    I have come to love watching your videos. I just found you folks about 2 weeks ago, and I have watched so many of your videos in that time. I had to laugh yesterday when I was making scones, as I was dumping them out on the counter to work them together, I heard Tom saying. “Scrape it all out, you don’t want to waste any of that”. Lol I smile every time he says that”.I’ve always been a good scraper, but he has made me a better one.

    I watched this video earlier. I can't remember if I commented or not. But this does look delicious. I will try this one day soon. That is a neat story about your dad.     I love watching you cook because you don't waste anything. We were raised poor so we were taught not to waste anything and I love that about you how you make sure everything is used. You also do exactly like I do when you open a bottle of something and pour you close it before going to the next thing and you use a spatula and don't waste. I love that that's why I will continue watching you because you relieve a lot of my stress where the other cooks that I watch cause me stress because they don't get everything out of the bowl. LOL

    Despite not being picky, I only tried sweet potatoes a few years ago while working at a restaurant in college. It’s so delicious

      I@patrickschardt7724 From childhood I just thought sweet potato’s seemed disgusting. Then when I was in my thirties my brothers girlfriend brought this dish to a turkey dinner and I fell madly in love with it. But we don’t do canned.

    This looks really yummy! I’ll have to make it for Thanksgiving this year. When you take a bite of the finished product, you might want to have a more marked reaction like Becky from Acre Homestead or Rachel from Rachel Cooks With Love. The viewers go crazy over it, lol!     We had a lot of Youngs to feed- we put ours-in the fridge and the freezer. To cool the freezer the food. Down faster.

    This way is good, but my Mom would add canned sweet potatoes, undrained, butter, brown sugar, and bake for a while. Then when hot, she added mini marshmallows and baked it😅 until marshmallows are melted and toasted. I like the bigger pieces of potatoes better than the whipped. Love your videos. Would you have any recipes for just 1-2 people? I lost my husband a few years ago and it’s hard for me to cut my recipes to smaller portions? Thank yu

      We’ve made it with marshmallows before and we agree that it’s very good. But we enjoy the crunchiness of the pecans and the potatoes together this way. Sweet potatoes are always a treat any way they’re prepared we think!
      Tom believes in “cook once eat twice”. We are fans of leftovers! But if you ever need help cutting a recipe, we’ll be happy to help you.

      Once you try this recipe nothing else will do. It’s the best but I prefer with fresh cooked sweet potatoes. And with spices.

    I love sweet taters too, any way I can get em. So cheers to your dad. My dad been gone since 1989 & I will always miss him. For my topping, I melt butter, add dk brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped pecans, & grape nuts cereal. It sounds odd, but it is so good. I'm not a huge fan of just eating the cereal, but it's so good as a topping.

    Thank you Tom and Melissa. This will be on our Thanksgiving table this year. I will have to double it and only put pecans on half. Some of the family members are crazy because they don't like nuts. 😊 This is a great alternative to the marshmallow candied yams because our daughter is a vegetarian and since marshmallows have gelatin (which is a beef product) we are always trying new recipes. Marshmallow creme and no gelatin marshmallows are an option but don't work as well baked on yams. This recipe will be a definite winner.

    I'm from Manchester, Ky and have been following you and your beautiful wife for several weeks! Love your show and I thought I saw this recipe a few weeks ago. So today I picked up the Pecans to make it with the Sweet Potatoes I have in my refrigerator. I will be putting it all together tomorrow morning!     I have a question.
    I too like to always use butter, but l notice that you use imitation vanilla. That is why it requires more.
    Real pure vanilla really makes a big difference... especially if you are able to get Mexican vanilla.

    My recipe is almost the same as yours except I add a bit of cinnamon to the sweet potatoes. It really is like dessert. 😊
    But I have a question. This is always one of the most popular dishes on the day it's made but after it's been refrigerated, the topping loses that crispiness. How do you reheat yours so that it's still good as leftovers?
    You're right, it's so delicious that I can eat it cold but my family wants it heated & so far, anything I've tried just doesn't come out as good.

