2 things. Make sure you wipe the grease from the top of the shaft before putting it back in place and make sure you get the shifter piece in the hole when getting the lower unit raised up that last inch and into place. It can be tricky.
@@ProWrenching This morning I went to work on the Merc 175 black max I set up a 5 gallon tout and had a hose running to the rabbit ears the water pump was working just a slow run out the back so I think the water pump is good. I took off the caling and when I did a bolt fell out that went just behind the air intake near the motor. I tightened down the bolts on both sides. Too much air will cause the motor to bog I think.
@@ProWrenching do you know if mariner and mercury parts are interchangeable. I have a 1995 150hp mariner and seems like only thing I can find is for mercury. I know mariner is made by mercury
How's your black max running? I have a 1986 and replaced the water pump and thermostats and now it pisses well but gets hot when WOT. At idle it's dead center on the temp gauge but quickly climbs at full speed. Do I need to replace the poppet valve?
Watched other videos and it said to put the boat in gear when removing and reattaching and now the motor is stuck in gear and won’t go back to neutral. Did you do that on your install?
Yes- With the price of the lower unit oil, if you have already done your yearly maintenance, & the water pump seal hasnt gone bad and leaked water into the lower unit, you don’t have to drain it. Good point.

Thanks for the video! Im going to try that on my black max tomorrow 😂
Thanks for the video . I drained the oil and it came out milky . What do you recommend I should do next?
Sounds like you have a leak. You should have the lower unit pressure tested for leaks.

Is it true if you turn the propeller counter clockwise it could break the water pump?
It’s not good for it. That would be most likely to happen if the water pump impeller was old and brittle.

Is any gasket sealer used where you drop the lower unit or in-between any of it?
No, I didn’t use any gasket sealer.

@@AlexLopez-tk1ft yes- As far as I know they are the same.
What torque for pump housing bolts
35 inch lb torque screw, 50 in lb torque nut on the water pump body

My black max is running great. Yes- It sounds like your next step would be to replace the poppet valve, if you’re overheating at WOT.

That’s the way to do it. Make sure your lower unit is still shifted into forward gear when you reinstall so it’s aligned with the shifter.
If anyone wants to learn about Jesus Christ reply
Thx pro wrench. Sounds like a key step 🤦♂️
What’s the lil black tube for
Do you have to drain the oil? And if so what’s the reasoning?
Yes- The water pump gaskets also seal the lower unit where the oil is, so it’s good to change it when you’re installing new seals.
You don’t have to drain the lower unit to do a water pump.
