Andy is so knowledgeable, brilliant and sensitive all at the same time. I enjoy how he tells stories and opens up. Jon Wertheim asks really thoughtful questions. They all have great chemistry. Love the show.
At 70 years old, I and my wife and three adult children went to Wimbledon for the first time. Spent hours in the que before going in and loved every minute of it.
As a Brit, Andy, I was genuinely heart warmed by your passionate ode to Wimbledon. I have been lucky enough to get public ballot tickets in 2019 and 2022. Having watched it on TV all my life, I actually had tears in my eyes the first time I went through the gates. It is a magical place.
Nominate this podcast for awards people! The insight and the facts as well as the detailed and in-depth experiences described by Roddick and Wertheim are priceless and exciting!! Siskel and Ebert would have given this podcast a two thumbs up if it were a movie. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The five hour chunk of time I spent in the queue was one of my favorite parts of going to Wimbledon. I met English fans who go every year. Inside, the people running the tournament were lovely. I also was able to talk and meet people everywhere I went. It felt like a large family event.
I say this often but, I don't care and will say this again, this was an amazing episode. This one felt so personal, I really wasn't expecting that. JW did a great job in just letting Andy speak and give so many of his insights regarding what it feels like to be at Wimbledon. And it warms my heart that Andy is one of a, extremely select, few to be invited to a membership after not winning. It feels right, deserved and congratulations. The movie review part was wonderful, Sophie did a great review, but also seeing Andy speak about his shared history with Federer was something I wanted to see (and frankly missed) on the twelve final days doc. I know it was a very concrete look, but I was still hoping to see Andy speak a bit at some point in the documentary, heck I think I said as much on Instagram when Sophie posted about the review. This IS a great annex to that documentary. And also, while we're being sentimental here, just want to call out and appreciate Andy's class. A lot is, rightly, said about Federer's class, but not enough is said about our favourite brash, American tennis player's class in handling himself. We might have started being fans because of the OMG serve, a soundbite or a hilarious press conference, but we stay because of the intelligence, transparency and class. Looking forward to the live reactions for Wimledon's draw, though I don't think we'll top that Rafa-Zverev RG reaction :)
Great podcast and I really enjoyed hearing Andy talk about his love of Wimbledon. While I have never seen a match there, I was fortunate to have done a 2 hour tour of it. Sitting at center court and being told about the history of Wimbledon was fantastic. We visited "Henman Hill" and if you go far enough to one side, you get a nice view of London. I also got to be in the famous interview room and had picture taken of myself sitting at that podium behind the mike. One other highlight was going to Court 18 and seeing the sign about the Isner match that was the longest in Wimbledon history. Looking forward to Wimbledon 2024
It would be nice if the French Open can move up one week earlier and then you can have 4 full weeks of warm-up grass tournaments before Wimbledon. It would be closer to the break between Wimbledon and US Open which is about 6 weeks.
Problem is they would have to axe a clay masters event, I feel like they shouldn’t move Madrid to the end of the season like it used to be since it has roof, and get rid of the Paris masters, it’s kinda pointless anyway and Paris already has RG. That would make it so RG could start 2 weeks earlier, that would allow a full month in grass before Wimbledon
This was just brilliant! I loved hearing about your Wimbledon insights and experiences - the details you gave were just fantastic! Truly, this, and 'the money' pod are my two favs in many years. I listen to, um, about eight other tennis-related pods. Yours is quickly becoming the tops! Thanks SO much! (Also, your guests, regular and special, are so appreciated.)
Love Andy’s stories and experiences about Wimbledon….this is something we “normal” people will never experience and Andy shares so well the behind the scene….
Andy, not only do I love your podcast, but it has actually made me MORE interested in tennis. I always followed the slams but since listening to you I’ve been following the tournaments in btw as well!
Andy re Wimbledon. Lovely, lovely words! Heartfelt, respectful and clearly 100% sincere - as a Brit, thank you! Should add I was fortunate enough to see you in C1 a few years ago. You won I hasten to add.
I love Tommy Paul’s game. So glad he’s buckled down. It’s been hard to see the US men and think, man they don’t have the work ethnic. Really rooting for him.
I absolutely agree that we should have a longer grass court season and a 1000 leading up to Wimbledon, but the problem is not the clay court season. There is too much hard courts and there should be a better balance between the 3 surfaces
I've had the same injury and surgery as Nole, and the recovery was quick. I'd guess it's one of the least serious knee injuries one can have. The guy's a world class athlete. I'm not surprised he's able to play at Wimbledon.
