- Mercury Outboard - Water Pump Impeller Replacement on a 1990 Mercury Outboard 150 HP, Black Max, XR4, V-6 engine
Please post comments or questions you may have. I have the manual and may be able to answer any Torque Spec. you need.
Thanks!
Ed
Thanks a bunch for this!!!
Also….thanks for making me feel like I need to completely restore my engine. Yours is so CLEAN
I use a hose clamp to compress the impeller to put in the housing. Just leave about 3/16" out on on side with all vanes in the right direction, then slip into the housing and loosen hose clamp and push all the way in. Be sure and coat impeller with silicone grease beforehand!
How do you continue working and let the ice cream truck go by?
man...you are wonferful !! thanks for this too much explain video.
How hot the water can get I see some steam at the bucket is totally normal right because my motor does the same
Thanks man helped me out
I have a wire hanging off the left lower side of the lower section of the motor. It's connected to what looks like a capacitor I have a photo but don't know how to upload it here
It's best to have 2 people to do this and better to unplug the spedo hose instead of pulling the hose down (just found that easier for me) also make sure to get the forward and reverse gear in alignment due to it's easy to slide right up beside the top gear...
Did you have it in gear? Or neutral?
I thought One had to put the engine in forward to get the forward /reverse linkage to line up?
Hello,
I need a little help locating where the hose coming from the “valve thermal air” leads to. It’s the valve located between plugs 3 and 5 on that same engine. Thank you in advance.
Sorry maybe its a dumb question but what was that green stuff at the beginning
Nice little video. The only advise I would give is that when you are adding the lower gear lube, spin the prop by hand a few times to get the air out of the bearings and such.
actually it's "advice"... advice is a noun, advise is a verb 5th Grade...

Great video bud!! I just picked up a 1994 Skeeter with the Black Max 175 and I ordered a new water pump kit off Amazon. I plan on changing mine this weekend and your video will help me a lot! I do have a few questions, is the liquid gasket necessary? If so I need to get some before I start. Did you change out your thermostats? Did you have to wait until your motor got to temperature before it would “pee” at an idle? Also, I was told I couldn’t run mine using water muffs, I have to run in a tank like you did for the water pump to work? So sorry for all of the questions and I do appreciate the help! 👍🏼
Air muffs are crap and would not pee much with muffs, not enough pressure. Pees great with garbage can. Takes a few minutes to get going so give it a few. I have new video coming out I built a tank out of plywood. Get a gigantic garbage can from Home Depot.
No I don't think the liquid gasket is doing much but it was there before so I replaced where I saw it before, it's like a separation wall there.
I don't know anything about a thermostat. There is no thermostat like a car since it runs the impeller 100% of the time. Maybe I don't know something but I don't think there is a thermostats on my 2 stroke, V6.
please subscribe, trying to get to 1,000. Thanks!
My 1991 Mercury XR4 150 V-6 has 2 thermostats, one in each cylinder head. Mine does not pee until it has been running for about 90 to 120 seconds. Also if you run it with a tank the water will get hot. There is more hot water coming out of the engine than just the pee. Its best to use the muffs and the tank. That way the motor is constantly getting water that is not hot and if the muffs are not quite enough there is the tank of water there.
Great video... I got a 95 XR6 and I'm going to change my impeller hopefully this weekend. This will be a first for me. Ive watched this video several times. Looks like it should be a breeze (I hope).
Hardest part is getting everything hooked up and back in alignment when you put the lower unit back on
@@ericsweeney4544 I got it all apart last weekend. But after the I changed the water pump. Water wasn't coming out of the tell tale. So I decided to change the thermostat cause those were bad and I ran a wire through all the tubes. But still no water. So I pulled the LU off again and took the pump apart. Reassembled and it worked.
Hey! I got the same motor same year 150hp ,is the water pee coming out suppose to be verry hot or its not normal? Thanks
Mines a XR6 same thing just a little newer also wondering this ? My buzzer has been going off during no wake zones noticed not peeing well during this once wide open pees fine but water is very hot regardless I’m changing mine today if parts store has the parts
What gear is the shifter when you pulled lower unit
Must have been in Neutral
@@MuellerMechanical Should have been in FORWARD.
Awesome video! Is there anything besides all the bolts at the lower unit that might be holding on a stuck lower unit? Ive been battling with mine, apparently the previous owner never removed it to change the water pump. Is there anything up top holding onto the drive or shift shafts? Or do I just keep battling the corrosion
Most likely corrosion I had the same issue
It might just have one more bolt you are missing so look carefully. In the end I had 5 nuts and like 2 bolts.
I realize I am extremely late to this....but there is a bolt under the steering trim tab. You have to remove the anode (trim tab) to get to it
Nice video.

