I did your square and cylinder exercises about half a year ago and then I tried doing them again today and they look way better then they did half a year ago. Thanks for the vids, they're often my go to when I feel like doing an exercise :)
You are a great teacher! I have taken two drawing classes and the second was on perspective and light source. I left class and went home totally confused. Your drawings and explanations have cleared all that up. Thank you.
Is it accurate to say that shading with graphite is a matter of various cross hatching strokes over the area? Just trying to contrast it to shading with pen. Great stuff as always.
I have a question: from the angle that we're viewing the cylinder, the darkest part is that line at the center. I might have missed it, but how is it that as we move to the right the cylinder gets lighter? Should it not get darker and darker as we move to the right?
+enigma trece Once you have some drawing, you can always show it to me on my facebook page... facebook.com/artofwei hope to see you there and thanks for all your comments.
+CornTha Corn It wouldn't be completely black because there is usually some bounce light. In this case, even if it were in a dark room, their would still be bounce light from the table. Glad you are analyzing this.
Hm ok, think i have to put this in real live. I guess you are right, just looks a bit strange to me :p Just started out on drawing and your videos help a lot. Keep up the good work. :)
Thank youuu Wei!! Great video as always!! Will you do a sphere and cone as well? That would complete the series :) Love these videos. Keep up the great work.
+tinktwiceman Haha, yeah, that's what I'm thinking about too. Definitely the sphere. The cone, well, it's really the same as cylinder, just squeeze everything you see at the top of the cylinder=).
Art of Wei Nicee!! :) I'm excited for the sphere video.. That's true, cylinder is very similar to the cone. Thank you once again for these great videos.
Hi Wei, Im new to your channel. I really like your systemic approach to shading major figures. Is there a book you would recommend that follows the same methodology on shading? Big thanks for your time.

There are great man, any chance you can do some stuff about a sphere? Also, i've been meaning to ask, if I sent you an image of something I wasn't able to draw would you be willing to send me some pro-tips about what I'm doing wrong ? :)
Art of Wei Awesome thanks alot man :). I'll be sure to send you the pic in another hour. I'll also make sure to like your Facebook page as well. I hope you don't mind, me doing that cause I really want to become better at drawing and I'm willing to take all the help I can get.

This is the best channel in TH-cam , first time I did draw 3D shapes
And they are looking super duper realistic
Handy tip: If you need a non visual reference for the darkest point it is 90 degrees from the light source.
thanks for the tip, but why does the core shadow not get any reflected light ?

HOW ITS EASY I DONE IT AND IT WORKED

I love the way you explained the light from the top view. Great stuff! Love it!
+tinktwiceman Thanks again tinktwiceman.
great teacher,very particular.THANKS!
Very instructive lesson. Thank you.
Thank you Wei
I love how you explain light and shadow...the analytical side of me needs your information! thanks!
Thank you for the inspiration and great content.
Thanks for being here.
The one you circled looks just like a trashcan in a streetlight :) Really interesting!
=)
Thank you for the tutorial! Really helpful!

+Eesoteric43 Yeah, basically, but you also have the strength of your strokes with the pencil to consider. Lots of variations with pencil.
This helped me a lot ty
How did you determine where to draw the base of the light stand. It's not parallel to the bottom of the cylinder, it looks to be a little lower.
I have a question:
from the angle that we're viewing the cylinder, the darkest part is that line at the center. I might have missed it, but how is it that as we move to the right the cylinder gets lighter?
Should it not get darker and darker as we move to the right?
Reflected light is making the rear of it not as dark is how Wei described it - from memory.
That’s what I thought!!
Wao.
Thank you so much Wei, now I have a productive way to spend my idle time, enjoying and trying out all I'm learning.
+enigma trece Once you have some drawing, you can always show it to me on my facebook page... facebook.com/artofwei
hope to see you there and thanks for all your comments.
You explained it very well. but if there is such a dark shadow behind the cylinder shouldnt be the whole cylinder be dark at the back ?
+CornTha Corn It wouldn't be completely black because there is usually some bounce light. In this case, even if it were in a dark room, their would still be bounce light from the table. Glad you are analyzing this.

Keep in mind though that good contrast sometimes makes for more interesting drawing than super realism. That's where the 'art' comes in.
Great video again!

+Robin Kuiper The Steadtler, yeah, they're very good quality.

can you explain how do you shade if the light source is in front of the cylinder or to the north of it at an angle it seems so complex to me?

Could you make tutorials on how to light reflects on pearl and glass objects?
+jieyi liang My next video will be on shading a sphere which is somewhat similar.
