Great cars. I had 2 of them, a dark blue and an ember glow (copper). Both had the most violent wheel hop of any car I ever owned. I finally tamed it with Lakewood traction bars … after I snapped u joints and leaf spring bolts a couple times. In stock form, no match for even a 325HP 396 Chevelle. I built one with a solid lifter medium riser 427 cam and 3310 Holley and the other with a 428 SCJ cam, The SCJ cammed motor ran better. Bought a 428 SCJ motor out of a totaled mustang and swapped it in the copper one. That was the ticket … a lot of them as a matter fact. lol
Hey Neighborscomplaint I owned a 1967 Fairlane GTA 390/320 hp, C-6, 3.25 geared 9 inch, I raced 1 1966 396/325 hp CHEVELLE, 2 1967's, 1 1968, 3 1969's and 1 1970 LS-6 Chevelle. The only race I lost was to the 1970 LS-6 and even that race had me winning in 1st and 2nd gears only to be overtaken in drive. Now for some NHRA Stock Eliminator specs on 320 hp 390's and 325 hp 396's, 10.25 cr for chevy, 10.5 cr for ford, 2.07 intake for chevy 2.04 for the ford, 1.72 exhaust for chevy 1.56 for ford, rochester 4mv for chevy carb, holley 4 barrel carb for ford, 398 thousandths lift intake and exhaust for chevy, 481 thousandths intake 490 thousandths exhaust for ford and the 1966/1967 ss 396 chevelles weighed within 50 pounds of the fairlanes. The cars were pretty evenly matched , but the low lift cam and the valve keeper, valve retainer breakage issue was a problem for 396's, valve spring presaure was a problem for some 390's, mine had good valve springs because i could rev to 6200 rpm with no valve float. I was a very ignorant teenager when I was racing those chevelles so looking back I'm amazed that i won so many( in NHRA classification guide a 1970 chevelle is an A/stocker and a 1967 320 / 390 fairlane is a E/ stocker) so if we had raced at a sanctioned dragstrip the LS-6 would have to spot the difference in the index . I raced the guy headsup, but a fair headsup race would have been a 1966/67 427 Faitlane which also runs A/stock.
I CAN"T STAND THE HORRIBLE MUSIC TRACK - SO INAPPROPRIATE FOR A 1966 ERA AUTOMOBILE. I COULD WATCH WITH THE SOUND TURNED OFF - BUT AS PROTEST I STOPPED at 0:35 sec AND WILL GIVE THIS A FAT THUMBS DOWN.
