canucks fan. You know how you see a divisional rival team a lot and at first hate and then come to greatly respect an opposing team’s player? For me that was Jarome Iginla and Ryan Smyth. And to some degree I had more respect for Smyth because he probably wasn’t as naturally gifted as Iginla but I swear I never saw Smyth do anything but skate as hard as he could every shift, finish checks if he had a clean shot, and he would throw himself in front of Sami Salo who was winding up for a 100 mph slap shot. Huge respect for Ryan Smyth.

I’ve done some electrical work in Smyth’s Edmonton home a couple times. Pretty fun house. Has a faux dressing room in it with the logos of the 4 teams he played for etched on the doors. He’s got a legit hockey rink in the yard with sponsored boards all around. There’s a room in the basement that looks like a small squash court that would be a hand hockey dream. Never met Ryan myself as I don’t think he spends much time in Edmonton anymore but I’ve only heard positive things and I believe he is a Christian. Noticed verses painted on the walls throughout the house.

    1. The trade to Islanders really hurt the city.
    2. His big skates always reminded me of Gretzky. Similar skater too.
    3. When he got to Islanders. The islanders won the last 4 games while Toronto won 2 of 4 for the Islanders to make it by 1 point.
    5. The trade press conference was sad. Years later we find out it was over a measly 100k?? Lowe and Mactavish killed the Oilers for many years.
    6. He would ha e had 400 goals if there was no lockout.
    7. His last game.

I remember seeing a clip of Ryan Smyth warming up before a game. Some is shooting pucks at the net and he is just deflecting them into the net. It was crazy! And I remember someone saying that he did not have a good shot. Was this true?

Fraser/Smyth trade was quite a controversy at the time. Dean Lombardi has some "choice words" about Steve Tambellini's shady practices when the Kings later found out that Fraser was injured.

Honestly, I think Smytty being traded, is whàt led/contributed the decade of darkness that followed. Also it's important to note, Smyth wanted to be traded to Edmonton from LA. My understanding is he wanted to retire an Oiler.

Yeah, no, they should have lost in Five Games, but, Fernando Pisani didn't even have the decency to let the Hurricanes finish their Power Play, OTOH, the kids of Edmonton can thank him for missing Dora The Explorer, Sweet, And, Sour, Grapes.

  • @mcdangles971

Sadly the Oilers won't retire Smytty's jersey, they have an unwritten rule that one must win a cup before their number can be retired. I can understand why they won't, but if there's anyone in the history of the Oilers that wasn't around during the 80s dynasty who otherwise deserves it it is Ryan Smyth. Miss that beautiful man and his beautiful mullet. Once an Oiler, always an Oiler.

I hear everything you're saying, but, by that same token, there are many people that think, Randy Gregg, and, Charlie Huddy, should, also, not, only have their numbers retired, but, be elected to the HOF, fortunately, the Oilers are, crazy, not, stupid.

I'm sorry I didn't recognize you at the Wolf Willow Husky gas island the day before game 7 ('06) Mr. Smith.
He needed $20 in the tank to catch his flight. It was 6am and a superstar was the last person I expected to roll up to my gas bar in some mid-sized grey pickup. Popped his head out when I asked him if he watched the game and said "I played it".
I froze with still no idea who the F I was looking at. Ryan if you read this, I wanna know; did you shave before the game? Cause I recall you had a massive scruff that morning and during the game it was gone; breaking an NHL tradition.
