Hey Andy, Love your takes on Tennis, and happy to see you engaged with the sport. This Indian Wells was something special, magic in the air. Alcaraz has captured the hearts of us Fed fans, and I think Rafa's too. He's Fed and Rafa rolled into one and us fan's thank the Tennis gods for working overtime to deliver a talent like this just in time. But you know what, it's his dazzling smile that is so uplifting, and conveys such joy that I love the most about him. I've never seen a player SMILE so often no matter how high the stakes are, and it just uplifts everyone. Case in point the incredible pass against Medvedev ! You're right, Tennis is in a great spot with Alcaraz and Sinner! Hope Tsitsipas finds his mojo soon. Great podcast keep going!
Yes, Carli's smile seems to be a reflection of his fundamental nature. This Fed fan (me) likes Carli, Jani, _and_ Meddy. I hope Med can find a way to add dimension and power to his game so that we can have a new big 3 instead of just a big 2. As it stands, the momentum is shifting away from Med, especially WRT Sinner.
The GOAT is Andy here! Great production, so good with words, analysis never heard like this before. Humor in it, humble as always. The best new podcast and now I'm addicted
Many tennis fans talk about the JCF Carlos coaching but JCF has been there when Carlos has lost big tournaments such as Cincy, USO, the Asian swing etc. JCF has also NOT been there when Carlos has won such as Queens, Miami, etc. 🤷♂️
Juan Carlos was there at all the majors. He was not there at Rio last year, Queens last season and was absent from Miami for a week but got back for the final. He was there at all the other M 1000s and Grand slams.
I have been itching to hear Andy's take on Indian Wells since Carlitos won that final point! Thanks for this awesome youtube/podcast for tennis geeks!!!
I heard what ferrero told Carlos during Sinner match cause on TV in Spain they let us listen it...and I can tell you that Ferrero tells things to him but some minor details that definitely they not gonna make carlos win...at the end is 99% Carlos judgment, I think is most the presence of Ferrero that gives carlos confidence....not forget that Ferrero was in lot of matches with Carlos that he did lost.
💯 Ferrero is coaching 20 year old Carlos about decision making off the court and Carlos is doing the work. This has been reported by Spanish press. This is why ALL players have coaches.
Being fair to Carlos, everyone brings up that Zverev loss because he legitimately did look tactically lost. But the guy was panicking. His game was completely off. He was more worried about making forehands and backhands into the court than he was about tactically adjusting. I’m sure he knew what he had to do and had a game plan, but when you’re just spraying errors all over the place, there’s not much room in your head for tactics.
Would you consider doing separate analysis of Świątek's game? Seems to me like every channel is brushing of her wins, saying one sentence like "she's so good, she's solid, good movement" and then moving on to e.g. 10 min analysis of Sakkari and others... I'd love to know why exactly is she winning (and loosing sometimes noone analyses her mistakes either) especially when many people in the comments say her games ugly or insufficient, she just gets easy draws...
“Cuz that’s not the fucking point “ 18:35 …. It was riveting before that statement but this exclamation …. This raw truth … is what tennis commentary needs . MOVIE !
I disagree with the joker conversation. You guys are giving him more grace than he should. These “lapses” has been happening more and more. He is one of the greatest of all time so why does he act like this every 2-3 months. To say Roger and Nadal didn’t have outburst every 2-3 months at the end of their careers is correct. Prime example Ben Shelton and joker us open last year. He mimicked Ben celebration. But joker was Ben when he first started. I wish he was more of a guide for players like himself but he doesn’t see himself in that light
Andy has to be politically correct because of the kind of podcast he does, and he probably wants to be in good terms with Novak after having mocked him in the past for his alleged injuries/illnesses
@@eduardochernia I get that but Novak has been skating by with little criticism. Look at how people are treating Ben Shelton when Novak does more damaging things in my opinion
Gamesmanship time n time again from Djok. Goat debate will never go away cos a lot of ppl just dislike the guy. Always with the shenanigans. Nardi just recently, Shelton at US, Sinner at Wimbledon, blah blah blah.
