I've had my 853 since 1994. It's only needed a few repairs over the years but I ran a tree nursery and it didn't have to do road work or any other job that would kill it. I like the hand and foot controls much more than the joystick style of the modern machines, particularly when rolling and curling a bucket full of dirt. No way this machine only weights 1700 pounds. That's the lift capacity. The machine weighs 6700 pounds. A very nice beefy feel. Overall a bit expensive for repairs but probably no more than other skid steers.
Your struggle on removing a muffler and the engine are the reason I believe that all Bobcat engineers should be fired or made to work on the equipment they design for at least 3 years.
The lower part of the block is the crank case. The crank case in this engines just like other small diesel engines are a separate component. Great video!
My old job we had a Case skid loader that had an old Thermo King refer engine retrofit into it. That thing was sketchy as hell, at idle it would try to drive forward at a decent clip. And it always had a dead battery. So you'd have to have the battery compartment open (under your feet) with the jump starter hooked up, hit the key until it started, and immediately get your hands on the controls and pull them back to keep from moving so you didn't run over the battery charger 🤣 the good ol days
Joysticks don't have any feel to them whereas the Bobcat controls really get the operator in touch with the machine because they are direct mechanical controls over high pressure hydraulics. But then again I came up running Bobcat so I guess its what you get used to
@@NotSureJoeBauers them bobcat controls, are like twin sticks in an old ass big truck, its cool they did that... but no longer practical. If you got one, use it as long as you can, but that's old technology, And it's gone for a reason.
Rod bearings and main bearings while the engine is out. Bad main bearings make the crankshaft move in a elliptical motion therefore stretching the seal.
I'm having a intermittent starting problem with my mustang 940 E 1997 Starts up sometimes, not all the times. interlock problem. Changed ignition, relays, time delay. Haven't changed any wiring harnesses yet. Any thoughts? Bob cat have problems similar?
It turned out to look very nice great job on it. It’s comforting to know that there are people still out there that repair their equipment instead of getting new. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
I had a 753 bobcat, fyi it is way easier to pull the motor and pump out as a unit. You can actually just slide it out onto a pallet, can have it out in about an hour, also easier reassemble the engine to the bellhousing outside of the machine.
I owned a 853 no way that 1700 weight was right, mine was closer to 6850. I bought mine on the cheap too, the fuel pick up broke off under the motor so it wouldn't run. Drilled a new hole over behind the battery, installed a new pickup tube and lift pump, used it for a while, when sold it had made some great money.
The rated weight is for attachment and load. So if you had 1700 with 300 pound forks, it will lift a 1400 pound load. It may do more, but if if everything is functioning correctly it won't do less. Gross Vehicle Weight is what you are thinking of, or Max Gross Vehicle Weight Rating which would the maximum it can safely weigh with machine, attachments, and load.
A little tip: If you pull the plastic spray nozzle/head off a can of the O'Reilly engine degreaser and put it on the oven cleaner can..it will spray/pattern better.
Bobcats are the little champions of the earthmoving world, they punch so far above their weight.. you can flatten a house with it, yet its the size of a hatch back.
I’m sad the back up light didn’t get fixed. Cool little resto project. Good work boys. Your friend reminds me of my friend .....Oakland As pitcher Chris Basset.
Made the right call pulling just the engine. That 853 appears to be like mine where the drive pumps are what’s called reverse ported meaning the drive hoses for the right side of the machine come off of the rear of the pump and the left side comes off the front of the pump. It’s an absolute pain trying to swing an 1-5/8” wrench in that tight spot between the engine and the drive pumps trying to disconnect the right side hoses so that you can pull the pumps and engine together. I had my drive pumps and motors rebuilt two years ago.
Belt drive to the pump and a hidden oil cooler fan assembly!!! Sold to a Korean company years ago. I had a 500. Sipped gas and work one hour fix four work 1 fix 4.

Roughly how many spray cans of each colour did you use? They are super expensive over here in the UK, so even though they are good, might be a lot cheaper for me to get the spray gun out. Nice video by the way
Definitely came out nicely, Still odd that an 800 series machine with 12 more hp and weights 1200lbs more has the same operating and tipping capacities that the 7753 I'm rebuilding now does.
You guys really should have checked the main bearings in that sucker, in my experience if BOTH the front and rear crank seals are leaking that means the bearings are worn enough the crank has dropped a few thousandths, and that’s all it takes to wipe out a seal in no time.
I'm a 62 year old 100 percent rated U.S. Navy disabled vet. I have always wanted a bobcat but they are just a little out of my price range. I live in western PA, how much are you asking for it? It would work great for me as a over powered wheelchair, LOL
You should lock those arms when u lift the bucket like that. My mechanic died when he was crushed in between the bucket and body of the machine while working on one of my machines in 2019.. the hydraulics lost pressure some how and came down ...
Speaking of lifting that machine with your excavator... I know you can. I have flown 853s in all kinds of positions. Lifted them to the second and third floor with a little 6000 lb Cat telehandler. Dropped them down in 15 foot deep holes with a little 321 Cat excavator. I've carried them all over job sites to fuel them up. Way faster to carry it than drive it. In case you ever need to, put one fork between the wheels and one fork behind the rear wheel. Perfect balance. Now, we need to see you toss one because I've never done that. lol
