Back home this week, I was flying back Friday so had to push the video to Sunday to have enough time. Class is late but that's NOT a reason to be late for class!! 😌pro perspective tip: EVERYTHING STARTS AS A BOX
I’m self taught and I’m finally getting to a place where my art is actually GOOD, so rare I know, right? This is soooo helpful because I’m almost done my art piece and will start the next soon. This is so vital but something I barely touch on since I mainly do portraits floating in backgrounds haha. Thank you sooo much!
Knowing a bit of perspective will also benefit your portraits, given that they're not always just facing the viewer straight ahead and on eye level. I always struggled figuring out the right amount of foreshortening and how much smaller the other eye should appear, for instance. Rigorously constructing a perspective grid really helps with figuring that out. After all, heads are also just boxes with a lot of corners clipped away.
marc, thanks for teaching me how to draw. I was once drawing carelessly but with your help, i've learned alot and the fun thing is EVERYTHING YOU DO IS FREE. Godspeed marc!
@@waterwong12 yes and no. you learn prespective + construction to build up to drawing the enviroment. he's showing that the small steps and rudimentary boxes can add up to something much bigger
@@waterwong12 no, the point of perspective is learning to draw the way a human eye sees. The reason we can look at something and guess how far away it is is because of rules like perspective. Its fundamental to making things look realistic. Otherwise youre not gonna be able to draw anything but flat, 2d planes. "Drawing environments" is what you need to look up if that's what youre trying to do. if you just wanna know how to make your image look like a 3-dimensional space, then thats what perspective can help you with. You do need to understand perspective to be able to draw detailed environments, but they arent one in the same
something i only now learned is that this example also has good composition and contains diagonal and pyramid composition. maybe even rule of thirds. Might have not been intentional but due to your years of experience its just muscle memory. But this is something to keep in mind for anyone reading this.
when you broke down the different layers, it immediately reminded me of my time baking different maps in my 3D Environments like - Albedo/Flat color layer, baking AO layer, Light baking Layer, roughness, emissive maps. This layering process will deffo help me with my concepts
Actual brilliant timing! I started working on my comic this month and I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday about how I'm struggling to get the perspective of buildings right for all these dynamic shots I wanted. This is really convenient, thank you!!
I never knew you just need simple shapes to modify into amazing buildings! I never have motivation to draw buildings 'cause I think they are too complicated and hard to start drawing. You are like an angel!
I spent 3 hours not knowing how to do the background for a drawing and got so stressed over it because i couldn't find the right direction of the ground. After watching this, it literally opened my eyes!!!
Woah woah woah... Why have NONE of my art teachers told me about the corner trick??? I spent so much time drawing cubes in perspective, and it was this easy to make interesting shapes THE WHOLE TIME????
honestly, this really simplified perspective better than my technology subject at school! the carving method you taught is really easy and helped me understand perspective more. thank you.
Marc your the best art teacher that came to my journey as a alone artist in home. That you so much for all your educational and really outstanding things you share with us.❤❤❤ take care 🎉😊
Ever since I started watching your videos. Learning the basics has improved all of my newer designs. The way you teach does not make things feel complicated. I feel things become more and more effortless. Very grateful.
That was a great little perspective lesson, exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for including the section near the end about finding the center of the building, most short lectures don't include that and it's super important
I think without my friend I wouldn't have improved at art, since he pushed me to be better and he also introduced me to you, I've been drawing for years but i never really got good at it, not until around 2022 where i decided to finally seriously learn how to draw. And now you're the go-to art teacher i go to when i have trouble!
omg thanks you so much for this video, Marc, for many years I studied only anatomy, because of the amount of details it was scary to take on drawing cities, etc. and it’s like that, nothing complicated, the main thing is the right base sorry for my eng
Practice drawing boxes in perspective (Drawabox 250 box challenge for instance). For characters, you can draw one huge box in perspective for a static pose or better yet draw multiple boxes (for head, torso, limbs) in perspective for a more dynamic pose.
Your face is the most amazing drawing exercise 😁 so expressive! I may or may not have made some screenshots... I'm sure the tutorial is great too, didn't get to that yet 😇
First time commenting, thank you for posting this. I’m in Term 1 of your art school and having this as a bite sized review is helpful! I would love to see more perspective videos! Thanks for all you do!