Great podcast! Loved watching you play Andy, and I’m loving the commentary! Both of you bring such a fresh, and real/raw perspectives on tennis. I really like coming here to listen to what you both are saying! Keep up the great work!
Hey Andy - loving the podcast so far. I love nerding out about tennis and hearing your insight as a former top pro as well as into the business side of the tennis industry is fascinating. Also, could you change the format of the titling? Sometimes its very hard to tell which one is just a short clip about a particular topic, and which is actually the Served podcast. It would be helpful because I mainly watch just the podcast and I'm sure there's many others like me
I see a lot of Andy Roddick in Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul. More Ben. I feel like both of them need better shot selection and become more consistent. American tennis is looking goodt
I've decided that it's best not to talk to anyone for the next seven/eight days. Just so that I can remain focused and completely locked in for the next episode.
here’s another take on the rule, allowing players to talk to coaches during the match: The rule gives it advantage to players who could afford to hire good coaches. This is definitely an advantage for the higher ranking players I preferred the rule that minimized getting information from coaches During a match. -Toby
I wish you could analyse women's game more. I think saying "oh świątek won again, great" doesn't do justice to wta part of this tournament 😢 How about technical stuff about her game, about sabalenka's game? Analysis why she lost?
Another great podcast, gets better every week! Stongly disagree with your views on Djokovic's behaviour. Great tennis player but he is a very ungracious human being. He has proved this to be true in public on many, many occasions throughout his career. I hope that all young upcoming players take note and choose other greats to be their role models.
You guys are amazing! No BS! Thank you. I disagree with Jon. Carlos and Jannik probably do shop together in the off season. Watch the prematch clip! They are joking with each other just before entering the court. Mentioning Fedal is not exaggeration. Those two guys might as well be brothers. They did an exhibition in Alicante at Juanki's academy before AO. They push each other. They're close friends.
Andy, do a show where you talk about that 2002 US Open match against Sampras where he put on a serve and volley, chip and charge clinic? What was it like playing him that day?
Love the podcast. As tennis insiders, Andy and Jon have shared that Novak is a friendly guy on the tour. That is an experience that is separate from what fans (tennis outsiders) have. Fans will like or dislike players for a variety of reasons (personality, playing style, when they started watching tennis, shared home countries, etc.) and that's valid whether you cheer for Rafa, Novak, Daniil, Jannik, Carlos, or anyone else. The narrative around Djokovic is that his fan base is smaller than that of other legends', but they are passionate and defensive. For those tennis outsiders (who do not have any professional relationship with Novak) who dislike Djokovic, his behavior in the Nardi match was another reason to justify their position. His fans will shrug it off or support Djokovic's position blindly. What this results in is that tennis insiders may have different data than tennis outsiders to weigh in determining their feelings about Djokovic, or any player. Novak's career will him being loved by his fans and disliked by other tennis fans. He's 37 and has had years of great wins, tough losses, and multiple ugly incidents. It's unlikely that he can win or lose fans between now and the end of his career, whenever that is. All that to say, it's a topic that may not need to be brought up anymore.
Yeah, Djokovic was undeniably way too salty with Nardi. He was mad because it was break point, Nardi stopped playing, and Djokovic hits a drop shot thinking he has the point 100% won. Instead, Nardi runs up and hits a passing shot. Had Nardi not gotten to the drop shot, Djokovic wouldn’t have cared, but because he did, Djokovic got mad at the umpire. Nardi made an honest mistake. It was not a way to mislead Djokovic, he just genuinely thought the serve was out. And he said he idolized Djokovic as a child and still has a poster of him on the wall. I hope Djokovic did reach out and apologize later.
