I'm Spanish so I understand all the instructions Ferrero gives during the match and I have to say he's not giving him magic tricks or moving him like a puppet 😅He mostly cheer him up, tells him to be calm, to remain focus, etc. It's 90% emotional support and some occasional hint here and there. So the Ferrero effect is the placebo effect and I'm sure Alcaraz will need less and less of it as he keeps maturing as a player.

Ferrero´s live feedback is more entertaining that any hot lines we got from the Netflix series about life around the tennis court. One of my favorite Ferrero´s lines was one day when I think Medvedev hit an amazing shot from the very far back court againts Carlos a couples of years ago. On the verge of dissapointment, Ferrero just told him: You left him with no options to do such an amazing shot.

To think that Alcaraz would have not learned and will not continue to learn problem solving... Come on...
I recommend to go back and watch the Wimbledon final. The player's box is way up i.e. not courtside and there was a fair amount of steady crowd noise in between points. Understandably since the match had you on the edge of your seat. There wasn't much chance to give advice, apart from some hand signals perhaps. But it was mainly Alcaraz himself solving whatever was thrown at him that day.
Great point by Andy about expediting problem solving. Alcaraz is learning and picking up things all the time, and probably even quicker with Ferrero's coaching.

Right on, Andy. Totally with you and love your "Yeah and?" take. It's the rule. People who can't control their ire for his success need to check themselves. Plus, other players take advantage of the rule as well. To take the counter stance on whether he has success without JC Ferrero, he had success at Queens right before Wimbledon last year when JCF was not there. As you say, small sample size, but he is so damn young. I just love all this kid is doing for the game and sport in general. Love the podcast

People get so pressed over Carlos! Just let the kid live! Who cares if JCF is there or not? Carlos will learn. He’s only 20. Give him time to mature.

He won the US open, was world number 1 and went to 3 Wimbledon finals against Federer, one of them winning the most games anyone has ever won to not then win the tournament. I think he can talk tennis without being accused of arrogance!

Why is there so much hatred of Carlos? Sinner received instructions from Cahill who said "try something different" when he was losing. Apparently the Twitter Haters don't have a problem with that. No matter how many instructions are given the player has to execute which is not easy. Congratulations Carlos for a magnificent Indian Wells victory! Now go make these haters angrier in Miami and the rest of the year.

That’s true, it’s now in the rules to allow coaching! Alcaraz has been successful without Ferrero in the box back in Miami 2022 when he made the final without him and then won the final when he flew in from Spain!

Thank you for doing this podcast. I watched you in the early 2000s during my formative years so I consider you part of my “tennis home”, even blow out my shoulder trying to emulate your serve 😂 To listen to you break it down in so much detail, its actually even putting pieces together from tennis stuff I saw when you or past players were playing. For the rec player/avid fan to finally get real talk and “inside baseball” breakdowns from someone who’s BEEN THERE up against the big 3, is just a joy for all the tennis nerds out there.

I think the issue is that the rule change was quite controversial and many fans (myself included) didn't appreciate the change.
You can say that is rife and happening anyway but there are ways of addressing that which were never looked at (e.g. don't allow coaches to attend matches) and so that element of solo problem solving will/has dropped away.
On the glove point, I assume the point of prohibiting it was a matter of access. To use the example given, everyone can use the ice towels but presumably only Djokovic had brought this glove so he would have had a unique advantage (until others could purchase one).

remember that while Ferrero was not in AO, he was texting backup coach Manuel. Charlie just had a big brainfart against Zverev.

everyone has the same rights regarding the coaching, that is to say, Alcaraz is not winning because of the coach. It´s like saying the Pizzas was good because of the chef only. Nop, the ingredients have to be top notch, the process, the cooking the technique

people acting like ferreo is using a ps5 joystick to control carlos .. from my understanding he is mostly cheering him on trying to keep him focused and here and there some tactical advice like EVERY other coach does .. and the other thing carlos relies so much on his abilities and instincts on court so many things he does that ferrero could never teach him .. hes a genious stop acting like without ferrero he would be a mid player or something

I hate that they changed the rules and now officially allow coaching. What I love about tennis as a recreational player and as a spectator is, that you have to problem solve. It's you alone on the court against your opponent and you have to find answers to the questions that you opponent asks. Some players have a better tactical understanding and awareness of the game and by allowing coaching during the match these players lose that advantage. Not even to mention that some lower ranked players don't have the ressources to pay for a travelling coach.

It’s all just bullshit ‘Twitter fingers’. Both Cahill and JCF were coaching throughout. Which is their job. Side note on Alcaraz: he’s won four of his tournaments without JCF there. Conclusion: agree with Andy. This is a non-conversation.

We all make predictions and they all mean nothing... but they are still fun to make. My prediction is that Alcaraz will win between 10 - 15 majors in his career. What gets me about backseat drivers is they don't understand what a Herculean feat it is to win "just" 1 major. Andy Roddick won 1 major but it doesn't make him any less of a tennis icon. It does not matter if Alcaraz will surpass Djokovic's record. Players like Alcaraz and Sinner are carving a new era for themselves. Let us all enjoy their talent, athleticism, and artistry.

If it's in the rules then it's fair game imho - literally. Hitting to the body, underarm serve, coaching from the stands. You probably won't win any friends like that but tiger's do not lose sleep over the opinions of sheep...

Yup it’s legal so there’s nothing to complain about. However I think as much as it was difficult to enforce, allowing blatant coaching takes away from who’s actually competing. It’s teams against teams now, not necessarily player against player. IMO singles tennis is an individual sport, not a team sport. A big part of what makes a good player is the psychological and tactical management.
