    Had the exact same problems on my 94 743B Diesel this weekend. It started stalling out, I could prime it and it would run for a few minutes and stall. I threw in a 12v fuel pump I had sitting around and it ran good for another day. After sitting at idle facing down a hill for about 15 min I cam back out and it died a couple minutes later. After limping it home and lifting the cab, I found the fuel tank directly behind the cab, and it was super easy to get to. About 30 minute later I had the tank removed, then I cleaned the fuel pickup screen and check valve, pressure washed the inside of the tank and started putting it back together. An hour later it was refilled and purring like a kitten.
    I still have the electric fuel pump installed and on a manual switch so if I ever need it, I can always flip it on.
    Thanks for the great videos, you pointed me in the right direction without troubleshooting for days.

      Yeah just a month or 2 ago I did my full fuel tank drain and clean so that was the root cause of my issue but keeping the lift pump anyway. Glad it helped!

    I'm glad you said you don't work on this stuff all the time, I use mine for horses at the property and have no diesel experience. This gives me hope. The hope is its just the fuel filter. Thanks for posting. 😁👍💪

    Primer bulbs have a ball check at inlet and outlet to control flow while priming. That's why they draw from inlet when bulb is inflating and push fuel downstream when compressed, but they work best when bulb is oriented vertically with the outlet at the top. Becomes obsolete with lift pump installed.

    Glad I found this on utube. I have a 853 bobcat and having the same problem. The brass bleeder on top of the fuel filter that you can drain broke so I can’t get it bled at all. Thanks.

      The joy of old equipment. I bet you could crack a line loose after the filter to bleed it.

    I know this video is a few years old (and has helped me figure this out) but I had these same issues. Turns out injection pump leaking the fuel pressure into engine oil. Everytime I squeeze primer bulb to get primed. Was losing it thru injection pump. Check your oil and make sure it is not over full, or becoming really runny

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good input!
      I had checked it back then but i am going to check it this week again because that does make sense. Finally I have run enough fuel through it to get the debris out of the tank so been good ever since the lift pump.

    Due to the high price and difficulty of parts for my bobcat 853 I had to adapt some parts. The fuel filter holder was moved upwards to place the filter used in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 310 van, the manual pump (auxiliary) and pre-filter (glass body) of the Mercedes Benz 710 was also adapted, the engine block was adapted, fuel oil filter, air filter, oil cooler or heat exchanger and exhaust I made other parts .....

      I later found there was a way to drain the fuel tank. There was sludge in the bottom. The fix in the video did work but later I really fixed the machine up and found the drain which is probably a better fix.

      One to the grounded body of the machine and the other I found a 12v wire that is 0v key off bit 12v key on. It has a little connector for something in the engine area that was not being used.

    Thinking the electric pump would be better down low and close to the tank. They are designed to push and haven't got much pulling power, This would make the system self priming for when they run it dry.

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, although this pump was working great where it was mounted and getting closer to the tank was a challenge so I'm good with that location. And agreed about self priming as well. Nice setup really.

    Awesome video! Can you post the link of the pump and check valve?

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pump link is in the comments, check valve I am sorry but I don't remember. Although what I later did was find the tank drain under the machine and flush the tank out, then I wouldn't remove the check valve that is on the fuel pick up in the tank so check valve adding won't be necessary. And I did eventually eliminate the primer bulb. See my later video on bobcat 753 partial restore.

    Great video man. I don’t do construction or anything like that. Just bought a 99’ 863 to help clear trees on my property and grade. I’m having the same starvation issues. I put a new lift pump from amazon and the pump runs well off an accessory harness. Only issue is that after a cpl minutes it dies and the primer bulber is sucked flat.
    Anyone have suggestions on what else I should check?

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah there is debris in the tank. In one of the earlier videos I did i found the hose going to the fuel tank as a pick up was getting clogged with debris. I chased the junk in the tank for a long time till I finally got a service manual and found there is a fuel tank drain. I drained it and left the plug out and splashed a few more gallons in to rinse it and it is sweet now.
      There is a plate on the bottom with the bolts, center but toward the back. The left plug drains the chain case oil and the right drains the fuel tank. Look on my channel "bobcat 853 partial restoration" and see it it looks the same.
      Too bad I sold mine!

      @@paulkelley86 If there is no check valve in the tank, what stops the fuel from flowing back to the tank in the hose below the check valve? There is no protection back to the fuel tank.

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ragbearebikegoodlife6693 the way I see it, the check valve being further up in the system should have the same effect. The only way fuel would bleed back into the tank is if there was an air leak. In theory no check valve should work. Even if it bleed back down, the lift pump would prime it quickly. I wasn't sure what the effect would be, if it would need to be bled all the time for example so I went ahead and put in a check valve. It holds. The fuel doesnt drain back to the tank. If I were to have a leaking hose, I think the air would enter and allow fuel to go back to the tank since all of this is on the "suction" side of the fuel system.

    Hi Paul,
    Loved your videos re fuel starvation. I’ve got the same thing with my 753, do you think your chances would be worth a shot on mine?

    • @paulkelley86
      @paulkelley86  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Kearns it seems to be a fairly common thing to get rust in the fuel tanks. Normally I would say to pull the tank and clean it out but the tank on this models is beyond buried, would have to pull the engine and hydraulic pump to access. I would start by making sure it seems to be fuel starvation, if you pumping the primer helps, sounds like it could be suction side fuel hose sucking air in or pump getting tired. Also if it does not hold fuel prime and hard starts, sounds like the fuel check valve in the tank. Or if it loses power the longer you run it, but regains power if you shut it off for a while, sounds like rust clogging the end of the fuel pick up hose in the tank. All of these were wrong with mine, maybe yours will just be an external fuel hose or something easy, guess you won't know till you get in there : -).

      My 753 has fuel starvation issues, but seems tied to the high-pressure pump/injectors overheating. If we pour a bottle of water over it, it fires back up. The bulb has pressure and never collapses - and like the OP, the machine will run great if I give the bulb a squeeze or two - but it's a very temporary fix.
      We've replaced all fuel lines, fuel intake tube, fuel filter (twice), low-pressure pump, muffler/exhaust (they were rusted out) - but still have the same issue, although engine seems to run smoother after the part swaps. I can't find any videos/forums about people replacing the high-pressure pump on a 753 and the guy I use for my Bobcat work believes it to be a major undertaking left to Bobcat or similar engine shop. Thinking of trying this - figure it can't hurt at this point.