Tremendous, informed chat. Iga definitely a generational talent. She keeps making incremental improvements to an already superb level and is a great athlete. Navarro looks a very hot prospect with ice in her veins. How the Ukranians perform at this level with their friends and family at risk is beyond my comprehension.
thank you for getting Jon Wertheim a new computer--much sharper and better. And you're right about Novak, for sure gamesmanship, he was petty with Nardi, needlessly petty. I'm a Novak fan but not always a fan of his actions. And I hate gameship no matter who engages in it.
I am commenting with regard to how a player reacts when what worked in the first set stops working in the second set. A player could react in either of two ways: Way number one: Gee, what I was working in the first set I’m no longer doing right. I’ve got to try to do it better. That is the wrong reaction, usually. Way number two: my opponent has adjusted. I have to adjust also. that’s the right reaction, and it’s harder to reach. -Toby
It’s just not true that Djokovic wasn’t letting it go at the handshake. Nardi was the one who brought it up to apologize for stopping and Novak interrupted him to say there was no need to apologize. He specifically wanted the kid to enjoy his moment, but now he’s being falsely accused of the exact opposite. I saw people claiming Djokovic brought it up at the net, but I thought Roddick and Wertheim would be wise enough to verify for themselves because they would see that it obviously isn’t true.
Fritz’s loss was brutal. Match point up on Rune, dominating the match up to that point, and then Rune just goes insane. I mean, Rune played great throughout the second set so Taylor did well to even get the match point. But Rune on a good day can just be unplayable. He gives everyone trouble because of how well-rounded he is. I really wasn’t expecting that; I felt like Fritz was geared in for a finals run here. I love the improvements he’s made so far and I think this will be the best season of his career. But speaking on Rune, I’m also very happy to see him playing well, and I’m hoping he can pull some great clay court results. Maybe he can win a Masters. Tiafoe is trending the opposite direction. I just think the forehand technique will hold him back from being consistent. Maybe he can have another great run in him and finish in or near the top 10, but I don’t think he’ll ever make the jump to being consistent and staying in that top 10. I like him a lot though and hope he can get it together. His US Open 2022 run is still probably the best grand slam run we’ve seen from an American since, well, Roddick. Tsitsipas’s backhand, for as much as it’s been called out, is only getting worse. I don’t know what he can do to fix it. He’s in serious danger here of just altering the whole course and direction of his career for the worse. He’s taken the step back from a grand slam contender to a guy outside the top 10 who can’t even challenge for a Masters title anymore. He desperately needs a big clay season, and I think some confidence would do wonders for his backhand. Loving the analysis here so far. Between you and Gill Gross, I have about 2 hours of tennis content to watch 😂 and Miami is starting up. This part of the calendar always spoils us.
That people say Alcaraz is better when Ferrero is there I think is not about whether coaching should be allowed. Ferrero has a calming effect on Alcaraz beyond coaching almost like a father figure. It is an interesting observation about their unique relationship. I feel like Roddick kind of took that discussion the wrong way…And got a bit self righteous about nothing.
"Uncle Tony...umh...some coach....clapping hands" ha ha Andy! Iga doesn't have anything that makes me want to watch her match.... her play and her personality she still has an air of a good junior, someone else's daughter from another team I didn't come to cheer for. But she's too well behaved and good natured to cheer against. Yeah she's great...yawn yawn Djokovic....... after all these years, you'd think that he would know how to act graciously at the net on that day. (Especially when he was sooo wrong.) But I guess that's his tenacity.
Three great coaching solutions: Sakkari is a different player with David Witt. She might finally win a major. Lehecka and Byrdich is revolutionary. Mouratoglou is Rune's coach. They'll have fun and occasionally it will be a shitshow. Annika being exiled was also necessary. Shelton and Jabeur need to bring in a former top player for advice. McEnroe, a left-hander, is the obvious choice for Ben the way Cahill compliments Simone for Jannik. Ons needs Navratilova.
Djokovic is the hair floating in an otherwise delicious soup. Yeah, it’s long, curly, well conditioned with no split ends, but it’s still a hair in my Federer soup.
