Fatal Push was the first big knock into Tarmogoyfs dominance, but now w Leyline Binding and Prismatic Ending, it's never been easier to take out early creatures.
One of the Grand Prixs I played in was sealed and someone opened up goyf, and foil goyf in their pool and were forced to pass it and not drop like you can now. I remember the dude arguing with the judge for a while.
One can argue that Fatal Push was so strong that it pushed decks looking for The Next Big Threat towards Delve creatures, which brought us from rhe humble Tasigur, Gurmag and Mandrills to stuff like Ethereal Forager and Murktide Regent. Even 3mv creatures like Uro, Tireless Tracker, and Emry could be problematic without adequate setup for Push.
Also, from a non-financial and strictly gameplay perspective, passing the Burst Lightning that would've went in his Red deck only to lose to that very Burst Lightning makes for a compelling argument. Of course, the Goyf was 5 figures at the time so yeah.
I still haven't cut it from my Abzan Midrange list, I still like it as a creature as I find it as a lot of people pass it off as "Past Powerhouse" and under estimate it every no and them
I find it funny that the examples of “Oh this is goyf but better” are a card that (as far as I can tell) sees no real play and a card that is shaping up to do the same. I think Ragavan and DRC are definitely better points, though. Like others in this comment section though I think the biggest thing against Goyf is just the fact that removal has gotten better. When the removal spells in Modern were really only Bolt and Path, it was great cause it could eat one of those two and be fine. But they’ve been printing better removal over the last decade and that means more options to kill the Goyf.
I didn't believe it was good when I first heard goyf was good. But then I saw some gameplay for modern and saw people play. And I could see why it was good. Goyf probably made me a more intuitive player.
People who think drafting Goyf ruins the integrity of Magic? *laughs in Universes Beyond sets negatively, and unecessarily, impacting competitive formats*
I got into modern recently cause I could finally afford to get the deck I wanted to play. I LOVE hardened scales with a passion, I am a green player at heart, and recently seeing a red card that "might" come to the format that can wipe my entire board for 3 mana is really disheartening since it has such a wide use. Seeing the stuff coming in MH3 really makes me question if playing constructed formats are even worth it. I have grown tired of commander and now I am getting pushed out of my new home.
@@hunterbowman98 meh its sorcery speed and useless against any non artifact using decks so its prob going to be a sideboard card that you need to bring in your own sideboard cards against
@@xaropevic7918 I play all of those too but there are no standard/pioneer players in my area. Been going to standard showdown for a month and no one has showed up lol

with those it's never been easier to take out nearly early anything sadly.
just have more creatures than the removals they have
I love your take on the Goyf pick. I totally agree. That was just an awesome moment and everybody should pick Goyf in that scenario.
Funny timing seeing this pop up right after I watched Mengucci jam Goyfs into a breach list lol
at all points in the video i was like "he saw the mh3 spoilers didn't he?"
Yeah he did. The close up stare at the camera said enough.
Makes me wanna watch the tarmogoyf rhystic studies video
Still use Tarmagoyf now, usually what finishes the game. It gets really scary when you attach a Shadowspear to it.
Not to mention it's a 2 drop that demands an answer. Or they lose.

That little stare had me chuckling.

Pioneer is the turn 4 format. Humans be super fun

It’s still relevant now.
played against a jund agro deck with goyf like a month or 2 ago. wrecked my poor mill deck
jokes on you i never was a modern player
When I won a 1k in 2019 with old school jund. That's the last time it felt good, then oko was broko

The format is also so damn expensive, barring any new blood from entering and many new players who want to branch out! Such a shame.

i mean we havent seen half of the new cards. it could be that scales will be even better after mh3

Tarmogoyf still wins occasional leagues or challenges, put it in an asmorandomardidaistaculdacar deck and it will perform.
Goyf beat my ass like 2 months ago in table 1 of a 32 player 😂 just 2 5/6 out-racing my burn
fwiw storm and burn are struggling (tho twiddle is still there) but tron an titan are definitely still meta-defining forces !
and goyf doesn't grow with SBAs, it grows before SBAs
i play tarmagoyf right now :( also first
Yep. Goyf was the correct pick. He basically won the event with that one pick. Then his weak mind allowed him to lose it for nothing.
There will never be a one mana goyf... mh3...
