As a Schumann devotee, I love his underlying painful emotion indwelling in all his music.

Dude even his fun pieces like Carnaval Op.9, No. 14 "Reconnaissance" have like a deep sadness in them
That sound starts off sounding like a party, like I'm about to place bets at a saloon, and then suddenly,
      Morose 💀
But that's ok its just for a second then back to party as the piece ends lol

Quanto è vero ciò che lei dice. Condivido l'amore per Schumann. Poi questo attacco magnifico, questa melodia in mi bemolle maggiore, sublime, sognante all'ennesima potenza.

Excellent performance! Bernstein knocks the concert master's folder and music off his stand at 7:56 in the first movement and they just play on like nothing's happened.

I loved the big hug and kiss he gave the concert master at the end to make up for it.

The alto trombone/horn tune from 24:11 is fantastic. No trace of difficulty.

Bernstein's conducting is fabulous as always, using his whole body to communicate, his shoulders, body language and facial expression. Wonderful as always

You might also enjoy Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic performing this work. Not so very different in tempo or approach, and yet.. different. You won't be disappointed, especially in the 4th mvt (Feierlich~Solemn) After a few listenings, that movement brought to mind Hans Zimmer's Theme for the Netflix production of "The Crown". I suspect he likes that one too. He seems to have been inspired by it in it tone, and deportment. Enjoy

I like the funny face Bernstein does every time he wants to hear the bassoon cut through.

Bernstein conducted the other three Schumann symphonies often, but only conducted the Rhenish here and in a 1960 cycle in New York.

Sensacional, maestro tem o controle total da orquestra... e a mesma se sente segura sob sua batuta e os metais roubam a cena no 3° movimento.... Bravo.. Bravo !!!!

Does anybody know a symphony about the birth, the life and the end of a river into the ocean. That was symphony that my music teacher was explaining as it was playing long time ago when I was 11 years old.

Surely it is Smetana's "Vltava" ("Die Moldau" in German)? Try that. Not a symphony but a relatively short "tone poem" narrating the river's progress from where it arises to when it meets the ocean. It is one of six pieces in "Má vlast" (My country).

This wonderful symphony might have been written for your namesake, Nikisch, judging from the little we can still hear and all we’ve read. Arthur evoked immense romantic surges with minimal gestures from hands jutting out from equally immense cuffs. Lenny’s technique is of course quite the opposite but here (and elsewhere) I hear hammer blows, not the mighty Rhine, though in fairness Schumann did not use that title. Perhaps Bernstein had another Wagnerian image in mind - Siegfried’s anvil.

does anyone else think the beginning of this sounds exactly like the main theme from the movie Willow?

Yes. Horner was inspired by this and the Pastorale symphony by Beethoven.