One impact the Coaches advising the players on court has : it invalidates what they always say, it's a lonely sport out there once you go on the court... you're all by yourself. Especially in the ITFs, Challengers ... there are many players who cannot afford a travelling Coach. Previously, at least on court it was 'level-field' between have-s and have-not-s.
You & John make mention of Alcaraz’s lapses in Australia when JC wasn’t able to be there. I think it was highly notable, as well. John even went so far as to use the term “clueless.” Again, pretty accurate. And yes, coaching is now allowed. I wonder your thoughts, Andy and John, how much of a crutch you feel legal coaching is. The true greats didn’t have that- obviously I’m looking at Venus & Serena, who at times barely spared so much as a glance at the box, Rafa (same), Roger, Kim C, and many others- obviously due to the times. But it also makes for an even stronger mental grip on the game when you have to figure it out for yourself. So I also wonder your thoughts on how much is lost for having someone give you all the answers on the test vs. the reward for figuring it out for yourself.
I am disappointed... You talk 3 minutes about womens final around 9 about mens Semi and 10 about Mens Final. You should do better, more insight about Sakkari, Iga...
Andy and Tom - your comments were balanced and represent the goodness and flaws of Novak pretty accurately. However, I have an explanation for Novak’s actions that most have overlooked. Lines until recently were called by linespersons. If a player saw a serve as out, he/she will challenge immediately. Nardi would have done the same. Djoker in his subconscious mind, reckoned that Nardi is not playing that ball and maybe will appeal. Nardi realized in the instant that he had to play because he would lose the point if he stopped. Djoker was confused momentarily and lost his bearings. On colder reflection he would have realized he was wrong under the current electronic calling regime.
Another great episode. Thanks to Andy, Jon and team. I don't agree with Andy in "Novak doesn't care about the social goodwill he built previous week in LA" statement. Next to the Grand Slams, being liked is the most important thing to Novak. But he is not a naturally likable person.
Get Andy Murray on here
This is becoming something I look forward to every single week. Love it!
By far, my favorite Tennis show/podcast. Really enjoy Andy's insight on the game.

What a fantastic Tournament for Iga! Superb, calm, cheerful personality, and great Champion 🙂
Doesn’t get more expert than this. Thx to both of you for the incredibly knowledgeable analytics of everything that mattered at IW. Brilliant.
The GOAT is Andy here! Great production, so good with words, analysis never heard like this before. Humor in it, humble as always. The best new podcast and now I'm addicted
Always an Andy Roddick fan! This has become my one of my new favorite podcasts. Keep up the interesting commentary and continue to be yourself. 😊
Thank you, gentlemen, for recognizing what the Ukrainian players have been going through.
This is awesome! I’m a huge fan of Roddick. Still rocking the PD Roddick +. The insight you are giving is awesome! Giving the fans what they want!!
Love all this content and in-depth analysis on the game.
I really like your podcast. It's always nice to hear from pros and ex-players.
Between this one and the Tennis Podcast is something that I can look forward to each week, Awesome job Andy!! Thank you,
Im so happy this came across my feed. Loving the content and its great hearing Andy speak in depth about this sport.

Just discovered my favorite childhood player doing a podcast. Great!
Thanks for your discerning comments on current players. Best so far.

Thanks for supporting and acknowledge Ukrainians girls going extra mile! 🇺🇦
Loving the Podcast!!!!
As a tennis fan and Nebraska boy I love this podcast. ❤
Loving this
Luv your show!!! ALCARAZ❤💯
This is a super channel and the bedst.!!!!
