  • Homemade Mashed Potatoes and Milk Gravy
    21/2 pounds potatoes
    1 stick of butter
    milk
    salt and pepper
Peel potatoes and cut into approximately half inch cubes. Keep potatoes in water until your ready to boil them so they don’t turn brown. Boil fifteen to twenty minutes just until tender.
Drain well then blend in a mixing bowl with the butter, a few splashes of milk, and the salt and pepper to taste.
    Milk Gravy
    1 stick of butter
    1/2 cup all purpose flour
    4 cups milk
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
Melt butter in skillet. Whisk in flour cooking one to two minutes until it’s lightly browned. Add milk in one cup increments whisking well to remove all lumps. Stir in salt and pepper.
If the gravy becomes too thick, stir in another couple splashes of milk.
    To reheat gravy:
Place in a microwave safe bowl and reheat on medium for 1-2 minutes, stirring after each minute. Or heat on stove in a saucepan over medium heat stirring to keep from burning.

My mom always fried chicken and then used the grease with bits of the crispy fried part left with the grease to make her milk gravy. She always just served with boiled potatoes but that was my very favorite meal from childhood. The bits of chicken with the fried crust gravy was divine. I never fixed in adulthood because she never taught me to make gravy. Thank you for teaching me, now I can fix and eat one of my favorite meals.

My grandma told me a long time ago (when I was a young girl), how to determine the amount of potatoes to prepare. A good rule of thumb is: 1 potato per person , plus a potato for the pot. Of course, one must also consider the size of the potatoes being used…. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos, along with your memories of the persons who shared their recipes along the way. Thank you.

I was watching about my ‘leventy-seventh ‘Come Sit At My Table’ video and I thought, man, I never ever even think about the filming. It’s so excellent and precision, you just take it for granted! I’m not blowing smoke here. I always decide an actor can’t act when I’m sitting there thinking more about the actor than I am the movie. Same here. Good job, Melissa. Seriously!!

I love your videos because a lot of people just don't know how to make even the simplest of things. I do because I was raised in the country in the South. My favorite potatoes to mash are the russet or Idaho bakers. Red potatoes, to me, always turn out kind of a gummy consistency. Although I've used regular milk in them, I prefer to use evaporated milk and always real butter if I have it. Good gravy! Or, if you are in a pinch and need something more low fat, Morrison's white peppered gravy mix in the white bag at Walmart is very good. It is also a good thing to have in your pantry. On a side note, try making tomato gravy sometime and serve over biscuits. It's an old Southern recipe. God bless! Nancy Moore from Arkansas

I usually put at least 2-3 sticks I’d butter in my mashed potatoes. I use heavy cream instead of milk and they are incredible. Anytime I go anywhere where there’s food I’m asked to make mashed potatoes. They are so good. *pats self on back* 🤣🤣🤣
Dad always made bacon grease gravy. So so good. Anyone who doesn’t save and use bacon grease is off their rocker. I have a friend in England and he thinks I’m insane for using bacon grease. Until he used it to sauté some mushrooms in. He’s now a believer. Great video. I’d do love to sit at your table! 💜

If you don't have bacon grease, chicken fat or duck fat also work.
Like you said fat or grease or butter help create the flavor.
If allergic to milk or don't eat dairy or something, people could use that potato water to make the gravy and the potato starch will aid in the creaminess and thickening.
Ya made me hungry! I have a bushel of potatoes in the crawl soace, too!
Yes, creamy with a few small lumps!!

Brown or White. My Momma always had lots of pepper in her white gravy so I was with you Tom on the heavy pepper. Since I am still rather new here I want to make a request. As a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and a chef for over 30 years. I would like to mention you should add potatoes to cold water and let the water come up to a boil while the potatoes are in the cold water. The starch in the potatoes can react as soon as it comes in contact with boiling hat water. The outside will cook quicker and the potatoes will cook uneven.

My grandmother was a farmer and she had said if a vegetable grew in the ground, such as potatoes that you dig up, you start them cooking in cold water, but if a vegetable grows above ground, you’d start cooking them in hot water. Maybe an old wives tale, but who knows?

My ex mother in law was a full flooded Italian lady. She made the creamiest mashed potatoes you ever tasted. Her secret was to add a "handfull" of shredded mozzarella cheese. Try it....really good. P. S. My dad was a cook in the RCAF in WWII.....he would call that gravy you made "white sauce". : )

I always make too many mashed potatoes too, yeah, we do potato cakes, reheated mashed potatoes but my favorite is to leave the mashed potatoes in fridge for a few days, cook some potato soup and use the mashed potatoes as my thickener. I used to visit an old granny lady who always had to feed me, (Yes that is the Kentucky way at least in my family). She would make me potato soup using mashed potatoes, a couple cooked potatoes, celery etc. If I am not feeling like eating much I will pull out my emergency box of instant potatoes and make a little soup. I love to watch you two, I have told many friends to come and watch. I told one there is always room for one more at your table.

I was taught 2 potatoes per person, but as a kid I had my mom take me potatoes out before she mashed, and I melt butter on them, because I didn’t like mashed potatoes. As adult I love them

A good rule of thumb is to boil one or one and half potato per person. The more people then just go with one med potato per person and you will have around two servings per person when you judge like that. If we are having a salad and a couple of veggies you just eat an average serving. If you are serving just meat and potatoes then obviously your serving size will be larger. The hardest thing for me has always been cooking for two. 😊 ❤

You can add cold water or milk with corn starch to the hot gravy if it gets too thin. Just for future reference. It seriously does work. Doesn’t take very much. Maybe 1/4 cup cold liquid & 2 T corn starch. Whisk into the gravy & works like a charm.

USE CANNED EVAPORATED MILK INSTEAD OF REGULAR MILK... MAGNIFICENT FLAVOR..ALSO USE CANNED MILK FOR CREAM GRAVY...you can add the extra regular milk to both if you need more milk.
Put a Chicken bullion cube in your gravy!!

I'm lactose intolerant so I just use a lactose -free milk. You can't tell the difference. My son has celiac disease so I am going to try this with alternate flour and just see what happens. Might be a disaster, might be good. Who knows? I love white gravy. It's one of the first things my mama taught me to make. I still all these years later sometimes burn my roux and have to fix it. Stay right on it, folks. You can't look away for a second! LOL - y'all are great. I really enjoy your recipes and your stories. Blessings to you and your family, and blessings to all who are watching 🙏