    I’m glad you scrap everything out. I do the same and when I see others making a recipe and just pour the contents in from another container and leave a good amount behind it makes me cringe lol. I just have some kind of feelings about that lol.😊

    Ok, The basic recipe is good. Next time, try adding some apple or pumpkin pie spices to it along with some orange juice concentrate or orange zest and maple syrup. My Mother always brought fresh sweet potatoes and boiled them in their skin till they were tender. Peel the potatoes after they cool some and add the butter and brown sugar to the potatoes while they are hot. Add Carnation evaporated milk also for creamy potatoes. Top the potatoes with your topping and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes. Renove the potatoes from the oven and top with miniature marshmallow. Place the casserole under the broiler (500 degrees) until the marshmallows are toasted. Don't leave the marshmallows unattended as they will burn easily. Hope you enjoy this alternative recipe. Oh, a sweet potato casserole will taste exactly like the batter so taste it before you bake it to make sure it is just right (Goldilocks). There was a company who produced candid sweet potatoes in a can but they since stopped manufacturing them. I wish the would bring them back. This is a good recipe for Sweet Potato Pie also.

    For one person, instead of a casserole, bake one sweet potato until done. About an hour at 350°. Split top and put in a dollop of butter and mix it into potato. I eat it with only butter, but if you want all those sweet calories, add brown sugar, cinnamon and as many miniature marshmallows as you can stuff in. You can return to oven for an additional ten minutes to melt marshmallows if desired. By the way, sweet potato skins are just as good to eat as regular baked potato skins!!!

    MIL made candied sweet potatoes, I can make them thick with the candy mixture but when I reheat them it turns back to liquid. I would like to see if Tom wants to show me how to make it thanks love you two. Made the peach cobbler to was a hit.

    I've been making this delicious casserole on Thanksgiving for 50 years. Our family recipe includes cinnamon, nutmeg orange zest and a bit of Grand Mariner. Someone in the comments mentioned apples. That sounds like something worth trying. Maybe grate in some Granny Smith apple for a bit of tartness to cut the sweetness. I love your channel. Your recipes always remind me of childhood...and that is priceless.❤

    New to your channel I subscribed last month. I made your family sweet potato casserole ( cut sugars by half bc I used small marshmallow). Thank you so much. My question is can I freeze my casserole? If so how do I wrap it. So many people say you can freeze anything, however each time I have froze a cake for 2-3 weeks it always seems dry afterwards. Can you do a video on freeing cakes, pies and casseroles? Thank you and your camera lady ( your sweet wife) for all the videos. I find myself loosing interest in a lot of cooking videos because they talk so dang fast, I have to rewind. 🧡💚💜💙🩷💙🩵

    It's very little extra effort to buy raw sweet potatoes, bake them, peel them (which goes very fast once baked) and then cut them into the size of chunks you want. I think it is more nutritious this way, although I don't have proof of that. I like to avoid canned vegetables as much as possible, mostly because starting with fresh tastes better. You have more control over how they're cooked, how much salt, avoid any preservatives, and you don't pour any vitamin-rich water down the drain.

    I cook sweet potatoes. Mash them up add sugar butter carnation milk Then put topping on it like you. did!! very good I make it’s dry thanksgiving. my family loves it!!

    My mom would always use canned sweet potatoes, I can’t bring myself to do that. I use fresh cooked but I’m sure this delicious.

    I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Are you in the same situation. I could probably help you making meals for just too. But I find it easier to make it for 4 and freeze half for another time. It is cheaper to do it that way and most things are easy to freeze and reheat at another time. Tell me what you like to eat and I will help you. I am a chef by trade and I love to cook. I make everything from scratch and nothing takes me hours upon hours to make. Make all kinds of beautiful things that people think I worked all day on and it took me 20 minutes LOL. Let me know what you like and I will give you a couple of recipes to try and message me back

    Two things: I add whipping cream and cinnamon, ginger, and cloves to the sweet potato mixture.

    A pastry blender would be good for the topping to mix it well. Not an electric mixer! It is a utensil made for mixing pastry to cut in the Crisco or butter by hand!

    My aunt made something similar she put to a 2 1/2 pound can of yams and then she had put brown sugar butter and then she either put nuts but the biggest thing of all she put marshmallows on there man that was good but when it was a whole big family, she would get like six cans of yams

    Tommy just put this recipe in the oven… I threw in a pinch of cinnamon, hubby loves cinnamon and a bit of lemon zest on top…you’re right about the vanilla…holy cow, it’s gonna be tasty! Thanks Guys!! Happy Thanksgiving!❤

    My daddy loved sweet potatoes too. He liked them baked or fried in rounds. I make my sweet potato casserole like that also, I don't care for the marshmallow casserole.
