Its really sad and sickening that fact that to this day Julia is being called the werewolf woman, or the "ugliest woman that has ever existed", by youtubers that "cover" her history, is nice to see for a change a respectful and understanding perspective of her story ❤

@@LM-ix7pk Exactly!! I've videos of people with Julia's condition and they look like normal humans (with the exception of the amount of hair on their body). The drawings made her face look like an ape which I highly doubt was the case.
I completely agree- it was something she couldn’t control and she was exploited for it😢
@@meIatonin Unfortunately she didn't just suffer from hypertrichosis, but also had other diseases and conditioned that deformed her face - prominent brow, large ears & nose, protruding mouth - which is what caused her "gorrila-like" appearance more than just having excessive body & facial hair. Some of the drawings from her time further exaggerated these traits but if you look at some of the photos of her, others were pretty close.
The child never got to be buried though. It's so sad.
KittyFAN13 i keep thinking about him 😭 his mother FINALLY got the respectful burial she deserved, but his remains were thrown in a field & left for animals to destroy. I wish someone had gone out to look for SOMETHING left of the little one, at least to keep with his mother’s body until she was buried.

This is going to sound, absolutely horrible, but in a way he did......... He loved that she made him money, and he made him money for being herself, so in messed up way he loved her for her.
@Rusty Kinks A love doesn't have to be kind. Our society has taught us this time and time again. He loved her not as a wife, or a friend, but as an object. His love for her as this object he saw her as was brought on by the way she was. He loved this "object" for being itself, because it made him money of which he loved more. So yes, he loved the benefits, but as I see it, he could've easily found another woman, as he did, with the same condition to exploit, once he did, he could've given her up, but he didn't, because he loved the thought of her bringing in the money.

I just wanna see Julia's dress's and journals. I wanna see how she viewed the world. They really did her wrong for some fecking hair problem and her poor baby didn't deserve that neither.
Do you know if she kept journals, or if any of them survived to this day if she did? I'd like to read them too, if they exist!

She probably did sound amazing! And it's tragic because the people back then probably didn't give a shit about her singing and more about the way she looked 😭. Even doubling tragic what happened to her baby boy and not being buried with her, instead he was tossed in a field and eaten by critters 😖.

This is one of the most painful histories of a person I ever learned about. She was a highly intelligent woman, and just wanted to be loved. Instead, she was exploited her entire life.

It was uncanny how many doctors were needed to handle the influx of this illness once the women began treatment. Some poor women's hysteria cases were so sever that they were prescribed treatment 5 times a week. Some doctors even worked on weekends. When the treatment devices reduced in size and became portable, doctors could make house calls.

It would have been so easy for you to treat this story - Julia's story - as a curiosity much like she was made out to be by the people who exploited her. I'm glad you chose not to, and instead remained respectful and even seemed truly upset by how she was treated. I had never heard of her or you before today, and I don't normally watch videos related to death (I'm easily scared). But I'm glad I learnt of her story, and glad that I learnt it from someone who treated it with the compassion that she deserved to have while she lived. Thank you.

I just saw a photo of Julia and her adorable baby. It made my heart ache. He looks like any precious newborn baby. They deserved so much better. I'm so glad they were finally laid to rest.

At various times in history, performing in shows was the only way for lower-class 'freaks' to make a living. Depending on their physical issues, some could be unable to do heavy labor and lacked the education for other employment (assuming anybody would hire them); some families literally couldn't afford to have non-working members aside from very young children; society shunned them, cutting off other support; they weren't sought as spouses -- that sort of thing. But a traveling show gave them employment, housing, and the company of people who wouldn't reject them. It sucked, but it was better than begging and hoping not to be robbed.
For Julia, though, her decision to perform rather than go home was predetermined by her childhood as a glorified dancing monkey for a jerk who did not see her as human. People had controlled her almost from birth: she didn't have the strength to resist. Her intelligence and ability were wasted.
I agree to some extent, but occasionally, close knit villages can become used to people with differences and become strangely accepting. I doubt that would have happened in her home village, but if she'd had the financial capability (which I know she didn't) to immigrate somewhere she could be safer from superstition she may have been ostracized less. I fear that no matter where she was, she would have been taken advantage of and feared.

I remember when they finally brought her back here, a lot of people still don't know who she is but others were waiting for her return and burial. She had a religious service and all 💖 finally a burial with dignity.
Next time I go to Mexico, I’d love to plan to visit her burial place, lay flowers, and pay my respects. I am glad she was finally granted the dignity in death that she was never afforded in life.