Andy, this story of you being offered All England Lawn Tennis (and Croquet?) Club membership and accepting is a beautiful story. This anecdote is up there with Roger Federer talking to Trevor Noah about him visiting Wimbledon ground and not being recognized as a member and denied entry by a security lady (doing her duty, well, dutifully). This beautiful incidence also brought to my mind what Roger said once, I think to your face in a short interview that you did - he said something like 'to my mind you are a champion there'. I know it is painful to you, but you should also probably take some pleasure that true connoisseurs appreciate your superb performances at SW19 over the years. Cheers!
I loved that story of Roger not getting into Wimbledon, the way he told it was so funny and I love it that Trevor Noah was the one interviewing him. Two of my favourite people in the world in one room.
Andy Roddick: my myth, my absolute hero. How many memories I have related to your matches, your battles against federer at wimbledon, your victory at Us Open. say me hello, it would be much appreciated 😊😊😊💙
Andy , doing things the traditional way is so under-rated. Not always. But many times, it is. Especialy if those traditions hve reasons behind it. Not mindless stuff.
Andy I’ve always been an admirer of yours. One of my relatively early tennis memories is you beating Sampras (my all time fav) in Miami in 2001 to proceed to the quarters 😂 I’m not sure now, after following since episode 1, if you’re a better storyteller than you were a tennis player. Cause you were one hell of a tennis player. Congrats on another episode that hit the soul when you talked about Wimbledon. I can only imagine, and I’m betting it’s not close, how it felt to walk out to center court, through the stands to play Roger. Thank you for transporting me to that place through your eyes 🎾 ❤
Regarding Andy Murray. What if he does pull out of Wimbledon due to the surgery then decides he'll retire next year at Wimbledon instead, for that well earned send off. Turns out he's in far less pain is able to move a little more freely and can continue to play more aggressively with his new racket and mindset. Maybe wins an ATP 250 or two and gets to a slam semi final. Feels like a much more fitting end than this year would be for him.
Andy, I loved your rendition of Alan Mills with the British accent, very well done!😅 What a lovely view into Wimbledon and also the part about Roger. What an amazing and humble human being. So glad he made that statement about Novak. I hope the fans hear this and learn from Roger. I hate it when people feel the need to hate another player just because it's not their favourite player.
Novak is just a freak of nature like Giannis. I mean he is probably the most flexible player since Paradorn Srichaphan which has to help in the injury front.
Novak's speedy recovery sounds a lot like the Giannis Antetokounmpo knee injury recovery (6 days after hyper-extension) leading into the NBA finals highlighted in the Giannis documentary.
Thanks again for the best tennis show out there!! Ps: Early 2000 I got to hit with Nicolas thomann on your tennis court in boca (you injured your hand playing computer games too long 🤣) You were in your room that day so didn't get to meet you. 😢😢😢
I wish I had such a great experience as Andy. It’s a great place, don’t get me wrong. Unfortunately, the queue is long but well organized. Also, you have 3-4 rows of fans in front of you to watch a match….Unfortunatly , I’m only 5.8 😂. Still worth ONE visit !
Myself and a friend would go every year to Wimbledon; We'd camp in the queue for Men's third round, row c-ish, around the service line, sat behind the players. Every year, bar two, between 1989 and 2005. And we saw all the greats of the era. I'm lucky to have been to all the Grand Slam show courts but Wimbledon Centre Court - probably my favourite place on Earth. Still waiting for the official Biography of Roger's career and have yet to see the docu. There are many stories of his humility - one being in the locker room after Wimbledon 2009 that Roddick would remember, surely. I also wish Murray gets the send-off he deserves - be that here or at the Olympics. Won almost as many Gold medals as Grand Slams so either situ would be fine. Novak deserves one last shot at the title, at least. Time remains undefeated but his resilience against it is impressive. But the rise of other players makes it harder and harder so we'll see. If I've learnt anything about him it's to never write him off. Outstanding podcast. I'm so happy that this is recorded gut-feeling and not rehearsed. Its a credit to you all...
Andy, as a tennis fan, it's really annoying to watch tennis on TV with a high angle. Why can't the producers make tennis better to watch on TV - it is far more exciting as a lower angle. In addition, why can't can't the serve timer clock be visible in the frame??? Please bring up the tv viewing experience in one of your shows.
Lol! Robinsons Lemon Barley is just lemon squash. Supposed to refresh and presumeably give the player a sugar injection back in the day when, other than water, it was the only refreshment & was kept (in coolers??) on the back of the Umpire's chair.
