And discharge protecting what he has left of his sister not knowing she was still alive, story is rlly saddening, I remember approaching them for the first time, having the witch's ring from the start and everything I was like 😢😢

I know I could make a joke about the "prepare to cry" series, but i can't lie. Hearing about the connection you and Sif would have if you fought Manus with him, and killed Artorias before going to his boss fight, literally made me tear up. Sif wanting to protect you, a hero, who ended his old master's suffering, and helped him stop the spread of the abyss. The fact that he howls in grief, knowing full well that he will have to kill you, or fail, leaving you to potentially succumb to the abyss, is just heartbreaking.
This is by far the most relaxing narration I’ve heard in a while, I was having a panic attack that kept my up well into 1AM, but I found this video and was able to fall asleep in 20 minutes. @@Thebrotherscode Incredible timing. I watched the first have today and I’m finishing up the second half when I open my shop tomorrow. And I’ll be rewatching!
I always felt that the Dragons were everlasting due to their scales, the scales allowed them to be immortal and that's why Seath the Scaleless was so jealous and full of hatred toward the other dragons; and why he would become a traitor against them; because unlike his ilk he was scaleless and thus mortal. Also why he was so interested in crystal magics, so he could make artificial scales out of crystals to become immortal or at the least extend his life.
You're right- others have pointed out that in the opening cutscene, Seath is shown holding a dragon scale that crumbles as he lets out a cry of anguish, which implies his whole goal in siding with Gwyn was to achieve immortality like the other dragons
@@NuevoExistence What are you talking about? There are no "crystals of immortality" in dark souls. Seath did not _find_ anything, he created the crystal magic as well as various other magics.
Man, even after all these years. All these playthroughs, hearing the story of Artorias, Sif, and the player always breaks my heart. And hearing that pained howl and seeing the recognition in Sifs eyes, knowing what's about to have to happen...it still brings tears to my eyes. I dont know about anyone else, but the first time I encountered this, I actually got so upset that I put my controller down and just accepted defeat. Sif is the best boy. Only trying to do the best for his previous master and current friend. He will never be forgotten. ❤️

I thought this video was going to cover the entire trilogy. Very impressive how much lore you were able to obtain for the story of the first game. Looking forward to your video on 2!
I never knew how powerful and deep the story and lore of this game was until now. I now have a strong appreciation for this game that I never knew I would gain. Very well done.
1:01:55 Ornstein likely didn't die at archdragon peak, as his armour is merely lying around on the ground. Seeing as people go to archdragon peak in order to become dragons, and you fight a massive dragon right above where you find his armour, I think what likely happened was that Ornstein being far stronger than most men who try to become dragons, became the king of the storm.
Saying ehich dragon ornstein is is kinda impossible but I find him being dead unlikely and it more like he did throw his armor away as it isn't on a corpse or in a chest just laying on the ground
What a great video! Souls is a franchise that really lends itself to these kinds of videos. And you made the most complete, least contradictory video on DS1 I've seen thus far. I REALLY liked how you included all the side characters' stories and that you make it absolutely clear when you enter the territory of speculation. I hope you do the entire trilogy like this because DS2 is the one game I've never played and I absolutely did NOT understand DS3.
Dark Souls lore is probably my most favorite storytelling then any of the other Souls-Borne games. When I usually can't sleep I put on a Lore video. I always find myself always coming back to this video of Dark Souls Lore. It's just so calming and tells the Lore very well. Thank you for helping me sleep.
This is just a little nitpick, but the Stray Demon was actually at the Undead Asylum the whole time. You actually see it walking right at the beginning as you exit the cell. The Asylum Demon is in the upper part.
Wow man the story of Quelana and the fair lady.. it's so tragic.. i really felt that one. Rage.. rage against the dying of the light, the coming of darkness. What a masterpiece.
Dang I actually got emotional from this. This game was my favorite one of all time and i was so interested in it. I love miyazaki and all of his work. Beautiful yet somber and dark

A fellow vaat watcher, a man of culture I see. I have not watched every upload, not even close. I do hold his work in very high regard. Would you say this man here did his homework? No glaring misinterpretations? Would it hold vaat's approval would you think?
@@uncaged1180 he's probably the most well-known for how prolific he is but i wouldnt say he's the best. For surface level stuff he's fine but his theories can tend to be kind of nonsensical. Their timeline video, the one about demons, and the one about the Way of White are all really good though.
Yea these guys are really good. I think vaati has been off lately. For awhile actually. His elden ring content leaves a lot to be desired. He just seems like he wants to sell shirts and is resting on his laurels. Or he lost the passion. He takes forever now too.

