I have Tom’s autograph! His dad went to my dad (a retired neurologist) for treatment and a diagnosis. Sadly, it wasn’t a favorable diagnosis, but Tom was touched enough to give me an autograph as thanks.
My dad also saw John MacMullin as a patient. Lou was his chauffeur.

Part of why the Sabres gave up on him was that he actually had the reputation as a playoff choker earlier in his career (and somewhat rightfully so) until reversing that with Pittsburgh in the early 90's.

Another Barrasso-Hasek connection was game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 92. Eddie Belfour was pulled early by Mike Keenan and Hasek was put into the game and he played pretty well for the rest of it. Future vs. past Buffalo goalies. I believe Buffalo took Barrasso with a draft pick they got from the LA Kings in the Rick Martin trade, and Martin ended up playing about 5 games for the Kings before he had to retire. A couple of years before that, the Kings traded the pick to Boston that became Ray Bourque. Which is why it took them almost 50 years to win their first cup.

Right out of high school..that is insane! One thing about Barrasso too..he was a really good puck handler. I was so infatuated with the goaltending position when i was kid and was a huge Barrasso fan. living here in Pittsburgh and watching them all of the time i wasn’t aware until some years later of how much of a jerk he was especially with media people. But it did kind of make sense to me because he always looked like he was ready to become unhinged. He’d swing his stick at players legs, hit them with the blocker i absolutely loved it.

Barrasso's latter 90s individual numbers are quite similar with Grant Fuhr. Both goalies were winning lots of games during the 80s with 'way below' .900 save percentages but actually bumped up those saving stats during their latter years in the 90s. I remember Fuhr also having some quite monster save percentages with the Blues during the latter 90s.
Those are the two first names that bump up into my mind when thinking about names who could 'elevate' their stats noticeably during their latter years when the game changed.

  • @jahmanoog461

For teams with fan bases that have never won a Cup, we PEN fans will tell you that you will always give props to the goalie that wins your team their first Cup. We know Barasso may have been a pr#*k/ at times, and we don't care. THG say it right, good not great; but there were clutch saves in that run. I think he shows how positioning, discipline and (yes, must say it) size are for GT, a lot of pucks hit him. Every NHL caliber GT has learned a complex craft. His name on the Cup. He believe in that team, confident Mario and gang would get some goals. A little fire in the belly is a good thing. Thanks Tom Barasso.

I remember when he was traded from Buffalo.. Barrasso already was seen as a Spoiled Brat/Jerk.. and we had Darren Puppa who looked like the real deal along with Jacques Cloutier as well. only a few seasons later Puppa would be moved to Toronto because they also had HOF'ers Grant Fuhr and Dominik Hasek... Buffalo may have moved him.. be we were fine.. Buffalo back then was really good at getting top end goalies in the draft.. Sadly, only since the trade of Ryan miller is when they have not done so well..