Omg I'm so early! Thank you so much marc for dedicating your time for us to evolve our art. It really means a lot to have someone who encourages and uplifts our talents as well as knowing there is a way to make our gifts into a career. Your videos are very helpful and your classes are very affordable instead of going to college. I would recommend your classes if I was a art teacher because you actually have/had a job at blizzard!
Loved this so much!!!!!!!! Thank you!!! I’ve never drawn and I’m 16 but I just decided I want to learn how to draw. This video made me realize how easy it can be when broken down! I know it will get harder but I will be practicing this! Tysm!
Thank you so much for this! Ive been trying to study perspective and background but it's been super confusing. I love how you dumbed it down here, I can finally understand it 😭
I now understand perspective better, however, i wish i could find a method to learn how to add details like you did. I usually don't know what to do with... Boxes. And maybe choosing a good reference too. Anyway, fun and informative as usual. Thank you for the video!
Thank you, Marc. 😊 In future vids, could you refresh our brains on what you do to avoif suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome from long hours in a seated position? I start to feel nauseous after a while. Guess it's cause i don't take frequent breaks to change position. 😅
I think the main problem I have with most perspective videos is that they mostly teach showing examples with environments. I wish I could see this being applied to drawing the human figure so I could understand it better. After all, it is said to be a basic skill, so I would to know how to apply it in the main thing I want to draw. I really don't know how to apply it since the body parts are not even facing the same direction, therefore it is hard to apply what is shown where lines vanish towards the predefined vanishing points. Also, drawing with the guidelines make it way easier, however the vanishing points can be beyond the canvas, so it becomes hard to draw, especially on paper.
Marc this is a beautifully told explanation of 1 point perspective. I love the finished work. Reminds me of the art you find in Made in Abyss. Time for me to back and give this a go. I won’t use others colours. I suck at drawing and when using digital colour my taste is as bad when using my pencils and markers 🤣🤣 I’ll grey scale after spending hours sketching the scene.
I've been following you for a few years, and other perspective videos (even some perspective art classes that I've taken from accredited art schools) have not provided the level of value in demonstrating the WHY of perspective importance in creating a finished piece. If you were to further polish that street at the end, what are the next steps you would take? Always a fan Marc, I love to put on your stuff and jam out in my sketchbooks!
thank you for the video! I have a game jam approaching and I'll have to draw both characters and backgrounds and even though I have some experience with bgs I still feel a bit intimidated by them
I love the more environment centric tutorials! I'm always grateful for those. I always thought perspective is easier and more enjoyable than anatomy, maybe because it's less error-prone. We don't see fantasy environments every day so we can't tell if something is very off, meanwhile we see humans every day so it's hard to be really accurate with it. And then there's anatomy in perspective.... I have a little unrelated question though if you don't mind; I'm slowly getting used to drawing digitally (I've been drawing with pencils & fineliners all the time) and I wonder should I be resting my hand on the tablet?(non display) I feel really weird compared to hand-free on paper. I assume it could be a matter of getting used to it, but I feel that resting my hand/pinky on the tablet and drawing from the elbow/shoulder is actually way smoother than having it floating. Is one of the options bad for health? I wouldn't want to get a carpal tunnel in the future really..
Most tablets block palm inputs, even those with a display. If your drawing tablet is registering your hand in some way, you must have touch controls on (if your device supports it). Otherwise, you should be resting your hand and holding the pen comfortably, the same way you would with pen and paper.
Such an awesome tutorial, thanks for sharing. I like how you started with beginner level fundamentals to crazy studio like backgrounds. Awesome content!
Awesome video. I have learnt a ot about perspective but this was a good refresher with some cool insights. Plus I love the humour too. I have liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work.

How the time flies ...
could you do a video on how to colour your backgrounds?

@@No-jr4mp well then, if you think about it that way, first artists where "nature taught"

marc, thanks for teaching me how to draw. I was once drawing carelessly but with your help, i've learned alot and the fun thing is EVERYTHING YOU DO IS FREE. Godspeed marc!
I really wish you could've shown a time lapse of you drawing that environment. It honestly feels like a "draw the rest of the owl" kind of thing.
the point of this video was basic perspective, not environmental design.
@@_Emit_ yea, but the point of learning perspective is to draw the environment.
@waterwong12 nah the point of learning perspective is because it is an art fundamental, not specifically for drawing environment as you've suggested.
@@waterwong12 yes and no. you learn prespective + construction to build up to drawing the enviroment. he's showing that the small steps and rudimentary boxes can add up to something much bigger