We're lucky to have played a game in a time where this video exists. They actually said they plan to do the trilogy! Dark Souls 2's video is out actually. Have you played any other Souls games? and what are you playing now? Just curious :)
Every time I finish a game, the FIRST thing I do is check your channel to see if you covered it. Your story telling skills are 10/10 and you obviously put so much prep, research, editing and love into these videos. I can never just watch them one time either. Thank you for your hard work ❤
This was absolutely amazing. Any other video on this topic was too convoluted and quickly changed from character to character, twisting and turning. This was told like a true story, a beginning, middle, and end. Amazing.
Honestly, ending on Aldia's question truly is the fitting culmination of the story of Dark Souls. Beyond Light and Dark, is there something destined for humanity in the scope of the cycle or is everything just supposed to play out all over again in perpetuity? Is there really no end to Gwyn's misdeed?
The dark souls 3 tells me that the only salvation is in the painted world. Gwyn has done something irrevocable, irreversible. The painted world of Ash, made from the blood of the dark soul seems to be the only hope. Our battle with Gael at the end of all things, tells us that indeed, after do long, ash inherits the world. Almost like the age of ancients. Nothing of the world remains. Except us. Truly absurdist, as the other replier said.
Except a world borne from a Lord soul will still bear remnants of the cycle of power. Not to mention GRRM already leaked in a seminar QnA that Elden Ring was a sequel to Dark Souls 3. After playing Elden Ring, the painted world is clearly Elden Ring. I believe the true ending of Dark Souls 3 would be the ending where you present the first flame to the firekeeper, only to strike her down once she extracts the ember and steal it for yourself and consume it like any consumable ember. Just like how the world bore the undead curse to bring balance caused by gwyn’s misalignment, the unkindled were brought back with one purpose, to bring the Lord’s of Cinder to kneel, but killing the firekeeper and robbing the ember even queues the ominous dialogue. “Unfit even to be cinder” you are not a Lord of Cinder. You are NOT part of the cycle. You were supposed to be the solution to continue to cycle one way or another ( preserve the flame, or allow an age of darkness ). But when you deny the firekeeper to care for the ember to bloom again, you truly extinguish the first flame’s Lord Souls, save the Dark Soul, which would remain in the ringed city under midir’s eye. As midir is a dragon, who were present before the advent of souls in the Land, I dont doubt he would adjust in a world post-cycle of fire, but even that isn’t set in stone.
I have been thinking about this for several years now and I have not come closer to a satisfying answer The beginning of the Dark Souls 1 is so much harder to understand than the rest of it, if only we had just a tiny bit more info
Personally I just assume that the devs went with that to make it more dramatic and to make it obvious that the player should inspect the corpse and any further corpses they come across. When you think about it there are very few objects in dark souls that do not come off of corpses or from chests.
@@joshuagibbons8821 Perhaps my memory is just faulty, I know it happens in dark souls three but can you recall any instances in dark souls one where there is an item either not in a chest or on a corpse? Just laying there in the world?
Because of the length I thought this was the trilogy. Even though it isn't, this is hands down the best dark souls lore video ever. I can't wait till you guys get to Dark Souls 3, my first ever souls game.

