Hey, I have my art high school entrance exam tomorrow. I watched many videos of others drawing still life and learning the shades and tones as much as I could, even after 4 years of learning art in middle school. This art high school will pick out 16 students based on the exam, to teach them further. If I get into this high school, I will be extremely happy, and I am confident I will.. I know I can do it. I will be moving out and living with my brother in college in another city where this school is. Please guys, wish me the biggest luck on the exam, and thank you Jess and many others for helping me learn more and improving me. I promise, I will make it!
This single video in itself is so informative, as a beginner it helps me a lot cause often times when I sit down to practice my shading skills I really don't know HOW to practice. This helps a lot. Thanks a ton.
You've become my favourite art youtuber. I love your simplicity of explaining things. You are not only great artist but also a great teacher! Thanks! This is exactly my level of learning :)
Yay! I get so excited when I see you have new uploads. This is actually something I am learning and it came at the perfect time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for this direct and straightforward video. You gained a subscriber. I want to follow your method of shading if I recall you call it the oval shading method. And I’ll try using the value scale to help me warm up when drawing.
Thank you! I'm currently swatching color pencils and though I've already set up a layout I like, it was only going to be for the darkest and lightest, but this gave me the idea of how to do it to have the 8 in between for each. So awesome!
@@artofjesskarp really helpful video for the beginner like me will definitely be trying out these exercises and see how I improve in my drawings thank you so much for sharing such a detailed video on the shading process loved it lots of love from India Mumbai 🥰❤️😍
i just got a fascination with drawing hands but shading and knowing about highlight and shadows scare me so i'm really glad for this video!!! thank u jess! you are my favorite artist here on youtube💓
I just found this video on recommendation...I have seen so many art channels on utube but i think this is the only one gives so many tips and tricks...thank you for sharing these tips
Changing the distance I hold my pencil from the tip changes a lot, shading is hard for me because I always hold my pencil too close to the tip, this has been very helpful, you’ve got a like!
Your videos have helped me a lot! I tried your tip from one of your videos to draw objects live in which you sketched your mike. This really helped me a lot. Thank you so much Jess please keep making videos ☺️❤️
Great lesson Tho i have an issue with your core shadow on the final work i dont know if its just the camera or its just not there and the bounce light kinda went too sharp it looked like a rim light
Hopefully you see this to answer. In regards to shading the background do you go dark then light as you get further away from the subject which makes it pop? Cause sometimes I jsut shade and I don’t really see a huge difference in mine. But yours is so good
I have no talent in drawing. I'm trying to learn making portraits for therapy. Because I can't draw, I bought a light pad so that I can trace the outlines and shade afterwards. This way at least I can learn to shade and have a finished picture more ore less like the reference! I will try to learn from your videos. Thank you!
Hey Jess !! I admire your art a lot. I'm a beginner and I want to learn to draw professionally. Could you do a series teaching us to draw from scratch. If not, could you point me to where I should start ?
I agree with this comment!! Im a beginner to and I want to start getting serious because I'm gonna go to college in a few years and I want to make art my career path. Thank you for all you do jess! Also great comment Prakriti Prakriti
@Prakriti Prakriti Hey, I'm not Jess but I will suggest some of the fundamentals of art you should learn to improve: -Anatomy & Proportions -Shapes -Values -Perspective -Color & Light -Composition Or you can watch Proko's channel and Mohammed Agbadi's "Bring Your Drawings to Life" video. Thanks Jess. I've only very recently started learning to draw and paint and I absolutely love it! Your tips on shading-practice as a warm up for my drawing have really improved my work. Thanks a lot!
@@artofjesskarp Thank you very much Jess. Your channel is great and your tips and advice are really helpful. I absolutely love your Fruit-Heads series too! It's such an amazing idea and they've all got so much personality, My favourite is the Cherry-Twins! It's such a cool and original idea and brilliantly executed too, they're fantastic!
Hey, thanks for this. I'm a total noob right now and I bought a set. Aren't I supposed to use different weighted pencils depending on the value? I notice you're getting light and dark all with one pencil.
You’re welcome! - technically yes - but it’s great to practice with one 2B or HB to really feel and practice the pressure as a beginner. You really only need one pencil.
@@artofjesskarp it definitely is helpful ❤️❤️ .. In one of ur recent vedios u painted a hibiscus.. it was beautiful and it inspired me to paint some flowers and if found it relaxing painting them... Love you Jess❤️

Yes, the darker values you place next to lighter values will create a higher contrast and make them pop!
