There's an incredible book about the Mirabal sisters called "In the time of the butterflies" written by Julia Alvarez. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in their story
I haven't listened to the english version, but I listened to the spanish audiobook for a final paper and it is SO good. Just... have tissues. Prepare the people you live with that you won't shut up talking about it for a month at least.

The oldest sister was 35 and the youngest sister was 25. They left behind 6 children who were raised by Dede. All around this was a tragedy.

壁の花Jarline It’s amazing to me to see such fearless women throughout history. Any culture, and country, seek and you shall find some badass women, standing up for what’s right. I’d never heard of these particular women until this video, and, although Caitlin is great at softening the blow, it still brought me to tears. I can’t imagine what they went through, and I hope they have some way of knowing that they succeeded.

And on a somewhat lighter note, I have a good story for you. My husband always joked about being late for his own funeral. I told my son that not only did he not show up, but that he was in the back in refrigitation, he was just chillin, lol

I am so glad that he was able to immigrate here and that because of it, we have a little more Dominican greatness here as a part of it 🇩🇴🇺🇸 We are definitely better for THAT without a doubt!!!!! Yeah. Im happy for your family. I can just imagine my family in that situation. And I wonder about the people who might have dressed their daughters like boys, and made them look ugly on purpose.
My dad would've walked me to school, and dress like a boy, with my school uniform in a backpack to change into at school and change back on the walk back.

I remember reading about the Mirabal sisters in ‘In the time of the butterflies’ in high school and i remember it was so heartwrenching to read about how women were treated under the patriarchy. As a guy, story really opened my eyes to the value of feminism especially knowing that their self-determination and voice empowers me as well. Thanks for sharing that story!

My dad is from dominican republic and was a kid when the trujillo dictatorship was nearing it's end, i grew up hearing stories about the mirabal sisters and, being a triplet myself it was kinda of cool and inspiring hearing how these 3 women sacrificed their lives and fought for freedom.
I'd love another video like this! ESpecially about the Viking warrior skeletons that everyone thought were male, and turned out to be female.

Some of those Norse women were fighters; however, I believe that some of them may have been buried with weapons because they earned political power, status & great respect through wise governance of their tribe. They may not have all been battlefield warriors per se.
(Think of Queen Margaret of Anjou, consort to Henry VI of England, and of Queen Elizabeth I.)
I am a retired soldier myself, and even now only a very few women are able, or want, to be infantrymen. I certainly know how to shoot and maintain my assigned weapons, and the basics of survival on the battlefield, but that is not how I served in our country’s Army for 30 years.
@@Tina06019 Fair enough! Not all women can be fighters. Not all men can either!! But i have a feeling there were more than has been thought. Scandinavian women are a different breed. Tougher and built bigger than we think of women in the US and most of the world. I have Norse blood and am 6' having worked in construction for 30 years. Not many women can do that work and i saw more than a handful of men try and give up too. Stands to reason that goes for war also.
My husband was in the US Army for 24 yrs and saw a few women that could, but also a few try and couldn't. He always treated them the same. Once the uniform goes all.... Everyone is green. Period!
Tina But plenty of women from all over the world have a long history of fighting in wars. You have ladies from African tribes, Celts and Nords, Native American tribes, women from all over Asia... Just because you don’t know many women who served, does not mean they do not exist. I’ve never experienced many things, but dismissing them as fake or rare based on anecdotal evidence is illogical. Knowing the Celts, in a similar culture and timeline, had women who fought, I would be quicker to assume the women buried with the shields and swords fought than to assume otherwise.

“In the Time of the Butterflies” is such a beautiful book about the Mirabal sisters (and much better than the movie). They became the Los Mariposas and really started a political movement against El Jefe Trujillo causing his people -and army-to pull a “Praetorian Guard.”

I'm a dominican 23 year old woman and I can't help crying watching you narrate my history, mirabal sisters are such an iconic piece of our lives, I went once to their museum and it is such a peacefull place, Even after all the bad things trujillo did to their family, to my country, they are light, inspiration, and culture to many other women. Interesting video! My grandma lived in the DR during Trujillo’s reign and she would tell me stories of seeing roses on young girl’s doorstep in her village and never seeing them again
coolgirl3890 My father is from Havana, and Trujillo is easily up there with Fidél re: atrocities committed against his own people. It was men who were never seen again, though, including my great uncles. Castro wanted more teenagers for the army, and dad was the right age. His family fled in 1965.
Girls would hide in closets, I’ve heard stories that women would hide inside of ovens to avoid seeing trujillo, cuz if he liked you you were basically dead. My Grandma was a part of the movimiento 14 de Junio (the one that took him down)

I only found your channel in the past month. Without making the macabre creepier, you deliver information that is knowledgeable and enjoyable. The funeral industry is not openly discussed in the Bible Belt of Oklahoma so learning about it from your videos is fascinating and I don’t feel guilty around my very Southern Baptist friends and family. Your historical videos are even better. You are obviously well prepared for your presentations and should get a golden mortician award for your acting ability. Keep making these great videos! Thanks!
