Just completed my first octoplait eye splice - no tears, all the toys still in the pram! Thanks for such a clear explanation. Nice relaxed pace and conversational style. If you get another free hour in the sunshine it would be great to see some more rope work.
Great video on splicing 8 strand multiplait. A couple of tips that may help, on a small rope like that I put the swedish fid in the other way (pointing up the rope) and pull the strand through with my thumb on the strand in the dish of the fid, only open up what you need to get the strand through and no more otherwise you will struggle to get the last strands tucked towards the end of the splice in a tightly laid up or used rope. If I find I pick up fibres with the point of the fid from the strand I am tucking under then try putting the fid in upside down then rotate fid to put your strand in dish once you have lifted enough to pass through the strand you are tucking.
Thanks for the clear, step by step explanation Arthur. If one doesn't have a fid then a marlin spike is a good means of opening up the rope, followed by swift insertion of the strand as the spike is withdrawn.

Thanks Keith, yes I'm sure that would work fine if there's no Swedish fid to hand.
Do you use the same technique to make a direct rope to chain splice for use with a gypsy windlass? Just build the eye tighter?