I disagree with the joker conversation. You guys are giving him more grace than he should. These “lapses” has been happening more and more. Prime example Ben Shelton and joker us open last year. He mimicked Ben celebration. But joker was Ben when he first started. I wish he was more of a guide for players like himself but he doesn’t see himself in that light
Ben Shelton was a complete cocky ass and deserved what Novak gave to him
Andy has to be politically correct because of the kind of podcast he does, and he probably wants to be in good terms with Novak after having mocked him in the past for his alleged injuries/illnesses
@@eduardochernia I get that but Novak has been skating by with little criticism. Look at how people are treating Ben Shelton when Novak does more damaging things in my opinion

Thanks for the engaging and entertaining podcast, Andy and Jon. I appreciated the shoutout to Ukrainian women's tennis.

I see a lot of Andy Roddick in Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul. More Ben. I feel like both of them need better shot selection and become more consistent. American tennis is looking goodt
Tommy Paul serve and volleying against Med - over and over again - was the awesomest thing I saw at IW this year

My guest wish list: Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev...love him!
Please and thank you. Love the podcast 👌
I think he probably could get Roger eventually and Murray after he's done, but the other two may be harder.Could be wrong though.
Disagree with the fluke loss statement, Nardi simply outplayed Djokovic...
Would've like to have seen Jon ask Djokovic the "water bottle" question, but glad to see him upgrade from 480p.

BTW Vagnozzi (Sinner's tactical coach) wasn't present in Indian Wells due to a surgery
Big facts about Ukrainian women and men in tennis ❤
I think Andy should put on the visor again and frost BG's cupcakes! There's nothing wrong with a visor - just swing a golf club 🙂
Wow this Andy Roddick 🇺🇲guy knows a lot. He knows a lot for being a commentator. Probably played racquet sports 🏆in his youth 🎾🏸
Not having the “big three” is the best thing that could happen for tennis. Much more variety in people and how they manage through the draw.
Have you covered Simona's return to Miami?
It's not "Alcaras" but "Alcarath", the stress on the last "a", not the first one.
Also "z" in Spain is pronounced as "th". Thus it's AlcaraTH.
The dismay on Medvedev's face when he played Alcaraz reminded me of when Andy ( and Lleyton H ) played Roger. There wasn't much that they could "do".

oh so now Djokovic is Best of All time now, Andy? @34:27 Having said that, I agree the net incident of Novak and Nardi is rather disappointing
New Gen allows for new fans....especially with this crop of high level players.
I think Djokavic felt like a fool for stopping, which is why he spent so much time trying to justify it. We all do that occasionally.
alcaraz back
"Uncle Tony...umh...some coach....clapping hands" ha ha Andy!
Iga doesn't have anything that makes me want to watch her match.... her play and her personality she still has an air of a good junior, someone else's daughter from another team I didn't come to cheer for. But she's too well behaved and good natured to cheer against. Yeah she's great...yawn yawn
Djokovic....... after all these years, you'd think that he would know how to act graciously at the net on that day.
Novak's nutts are also in that federer soup
So I also wonder your thoughts on how much is lost for having someone give you all the answers on the test vs. the reward for figuring it out for yourself.
record setting attendance? saw lots of empty seats, particularly women's final
Why medevedev and zverev can’t create own pace when slice coming? What is lacking technically?? Thanks!
I am disappointed... You talk 3 minutes about womens final around 9 about mens Semi and 10 about Mens Final.
You should do better, more insight about Sakkari, Iga...
Most people don't pay attention to women's sports. Thats why
Go check the Navratilova, Davenport , Evert podcasts !
Alcaraz - Sinner 🤝 Nadal - Federer
Quality content 🙌 Just please don’t talk politics…ever!!! 😵💫
Novak was embarrassed…. And frustrated…… and he took it out on Nardi. He made the petty move at the handshake.
Don’t worry about upsetting Novak fans. They’re crazy and irrational. Can’t take any criticism of their god.
Another great episode. Thanks to Andy, Jon and team.
I don't agree with Andy in "Novak doesn't care about the social goodwill he built previous week in LA" statement. Next to the Grand Slams, being liked is the most important thing to Novak. But he is not a naturally likable person.