Hey Andy, agree to longer grass season requirement, but reducing the clay season or saying that clay has 3 1000s is not the way forward. I feel hard court tournaments can be adjusted to lengthen grass season
Probably coz Murray waited too long to retire and he almost became irrelevant due to so many losses. People tend to remember only the more recent events. But my cousin loves Murray so much and I learned about him thru her
Andy-sorry if I’ve missed it but do you have an episode that talks about the state of tennis in America and beyond competing for space with pickleball?
honest question, if he is not playing, why bring his whole team to London? Sightseeing? He has to pay spend a lot of money accomodating his team, pay his team, etc
I think winning Wimbledon doesn’t grantee membership. I think John McEnroe won and didn’t get membership. If you can’t get tickets to the tournament- I highly suggest taking a tour of the grounds. It’s still magical and they tell you a TON about the AELTC.
Andy is right, Rafa is very good on grass, not smart to skip Wimbledon..Rafa can easily make to QF and SF, if somehow, Djoker is out, i think nadal has a shot winning it
Jon Wertheim lost all credibility when he said ''even if healthy, i think novak would have skipped wimbledon for the olympics.'' this is the dumbest thing i've heard in a while. this man is literally rushing knee recovery to play wimbledon but you think he wouldn't play it if he was completely healthy? madness. he has better chance at wimbledon than olympics which is best of 3 and easier to knock him out
Of course, you can't underestimate Djoko nor medical advances, but Father Time remains undefeated too. I don't know what will happen for Djoko at Wimbledon but I'll need to see it to believe it. If he plays Wimbledon, and goes deep, then I think he'll be sacrificing the Olympics and representing Serbia. That may be a trade worth making for him but at this moment, I remain unconvinced. Best of luck to him regardless. He's one of the all-time greats whatever happens.
The movie was good, but I miss having conversations and vulnerability. They should have asked the players about how they felt about Roger and vice versa, what kind of role he played in their career, etc. I really like how Andy is talking about the big 3. That is how I feel: only fans are making this unbearable. They are all great!
Im sorry for not seeing a sinner alcaraz final yet as they will be in the same draw. I dream of this draw : alcaraz and djokovic on one side. Sinner on the other
@@fwvw7056 if Djokovic plays, and he will play, sinner is going to be seeded 1 and djoko 2 so can meet only in the final because they are on opposite sides of the draw. While Alcaraz could be either on sinner side or on djokovic side. And my dream is to see djokovic on the same side of the draw as alcaraz. Thanks for subscribing to my channel if you liked this explanation. 🥹
The sole comparison to clay is not fair in my important. It is not that clay is over represented, but hard courts are. In my opinion, it would be cool if a third of the tournaments were played on grass, a third on clay and a third on hard courts. And the fourth grand slam changes every year from grass to clay to hard, such that i the long term we have exxactly 1/3,1/3,1/3. Imagine, this would be the case, I highly doubt that Novak would have most slams ;)
1%-2% improvement per day is what he talked about - The whole UBERMAN gumby Djoker-esque possibility. Over & over they years - during AO & torn tissue/muscle wins the Tournament. Just even practicing @ Wimby IZ JUST CRAZZZZY! Novak is just a different mindset physical specimen kind of animal. Djoker is the master Captain/Crew maestro of his domain. Wimby-24 as a possibility is just beyond words. Andy, Roger & Rafa with surgeries versus Novak being back on the court 2 weeks post-surgery just beyond human no matter how advanced medical tech has come. Cheers JW & AR. IDEMO NOLE!!! - Best, Milan
Andy is so knowledgeable, brilliant and sensitive all at the same time. I enjoy how he tells stories and opens up. Jon Wertheim asks really thoughtful questions. They all have great chemistry. Love the show.

Also like when Producer Mike chimes in, he's underrated.
Agreed. Great "light skin energy", amirite?
We deserve a longer Grass season!!!

That is how I feel: only fans are making this unbearable. They are all great!
Im sorry for not seeing a sinner alcaraz final yet as they will be in the same draw. I dream of this draw : alcaraz and djokovic on one side. Sinner on the other
How are they on the same draw?
@@fwvw7056 if Djokovic plays, and he will play, sinner is going to be seeded 1 and djoko 2 so can meet only in the final because they are on opposite sides of the draw. While Alcaraz could be either on sinner side or on djokovic side. And my dream is to see djokovic on the same side of the draw as alcaraz. What does getting inducted mean? In Andy's context
Always thought it was ridiculous that Newport Open is AFTER Wimbledon
"Give-a-shittedness". Good, descriptive word.
Our political class could learn a lot from Andy about respect.
