If you have any more than a few files or have any folders at all, the much better way to do this is to click the folder you want to copy, then click the 3 dots at the top, then download it as zip. Unzip it and then open the folder you want to copy to, and move/upload the unzipped files there.
Additionally, you can check a checkmark in the settings of the destination drive, that says you want to convert uploads to the google drive format. I did this, because otherwise all google drive-made documents will be docx (office format) instead. This is because downloading them puts them in office format for local editing. I do hope this whole thing doesn't mess up spreadsheets though. Haven't tested that yet.
I have files in GBs. So, i did not want to use my internet bandwidth and instead use google's internal movement itself. This copy to clipboard as well download upload takes away half of my monthly limits. Any idea around that ?
@jaspreetmodi is this method work for large size file like for 1gb to 4 as I have to copy one drive folder to my drive as I want to store it so how can I do it
@@Saurabh0406 one drive nahi. .. yaha google drive ki baat chal rahi hai. If yours is google drive, you can obviously download as much as you want to your machine and store it.
It worked! for those who did not work for you, you can't copy entire folders with files inside! you would need to select the files you want to copy and Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V
It appears to me that copy copies to the clipboard which is my local. So, affectively am i using my internet bandwidth ... ? just like a download upload would ? This is a problem if i have GBs of files coz monthly data is limited.
If I am given a shared folder, and I make a copy of the contents, and then my access is restricted, is the copy independent from the source material completely?
Yes, it is. Can this be taken advantage of? Yes, it can. In other words, don't share a folder (or document) with someone that you may want them to not have access to later on.
@@AnsonAlexander You actually should pull this video and do another. How many people have subfolders? Like a zillion. So they will think they can highlight everything files and subfolders and it will copy everything. They will be wrong.
I have a folder I need to share with someone and due to firewalls I need to make a copy of everything shared with me for this project - however there are folders inside of folders - and each folders has a ton of files in it. I'm actually worried about downloading it as zipped I hope it's not too big.
Doesn’t this just create symbolic links to the shared files, instead of actually moving the data to your Google drive? Would the data of those copied files then be downloaded to a PC running Google Drive with file mirroring on? If the shared files were detached from your account by the owner, would those files still exist in your Google drive or would they become broken symbolic links?
As far as I know, you'll have to use a computer or at least force a the desktop version of the site in a mobile browser - but honestly that would be way more hassle than just using a computer.
Are you saying you're on PC or Mac? I did this on Mac but it really doesn't matter. Make sure you're copying and pasting from the Google Docs edit menu and not using keyboard shortcuts - they don't work very well in Google Docs.

Total game changer with folders. He should have put up a big warning. Google reeks, it just does.
Thank you! I was copying each file in the folder and it was taking forever!
You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you, this is the most non intuitive process ever. I do this once a month for a shared folder and forget how every time.
Yes, it could definitely be streamlines. I'm glad the video was able to help out!
Omg thank you SO much, you saved me from tearing my hair out even further lol. I appreciate it!
You're very welcome, I'm glad it was helpful!
Really helpful - just what I needed!
Thank you so much, appreciate your work! From Vietnam
You're welcome!
Good video very simple and it works thanks!
Copying files still works, just make sure you don't have any folder selected, as you can't copy a folder along with files with this method.
Yup, this is what I was looking for. Silly that Google doesn't make it easier with a "Move a copy to my drive" command or something.
It appears to me that copy copies to the clipboard which is my local. So, affectively am i using my internet bandwidth ... ? just like a download upload would ? This is a problem if i have GBs of files coz monthly data is limited.

I copies 10 GB to my drive in just 5 min, thank you so much
For folders it says you can not copy entire folders
Thanks Anson
If the the shared folder was deleted, the copy file in the new folder will be delete too?
I'm always impressed how terrible user interfaces huge companies design. Especially Google, it is definitely a champion of bad design.

Even If I lose the access from the primary shared folder will the copy stay with me?
Absolutely, yes!
@@AnsonAlexander Sure?
2025 - still works kids!
thank you!!!
I found a solution to this already; and there are no videos about it on TH-cam. 😅🤩🤩
How did you do😢? Pls help me
@@hokivn8335 do you’ve a two screen?
How??

learned something
yay!
thanks!
Didn't work for me on Mac
You did it using only keyboard shortcuts? It should work unless maybe you only have view permissions?
it will not sync with the files shared by someone
Not Working. Did they change it?
Unfortunately it copies only 100 files without informing that not all files got copied :(
thank you.
I can't make a copy of shared folders that aren't mine on mobile.

tq very much

it did not work.
is there another way to copy 700gb shared data to my drive without using colab?
Brother, did you found the method?
How does this work on mobile
Honestly, haven't tried, it's something I would just do on a computer.
This DOES NOT WORK. I can't even copy these files with CTRL C but I can "Make a copy"
It does work. Instead of using CTRL C, use the edit menu as I showed in the video. Google Drive is funky with keyboard shortcuts.
@@AnsonAlexander It does not work. Maybe it is a feature they removed? You can only create a shortcut.
It did not work for me using the short cut
You need to use keyboard shortcuts and not use the edit menu or right clicking. Unfortunately, that is the way Google Drive is programmed.
not for me either.
Very helpful, thanks... now Google, stop forcing the "Copy of" into the file name!
Didn't work for my computer. Must be a PC thing.

Doesn't work copy paste is removed, and neither the shortcuts work. I really loath dumb people who design and build UIs like these.
