One of my closest friends from high school went to Alaska to work during the summer and she stayed there. She built her own log cabin, became an expert seamstress that sold custom Anoraks to wealthy tourists, raised sled dogs and competed in races with her team and lived a life filled with joy and adventure. She lived in Alaska for about 40 years before she was diagnosed with an incurable brain disease. Rather than become totally disabled and live in a bed, she wrote me a 5 page letter explaining her condition and decision to fly to Switzerland where she was able to use their laws to end her life. Rest in Peace, Becky. You lived 3 people’s lives in your one. I hope you are leading your team in the next life my friend. We miss you ❤

      @sanfranciscobay ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's a difficult but simple life ending decision to make. She didn't want to suffer dying. She wanted to die while she was functional. Was she an American Citizen or dual Citizenship? 2 years ago this Thanksgiving, my Brother (age 66) who lived in Oregon was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer and hung himself in his house. He was divorced and had 3 children late 20's. 2 months ago, a friend of mine age 60, shot himself in the head and died from the injury. Both people never mentioned suicide to me before they killed themself.

@@sanfranciscobay My sincerest condolences to you for your losses. My friend was an American citizen. She was a resident of the state of Washington, which has laws that allow for assisted suicide but she didn’t meet the requirements of our state. Her personal physician, along with several other specialists in that particular field, told her she had a limited amount of time to live but she would progressively get worse and lose her ability to use her body, essentially becoming totally disabled and not able to control any bodily functions. And with her condition worsening, she would have to deal with intractable pain issues. Rather than taking a slow, painful path towards the end, she chose to fly to Switzerland, which has more liberal euthanasia policies. Her doctor supported her decision and provided her with the information that she could use to make an informed choice. Her research included having multiple conversations with me, as my older brother made a similar decision to stop all medical interventions when he contracted Covid and died from the damage caused by the illness. We had long conversations about suicide and how it affected the people left behind and the arguments for and against euthanasia. I cannot imagine how alone she must have felt in Switzerland, without any family or friends to be there with her at the end. I think that is what haunts me to this day. I’m not a wealthy person, nor is anyone in her family. Knowing this, she kept the decision to herself and left goodbye letters for her family and some close friends. I think she didn’t want anyone close to her to put themselves into debt, because I am sure that her family would have mortgaged themselves to send someone to be with her at the end. I hope she had a chance to view the beautiful mountains of Switzerland before she passed. I know she loved the wild outdoors.

@@briangarrow448 Very sad for her. I believe there's volunteers who sit near you so nobody dies alone. She sounds like a very strong person to do this. The option of living until you die sounds much worse.

@@AlluringArctic That is exactly what I would have guessed! Anyone who would dedicate a year of their life finding, buying, and refitting a boat to sail to a difficult location so they could ski from the vessel has definitely got snow in their veins. Of course, you could have travelled to a skiing destination in a much easier, less expensive way but you chose to sail! And that why I’m here. I find your story very compelling.

Pro Tip: Run a strong wire centerline and clip into that. If your safety harness is clipped into an exterior line and you're washed overboard, you'll just be drug through ice-cold water, cold-soaked, and may not be heard by those onboard. But if you're clipped to a center line and keep your safety harness line short, it's highly improbable you'll be washed overboard at all. If structures like the mast impede movement, use two lines/clips from your harness to the center line. That way, you can always be clipped in with at least one line as you move past centerline structures.

I was sailing in rough weather in Northern call and was just clipped into the boat with along and was knocked over board while the boat was moving along took all my strength to crawl back into the cockpit. I cut a section of climbing rope and did exactly like you said and it allowed me to sail single hand at night in rough weather totally secure no matter where I had to go. I don't understand why more people don't use that system?

HI, First off, congratulation on how the channel is growing. You totally deserves it.
Second off, I'm still amazed that you are in this nature, with these gorgeous anchorages (and yes, the ones in "civilisation" too) and being completely alone (well maybe not in "civilization" but 20 year round people is completely acceptable). Not another boat in view, compered to where I am where you cannot find any spots after 4 pm, and you're parked in bunches of three or four at the docks. I'm not here for the skiing, somewhat for the sailing but mostly for the nature and views.
Thirdly off, I'm guessing that Sohvi has defended her thesis by now and is a fully fledged PhD. My sincere congratulations.
And fourthly off, I find it so refreshing that you have the gumption to call a spade a spade with your Patreon speech. Honestly that's what all Patreon searching content creators want, because they want food on the table and clothes to wear. The most outraged ones are the few people getting insanely rich from that platform, but as far as I've heard they are few and far between. If they want to scam their Patrons, that's between their conscience and them, isn't it. I hope you now have enough people for you having a living wage. Yours, Ann

After all this time I was bored with some of the other ones I have subscribed to and came across your page. At first, I was very skeptical, however I soon found that I was very addicted to what you produce. First of all, I compliment you for your work, but the more I watch you I can appreciate your knowledge and expertise in sailing. Your choice of boat was superb. Woohoo! One of your best. episodes. ever! We worked in the ski industry for 17 years before moving aboard our sailboat 7 years ago, so this episode was a joy to watch, as all are your episodes, really. It was so good to see you back at the top of a mountain. You are reaching your goals and taking all of us along with you, thank you. Cheers and congratulations to Sohvi, well done!

Cooking Tip: If the batter is too thin, or you have used insufficient eggs then you may find that your pancakes break up easily and fall apart.

    Wow,
I’ve made that Gulf of Alaska many times, and I’ve never seen it as calm as the trip that you guys have made.
Thanks for sharing your trip. Take care, all the best, and God bless.

In the open water sailing part of the video, the background looks so amazing, it looks fake as if it were a painted background for a hollywood film in the 1960s! Nice work.

We stayed at Yakutat as we travelled down the Inside Passage on the MHS (Marine Highway System) Ferries. Loved the area. I have been hanging out for your next video and this video was fantastic great yacht, good sailing and superb skiing. Truly exceptional.

Super video, crossing the Gulf. You manage to show the scary ocean swell from the camera on your boat. Glad to see you back to skiing again. Sovhi has a master in sailing and doctoral in International Relations. Great job.

Another incredible video. American pancakes: 1 cup flour, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons of butter or oil, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 cup milk (or water or buttermilk). Mix until you make a thick batter. If mix is too thick, add a little more milk. Put some butter or oil in griddle or pan and add some pancake mix. When bubbles appear flip and cook the other side. Use about medium heat.

Just a brilliant episode, breathtaking. You must be really pleased with your endeavours indeed. Your are in your dreams. There is another couple out on their first boat on You tube I watch called Tula Tribe, their phrase to describe their journey
    ‘We’re bloody doing it!’
    You are too.
Congratulations on the first mate getting her Ph.D

It's the cheerful climbing of 1000's of metres for 20 minutes skiing that I can't get my head around! Although I reluctantly accept that the views are unlike anything I've seen in more sanitised Alpine mountains. Brilliant channel.
