      Forget that. The problems with solidified joints, acres of adipose tissue, and fungal infection are much, much worse...especially if you are trying to dissect out the deep and superfical palmar arches of the hand, or if the tendons of the ankle have turned to biltong before you can visualize the tarsal tunnel. Don't get me started on the shock it elicits when a careless lab tech has not properly secured the top of the cranium back in place after removing the brain, and somebody inadvertently bumps the head, sending the top of the calvaria crashing to the floor with the sound of several empty coconut shells knocking together.... these are REAL cadaver problems ;-)

    Rosalia has always intrigued and saddened me greatly. Such a sad life and one that was all too common at the time to end so short. Its hard to watch any of these with kids but I'm so fascinated by the topic. There is also a Inuit baby that is well preserved and looking into its eyeless face is so heartbreaking.

      Is the Inuit baby you mention the one that was on the cover of National Geographic many years ago? Maybe it's been featured elsewhere in the meantime, butt hat's where I saw it, and yes, it is heartbreaking. The child looks as if it could look at you and coo.

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Aiswarya Venugopal you have to understand their belief system. That was the only way for the mother and child to be together in the afterlife. Yes, I think the child should have been killed first, but death is death, and one can only hope the weight of the soil suffocated it quickly.
      As for killing it ahead of time, there was no real way to do that quickly and effectively back then, so it would have had to have its neck broken, or be smothered, or something else where there is still awareness for awhile as they die, so why would that be any better?
      Edited to add... aside from bashing its head in, that is, and there may have been a reason that, in their belief system, that would also have been unacceptable.

    • @WinLindsay_CushingContent
      @WinLindsay_CushingContent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I just Googled the Inuit baby... He is so cute, but of course it is very upsetting to know that he was likely buried alive with his mother, after her death, as a kindness, because starvation would be longer and more painful.

      Win Xx

    When I was about 8yo, my family took a trip to Sicily. My parents knew I was fascinated with Egyptian mummies, and so thinking they were doing me a great favor, they told me we were going to "a museum."
    It was the capuchin catacombs.
    After the shock & trauma faded, gratitude set in; it truly is one of the most remarkable, unique places to visit on Earth! Now, as an adult, going back is a one of the top spots on my personal bucket list.
    (Still, I wouldn't recommend taking your young children there. Especially without a prior warning.)

I googled my own name under images just to see what pictures people were rudely posting with no warning and I came across a police sketch of a Jane Doe who looked JUST LIKE ME at age forty seven BUT the body had been found and sketch made the year I was born!!! No one ever stepped forward to identify her or claim her remains. I wondered... Would they let ME claim her and buy her a proper burial lot but I'm sure she's long since been lost in an unmarked pauper's grave. So sad and SOOOO FREAKING CREEPY. My skin still crawls. Her hair was same color, same length and EXACT SAME way I wear my hair up in a band every day and it was CERTAINLY my face, my height and weight and age. WHO WAS SHE?????? I had the pleasure to "meet" little Rosalia a couple years ago, as the Catacombes Dei Cappuccini was on my bucket list (no pun intended). Lauren and I made our way through the back streets of Palermo, enjoying many diversions along the way. To her credit, she made it as far into the underground as the first intersection, when she said: "I've gotta get outta here". It wasn't so much the high hanging mummies on the walls, but rather the stacks of windowed caskets below them lining the corridors. I was on my own to peruse the well kept hallways of this incredible place. I urge anyone to add this to your must visit list.

      Because it's not only extremely expensive and dangerous to do because of all the chemicals that would have to be used, but also, there are other ways to see and preserve your loved ones after they've died. Way back when, this was the only way to see them because people didn't have cameras readily available in an instant.

    They actually had to put Rosalia into a new casket because her old one became worthless in preserving her..

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      D G No, they built a hermetic vessel to hold the entire casket. The casket itself has never been opened, never mind replaced!

    • @winterweib
      @winterweib 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      @@tookitogo The glass lid had a cracking. So Rosalia started to decompose.
      But since the Monks promised her father never allow anybody to disturb her slumber, they did not allow Signore Pirombino and Albert Zink ( who was NOT mentioned here! Though he is Pirombino's chief and in fact was the one who cared for Rosalia's body!) to take her out of the casket for preservation. Not for the x-rays, too, by the way.
      So they took that new glass lid over the old, cracked one away, wiped away the humidity and the mold, then gassed it for destroying the bacterias, etc, and THEN put it into the new coffin. All stuff, the old casket, etc.
      There is an empty bottle under Rosalia's pillow. They think there was something inside, a fluid or so which gassed into the coffin while/after the embalming.
      But I think he, Salafia, just took it to put pillow and head higher for a better display.
      He was not happy with the result after ending the embalming and making the 'bed', thought '... it could look better.... hm....what *could* I take to put under her head...-hm hm hm... uuuum... *HEY!* ' (loud:)" Does anybody still need that bottle over there?"

    Caitlin, I am eleven and have been watching you for about a year. So I was around ten when I started watching you. But to say the least, I got some issues, and I am too young to understand everything you're saying and love it. I used to be absolutely afraid of death because of my OCD and anxiety issues. Since watching you I have, you could say calmed about death. Now I am considering going to mortuary school. And I'd like to thank you! I am currently going to an advanced school and the anxiety of everything even gets me there. I feel pressured to be great because I go a school like that and that is definitely apart of the anxiety. To have this fear of death lifted with your death positive videos is great and helpful in a way. Keep on doing what your doing!

It's not that big a deal. _~shrug~_

Ask a Mortician??? What??? Has TH-cam completely changed their system for recommendations? So as it kept appearing there i figured i HAD to see what this crazy sounding "goth" channel was. Three days later i have watched at least 50 of your videos, purchased your audiobook, watched your TED talk and posted about you on social media. I learned about her from a book when I was a kid. Didn’t know the location, then saw her on a end-of-school trip when I was 18. I don’t want to say it was amazing because, well, you’re walking in between dozens of someone’s ancestors, but it was pretty special.

    Caitlin, enjoyed the video as always. This seems to be best case scenario video, how about a video on worst case scenario for example, when things went horribly wrong. What's your gut feeling, Rosalia has been that way for 96 years, will she still look the same say in another 40 years?

      M. Utley well, this show doesn't require my constant attention and I can just listen. But yes, data entry for 9 hours in a cube does give me time to listen to books music and ask a mortician lol.