Thank god I found this video, just finished the game yesterday and I didn't knew everything at all, this video showed me so many things I didn't knew like fair Lady could die due to her saving all the infected or the bed of chaos things, maybe my simple gratitude is useless but making a 2 hour video explaining a whole story, that is dedication and love what you do, Thanks for doing this
I watched a lot of videos explaining the story of Dark Souls but so far this is the most complete and detailed of all. What an amazing work, keep up this great quality.
Seriously well done. I started with DS3, and I really liked it for it's gameplay, but I never could've imagined that the lore within the series could be so deep.
I’ve watched plentiful videos on DS lore, but while those fade from memory, I know this one will sit for a long time hereafter in my mind. Thank you for a great piece of content.
The story of Artorias is the best. The fact that Oolacile is in the past and Sif. It's all so sad yet grand. One of my favorite games of all time and definitely my favorite Souls/Borne game.
Having played Dark Souls for hundreds and hundreds of hours, I found myself lost within your story telling and in awe at things I had missed when it comes to the story. Well done sir, you earned my like and a sub 👍
Great vid. I've played the souls game so many times, read a million speculation threads, and watched countless theory and lore videos, but I'm always excited to reexamine the story and hear new perspectives.
I've been playing this series for several years but never quite dove into the story. Today I decided to play this video like a podcast while I was playing another game, which I ended up closing to pay full attention to this, not only because of the story, but because of your narration as well, you had me completely hooked. Great job, I'll go watch the other videos now.
I’ve been with the soul series since demon souls first came out. It has been one of the most important parts of my life and has truly defined who I am as a gamer. You have not only brought the story of dark souls to life, but made it memorable. I applaud you, this was excellent and a true pleasure to see. I’ve subbed and I hope you get many more, you guys deserve it
What I love most about the Souls lore is how you can play through all 4 games and not really read too deep into item or weapon descriptions, only vaguely listen to NPC dialogue and you could easily be forgiven for completing the games and not realizing how vast and deep and interconnected the lore and stories are. The Souls series is the perfect example of a video game lore iceberg where 99.9% is hidden underneath. You wouldn't be faulted for putting the series in the category of storyless and just another overly difficult game with nothing deeper. Fromsoft is amazing at making the player work for the story, to read every item/weapon description , to really have to think to figure out secrets. But once you learn the story and how deep the lore truly is you start to really admire Miyazaki's ability to make something look overlysimplified and mundane when in fact I personally could without a doubt say that the Souls story/lore is one of the best ever written imo. Thankfully we have lore channels like Vaati and Ashen, and now you Brother's Code, This is the first video of your I came across and I'm more than happy to sub and share your channel. The Souls games will always have a very very special place in my heart because they rekindled my love of the RPG genre. Amazing video my friend, can't wait to watch your other content!
That's one of the best part about the Soulsborne games. The story is never shoved down our throats by unending dialogues and player control taken away every 5 minutes to watch a cutscene. It's the RPG that puts playing it before everything else and the deep lore if cared for is just cherry on top
Even tho I’ve seen many vids on the story of the Dark Souls series, I still find them interesting and enjoy watching new ones. This vid is definitely among some of the best. So so really really good - thanks BC! Looking forward to the next 2!
I've been watching dark souls lore videos for 7+ years, This has to be one of the most well put together beginning to end story's on TH-cam for dark souls 1 and you only touch the tip of the iceberg. It's insane how much lore really is packed away inside the DS universe. I can't wait to see what you guy's pull out your hat for DS2 and DS3 maybe even demon souls. One thing that I really love about the souls series is the way you have to hunt for lore, keeps it fun when you find something you may have missed as small as that information maybe About to go watch your Bloodborne Story Explained, after watching this I honestly can't wait 🤯😍
@@hugodogobob Saying they're bad at telling the story isn't really true when they intended for it to be mysterious and require a lot of thinming and theorizing to figure out whats going on definetly improves the story than if it was just cutscenes telling you everything

Discovered this & part 2 yesterday & am watching for the fourth time now. I can't stop. I'm trapped. And I can't complain. By far the best lore presentation I've seen so far. Keep it coming!
It’s a little bit poetic how Gwyn took every step he could and did everything in his power to continue the age of fire, and not let the darkness reign over the gods. And even after everything, when you reach the Kiln of the First Flame, Gwyn is a husk of his former self, having sacrificed his own soul to keep the flame alive. This video truly is a perfect in-depth dive into the beautiful story and lore that FromSoftware and Miyazaki crafted for this game. If you do end up doing a video on Dark Souls 2 and 3, I’ll definitely be checking those out, and you have 100% earned a new subscriber.
I counted around 3-4 minor mistakes in the video, like 45:00 - this is not the fair lady clasping Quelana's tome, this is Quelana dead snuggling up to her sister's spider corpse. Or 1:05:00 this demon can be seen from the beginning through the bars, they didn't send another demon because you killed the previous one. He's there from the game's start. Also I went to make a drink at some point so maybe I missed it, but I think you didn't talk about the Nameless King's bedroom in Anor Londo? And how it's home to the strongest titanite demon? Still despite that, very happy that a souls lore video came out in 2021. This can only be applauded! Subbed!
One mistake I saw was about ceaseless discharge, he was NOT the first demon, that title goes to the Demon Firesage who you encounter later, he was the first demon created by the chaos flame. Ceaseless turns into a demon after dropping the ring he was given by his sisters, all this is noted in item descriptions and I'm shocked they managed to mistake that.
@@BischKing Yeah he's not, the furtive pigmy is primeval man as a collective whole, not one single being. A mistake many people make. Because the dark soul is shared between all humans equally.
This is the best, easy explanatory ,very understanding story that i found in all the darks souls lore videos on youtube. As a newbie in the DS series i appreciate the time and efforts you guys puts for making this , You opened my eyes and my point of view of everything in the game , Now I understand why this game still hold a special ranking place after 13 years .
The Age of Dark definitely comes in the End of Fire ending of Dark Souls 3. Just because Fire will still exist doesn't mean the Age of Fire will return. Fire is prerequisite for the existence of Dark, for without disparity there is only endless grey. Ancients persist in the Age of Fire, just as they and Fire both will persist in the Age of Dark. Time continues. When the Age of Dark ends, a new Age, not of Fire, Darkness, or Ancients, shall come.
The Usurpation of Fire will always be my favorite ending for that reason. Its at the same time still the Age of Fire since the First Flame still exists and the Age of Dark as the First Flame is now "gone" so to speak
I've watched this video three times since I found it last week. Beautifully done. Your compilation of dialogue at the end was amazing with the background music. Siegmeyer and Solaire's stories were always heart-wrenching
As a newcomer to Dark Souls, i was very confused at the lore during my first blind playthrough. That's when a lot of people told me that this series relies in a sort of " enviromental storytelling " and after a few more playthroughs, i had a lot of lore pieces, but always had a hard time putting them together, until this video. What a breathtaking masterpiece of storytelling. Can't wait for a new playthrough and to check the other games. Simply stupendous video, much thanks for this experience.

