Great. I'm getting my first tutorial classes from you & I am getting so much useful information. Most easy way to learn, wonderful as you elaborate on techniques and visualizing the light direction, thank you... I have been drawing by pure instinct and love of art. Thank you Wei, most grateful.
As a fashion designing student our first basic assignment is to to draw 3D perspective shapes and this is so much helpfull THANK YOU SO MUCHH . I will surely pass😁😁😁
Best video ever. Thank you sharing the angle information with us. most will tell you how to shade a cube, but not why certain sides are brighter than others. Thankk youu so much!
For me it's the opposite. The more I move my whole hand while I'm trying to draw a line, the more I screw it up. The better I keep my hand still when I'm making a line, the better it turns out for me
Thank you so much for this video (the whole series infact). I have learnt so much and the way you explain the lighting and shadow effect is super helpful. Thank you!
Essentially. The planes that are parallel to the light source receive no light, while planes that are perpendicular (90 degree angle) receive the most light. At least, this is my understanding of the rule.
I appreciate your effort very much. I think your explanations are lucid and exact. I especially like two characteristics of the video: 1. no music; 2. actual time, not speeded-up time. Watching the video was very much like having a tutor show the lesson. Thank you.
Thank you so much Wei! I've been going through tons of books and tutorials for beginners but you're by far the most exhaustive yet fun and pedagogic tutor I've found. Finally learning to draw is inspiring again! =)
hello ? First, thanks for the video sir but i have a question to make, when i tried to shade the cube, i didn't look as smooth as yours, instead it looked kinda dirty and the cube didn''t seem to come out in 3d. Please help SOS
This just gets way more fun when you know hot it works. You literally explained it better in 10 minutes, than my arts teacher in 5 hours. "Just use common sense" she said. Then she proceeded to show random and weird looking stuff without explanation. You just explaned it. We will write an exam on this tomorrow and you just saved my butt. Thanks.
You are the best teacher I have found on TH-cam. Thank you for freely sharing your knowledge as any true artist should be doing. Knowledge is power. Teaching your knowledge to others continues the knowledge.
Good grief. Was that your tummy growling earlier? Any-who, in three months I've come a long way in my capability because of you. I couldn't draw a convincing stick figure not too long ago. I can convincingly get across the human form on paper, now. Thank you.
+Anxiolytic Haha, no, it's the wire from the microphone. I must have kept scrapping it with my body against the table. Yeah, sorry about that. I'll fix that next time around. I'm glad you've found my videos to be helpful. Just trying to share what I know.
Great video and very useful info. However there's one question I can't find the answer to. Where the faces meet everyone draws a line. However in real life there is no line. How does one figure out the transition at the edge ? Should you just have clean values to start out with and gradually shade to the precise edge or is there a line where the light transitions. All my attempts seem to give a soft look.
It's all about seeing the values. Use your light lines just for reference only, then shade from there. You shouldn't see your lines after you've finished shading. If you can still see the lines, that means it's too dark, obviously.
I seem to be the only one confused so i must be missing something but judging from where the light source is coming from, why is the top of the cube fairly dark when surely with the light source in that position, light wouldn't be prevented from hitting the top of the cube at all? hopefully someone can explain because i'm really confused
question: why do some cubes have the highlights on the edges? is the shape's edges less defined in order to get that highlight effect? or do all cubes show highlight edges?
Unless it's perfectly sharp, then there wouldn't be a high, but since most objects are not perfectly sharp on the end, you're basically seeing the rounded corner. Small as it is, it'll catch some highlights.
Hi,I have a hard time to draw shadow. When I draw light line to find "region of shadow." The line from different vertex doesn't come together. And also when I draw shaw of faces of cube, it is not vivid
Very helpful. I feel like you left out 2 points in the construction of the shadow around 10:30 ish. The left side of the front face. That being said it looks close enough.
Thanks, Wei, very useful video, but I am just wondering why the larger angle will reflect less light, I know this is a bit more like a physics question.
Thank you so much, been trying to find a patient teacher. Your voice and techniques make this seem manageable cant wait try them out, feeling super artistic again.
I can't even draw the cube
me too so hard
Simply Superb Explanation, Thanks
wow!!thank you so much !!this is wonderful skill!
“Now it looks like your cube is actually sitting there.”
Me:*Looks down* my cube looks like it got ran over......
😂🤣
Instablaster...
The shadow of my cube looks like it took some drugs before showing up to work 😬
Great.

+tinktwiceman Yeah, just think of angle that the light hits any surface, that should give you an idea of how bright it'll be.
can we apply it to all objects or just for.cube, .pl advise
For me it's the opposite. The more I move my whole hand while I'm trying to draw a line, the more I screw it up. The better I keep my hand still when I'm making a line, the better it turns out for me
It takes practice that's all! for longer lines drawing from the shoulder is infinitely better :)

What u have shown in the picture is totally diff. ......kindly correct your way of explaining

Thanks for watching. I'm glad it's useful.
I learned more in this video than my drawing 1 college class.

Awesome video!! Thank youu Wei! You considered my request and did a great job :) You're an awesome teacher!
+tinktwiceman Thanks for all your comments=).
How do you draw the cube so well I tried to draw the cube and it took me about 5 to 10 times XD
wenhu Yu you just gotta keep trying and one day you’ll be able to do it
He used his whole arm
I havent tried that yet so... let's give it a try
practice makes perfect, i think
Different Thumbnail deferent Cube
Why are you. making us Fool🥺
i’m confused so if the angle is bigger that’s going to be the darkest part?

+rrOCKKING1 Thanks, more coming.

Excellent. Thanks for the tips on drawing straight lines and finding the shadow.

It's mostly your hand control. The more you draw, the more hand control you'll get. It takes time.
Very helpful. Thanks

Thank you so much for this video ! I am really enjoying trying to understand how light hits surfaces and you have really helped me !!!
thank you, I'm applying for an art school and your tutorials help a whole lot
That's awesome!
Great tutorial. I feel like after 9 videos I am FINALLY getting the shading of the cast shadow :)
ok even i had't heard of shadow obstructing reflected light, thanks

The light source it not directly on top, it's almost at a 45 degree angle to the top plane.

I'm sorry what I was asking is there a similar formula for cylinder shapes
+Mary Nestoros Mary, have you seen my other videos?
I always had trouble with putting shades on my drawing, but i feel that your advice may come in handy in getting a grasp on mastering how to shade.
+Xavier Martinez Good luck Xavier.
do we need a certain type of shading pencil?
I am just learning how to draw and I think he does a great job explaining and teaching..

what was the scream at 16.49
.beautiful work ! can you tell me what coal colors used in your painting type
because I wanted to buy some coal colors. thanks
When you do quite precise shading like this, do you always have construction lines?
How do I get that shadow on other things that aren't shaped like a cube???
Excellent experience 🎉
Interesting. I didn't know there was so much involved in creating shading and cast shadows.
Fantastic tips there mate! Love the bounce light accounting for the ground shadow..
I want to learn how to shade, but my cube doesn't look like a cube at all 😥
Can you do a face reveal
I love your art work sir
Thank you so much 😀
This was really helpful Sir. Wei thank you!
Came late to the party. Very valuable content. Thanks!
This video teach me more than 10 years of learning art
Thanks sir ❤❤
Once he started talking about light and angles, I got lost. That's not something I just envision, I have to see it infront of me.
yea i’m confused , it looks like all 90 degrees to me
No angles please.
Thanks for showing how the light goes on the cube 😁👌🏻