Back in 2017 there was an immersive play about Julia Pastrana set in the dark at the Melbourne Fringe Festival that I went to see (read: listen and touch and smell and taste) which is where I learnt her story. They treated her memory with respect and allowed us as audience members to connect with her while we could not see her. At the end they had a photo of her and a shrine set up for us to place flowers on and it was really beautiful
this is really wonderful, I love that the artist had the idea to make it an immersive play about her life, especially because SO MUCH of her life was based on her appearance. Immersive plays are fascinating to me and she is such a little known individual who deserves to BE known for her incredible strength and dignity, as well as her child. So awesome.

There was a show on hbo in the early 80s that included Julia and as a kid I was so scared of her that it caused a life long interest. As I got older, I understood the real monsters in her story. Finally she’s laid to rest.

i’m crying. i’m so happy she got the dignity and respect she deserved in the end, even though she never knew that dignity and respect in life + had no idea 156 years later people would be advocating for her.
So sad.... i truly believe that she’s beautiful, her body hair is gorgeous and she pulled it off beautifully. It’s so heartbreaking how awful she’d been treated before AND after her death. I’m glad she’s now resting in peace.

Unrelated to video, but I have to thank you. My mother just died, and she was dead for about a month before she was found. Everyone tried to discourage me from seeing her one last time, but I was set on seeing her. I don't regret it at all. I kind of wish I took more time actually. But thank you for helping me have the strength to do that, and to feel confident in going into the funeral home.

I'm from Culiacán in Sinaloa, a city that is really close to Julia's birthplace, I'm glad you talked abt her and her life, she deserved better. Back in 2013 when she was brought back to be buried, she recieved lots of flowers and love from everyone. It's very sad that her child couldn't make it with her. Greetings from México! powermezzo I know how you feel, I became obsessed with true crime, crime scene clean up and body farm type documentaries when I was 15 after the murder of my uncle. Knowing the inns and outs of death made it easier to process such a difficult and confusing time.

I had a similar experience to other people in this thread. I'm sure everyone reacts differently, but I personally get more scared of what I don't know.
There's a pose in yoga called "dead body pose", when I was mourning my grandfather I would use that time to think about his body. It gave me some time to contemplate something that I was sad about. You can't run away from feelings, you need to give yourself an appropriate and safe time to feel them.
Would you consider doing a video on the lives & corpses of African women placed in human zoos? I always wondered what happened to them after they passed & I think the education would be enlightening to everyone!

Julia Pastrana possessed an eerie beauty. So unique when compared to most of us.
It is a wonderful thing that these so-called "freak shows" were done away with.
How much greater it would have been had these 'shows' never existed at all.
I remember we had a paperback book in our family library with a title something like "Human Freaks and Oddities." Julia Pastrana was in it, as well as Eng & Chang, Violet & Daisy Hilton, Myrtle Corbin, The Tocci Brothers, Tom Thumb, and others. Although none of their lives would have been easy, I find it very sad that their uniqueness was perceived as something odd and macabre. Most spent their lives trying to fit in, when they were clearly born to stand out. Life has taught me not to judge a book by its cover. I would have missed out on some of the very best folks in my life if I had!

Very similar to Joseph Merrick (the elephant man) He did finally find dignity being cared for by Dr. Frederick Treves. Many famous people came to see him in a respectful and personable way. His ending was sad when he decided to sleep like a normal person, knowing he would suffocate if he did so. 😪
The story of the Elephant Man is more nuanced. Dr. Treves did not want to care for Joseph, feeling his condition too extreme for the hospital facilities. Joesph Merrick actually wanted to return to the Fairs where could make money. He knew his body would end up on display after his death and he may have believed that there was nothing left for him. Dr. Treves profited off the case of The Elephant Man, even writing memoirs; where could not even remember his name. He repeatedly refers to him as John, not Joesph. The bones of Joseph Merrick are still kept in the Royal British Hospital.
This is the first I've heard of Julia Pastrana and she was put through so much injustice even after death! Thank you for sharing her tale in such a respectful way.

it is really sad. she has only been shown respect after almost 200 years of being dead, and after a decade of people fighting on her behalf. I just hope that somehow she knows that people are finally treating her as a human being. I know it's a lot to hope for but it only seems right

Yeah, it seems doctors in the 1800s were mostly just guys who got the education to know what the human body looked like inside but were pretty free to just make up and promote whatever they felt like as if it was hard science. That's how Freud and his ilk got so well-known.

Being multiply disabled myself (not sure if Julia would call herself that) I often look into people in the past labeled as "freaks" to know more about their lives and to make sure their stories are being told. I first read about Julia Pastrana 30 years ago. At the time, her corpse was “lost.” I was so heartened in 2013 when they brought her remains home to Sinaloa, where she should have stayed. Thank you for being respectful to her memory and calling out the people who abused her in life and in death. May she rest easy.