The fact that he howls in grief, knowing full well that he will have to kill you, or fail, leaving you to potentially succumb to the abyss, is just heartbreaking.

@@rogeryoungblood2452 this has a bit of three because they’re so intertwined, and there’s a little bit of two, mostly in the form of aldia.

Ornstein likely didn't die at archdragon peak, as his armour is merely lying around on the ground. Seeing as people go to archdragon peak in order to become dragons, and you fight a massive dragon right above where you find his armour, I think what likely happened was that Ornstein being far stronger than most men who try to become dragons, became the king of the storm.
the king of the storm was the drake befriended by the nameless king when he was still on gwyn's side
He didnt become the drake but it if he did anything it is quite possible he became the dragon that you fight in the beginning
i thought nameless king was solaire

Thank you for watching, we appreciate the kind words, we are currently working on Dark Souls II, and plan on doing the entire trilogy!
Dark souls 2 is to Dark souls 1, as ancient sumer and cavemen are to us. Dark souls 3 is to dark souls 1, as world war 1 is to world war 2.

@@uncaged1180 he's probably the most well-known for how prolific he is but i wouldnt say he's the best. For surface level stuff he's fine but his theories can tend to be kind of nonsensical. Their timeline video, the one about demons, and the one about the Way of White are all really good though.

It seems most likely to be a play on Sisyphus and his boulder. It's more absurdist than existential.
As midir is a dragon, who were present before the advent of souls in the Land, I dont doubt he would adjust in a world post-cycle of fire, but even that isn’t set in stone.
probably not a good place to mention that I'm fairly onboard with the Age of Fire continuing into perpetuity, especially considering the alternative.
What I wanna know, is who's corpse did Oscar drop down. It's pretty raw of him to drop the corpse of the key's bearer and not just the key.
I have been thinking about this for several years now and I have not come closer to a satisfying answer
The beginning of the Dark Souls 1 is so much harder to understand than the rest of it, if only we had just a tiny bit more info
Personally I just assume that the devs went with that to make it more dramatic and to make it obvious that the player should inspect the corpse and any further corpses they come across. When you think about it there are very few objects in dark souls that do not come off of corpses or from chests.
I always took it as an inside joke to the player, that items are always found on corpses so Oscar tosses you a corpse lol
@@joshuagibbons8821 Perhaps my memory is just faulty, I know it happens in dark souls three but can you recall any instances in dark souls one where there is an item either not in a chest or on a corpse? Just laying there in the world?

Man, each time I come across a quality DS video, like this:

The story of Artorias is the best story in any RPG. Dark Souls doesn't get enough credit in the area of story telling.
They do get enough. They created a fantastic story but they aren't great at telling that story!
@@hugodogobob Saying they're bad at telling the story isn't really true when they intended for it to be mysterious and require a lot of thinming and theorizing to figure out whats going on definetly improves the story than if it was just cutscenes telling you everything
@@hugodogobob I actually like this approach, so we have to get out of our way to find out about the story instead of just giving a story in our hands.

I've heard this story countless times but I'm always welcome to hear it from new people.
Plus im pretty sure manus isnt the furtive pigmy

The Age of Dark definitely comes in the End of Fire ending of Dark Souls 3. Just because Fire will still exist doesn't mean the Age of Fire will return. Fire is prerequisite for the existence of Dark, for without disparity there is only endless grey. Ancients persist in the Age of Fire, just as they and Fire both will persist in the Age of Dark. Time continues. When the Age of Dark ends, a new Age, not of Fire, Darkness, or Ancients, shall come.