Thanks! MM
Have plugged the oil system and began to mix yourself or continue to use oil pump?
I'm still using the external pressurized auto fill Reservoir tank that resides in the boat
Howdy. Ive replaced the impella and the thermostats on my 1885 150 mariner and was test driving it, there was a steady stream from tell tall, after driving for about 15 mins the alarm went off and there was no water from the tell tale.. i shut the motor down.
Please help..
Colesy Coles let me know when you find the problem
I had no idea they had outboard motors in 1885.
@@josephtrapanese3310 lol
Change your impeller
Did you order that off Amazon?
Should the water exiting the motor be hot? Like nearly too hot to touch?
It should be about as hot as your motor is
Not a bad video, better if you explained what you are doing
What part number did you use?
Over torqued the crap out of that impeller housing. The 30 inch lbs is just snug next to nothing. Believe you were using ft lbs. hope the housing didn’t crack.😮
Darn you missed the ice cream truck
lmao
I noticed what is consistent in all of the Mercury pump videos is what steps are missing when reattaching the lower unit. There is a rubber hose attached to a nipple at the shift housing in all of the videos, but no one mentions what it is or where it is attached. No one includes it in the disassembly steps. In fact, some videos show it missing, but show the nipple connection inside. There was obviously one there before. When I took mine apart, there was no hose, but there was a nipple. I will put one on now, but I have no idea what it connects to outside the lower unit. Someone in the comment section here calls it a spedo hose. Maybe that connects to my speedometer. Also, it is next to impossible to line up the shift rod with its mate above. The mate moves around and you cannot see in there or move it around to match up. That would have been good to know. I bet they all had trouble but left it out of the videos because of all of the cursing. I still haven't gotten mine back together.
Yes, that hose is for the speedometer.
For anybody else having issues reassembling, use power trim to fold the engine almost all the way up then have a friend over use a thicker wire like a metal coat hanger or something to push the shift rod and water hose in to position while you push the lower unit up towards the motor
Did you lock it in forward gear before disassembly, that keeps it lined up for assembly, also if the drive shaft doesn't line up , just reach up and rotate fly wheel.
what does the silicone do ? Never seen this done before
Yes at 4:34 you can see where we pulled off the old silicone, it's on top of the steel divider wall that gets sandwiched with the upper housing. Pretty much just replaced what I found. thanks for watching! Please subscribe and I will have more boat repair vids forthcoming.
Stops exhaust gasses from getting to the pump housing, which will heat it up some and reduce life
How did you know it was bad?
ha good question, I didn't. Father in law told me to replace it every 10 years. It was never replaced and was a 1990 so thought was a good time!
do you mind if you subscribe? 1,000 is coming soon. Appreciate it!
@@MuellerMechanical 10 years? Damn... i replace mine every 1-2 years. I can tell you that its fairly easy preventative maintenace that will save you a tow or worse
Good video - BUT: Those Nylok lock nuts are meant to be tightened only one time. Never re-use them, as they will fail.
I’ve got one not pissing
Have on miffs and scared to let idle for more than a minute
did you ever find a fix mine is not peein either man only when im at lake but pees just a bit
Have to run it long enough for the thermostats tonopen
It wasn't much of a detail but a great video...
Put down those tools and flag down that ice cream truck.
You left out the part that the lower unit has to be engaged in forward gear
Did you add red loctite to a stud that uses a nylock?
Nylocks can be reusable, but if you can finger tighten it past the nylon "prevailing torque" without resistance, it might be time for a new one or a lil threadlocker if you don't have a replacement on hand. Blue or orange threadlocker might have been a better option.
@@rts3613 you're gonna have a tough time with that red... good luck
ICE CREAM!!!!
If you take the prop off it's a lot lighter
Do u have to put gear in forward befor drop
Music over the engine running? This is insanity
Check out this vid at 4:30, let me know if you like this one better.
th-cam.com/video/XBL6MgzLyZo/w-d-xo.html
that engines running too hot, also running without stats by the looks of it.
Wrong tightening impeller cap...
You didn't see all that water in your lower unit gear lube. Milk shake, you have bad prop and possibly driveshaft seals.
George, check out this vid from yesterday. I think I'm good, prop good, driveshaft good.

thanks,

ALWAYS check the little washers on the gear housing drain/vent screws. It may save a ton of $$$$
Damn Dude... Polish that prop...! Now which way were those impeller blades facing again...??? lol Bolts are meaasured by their thread diameter & thread pitch, NOT THEIR HEX HEAD SIZE...!
Does a 1989 mercury 200 black max have a a row
Termastat. Put on mew water pump but still running hot and no water from the tell tell. Any suggestions
Jin Meyio change it
Do u have to put in gear
