How to Sync Video and Audio: Multiple Cameras and Tracks
When I first started out in video production, on my first multi-camera shoot I had no idea how to sync video tracks from multiple sources. I sat there for hours trying to manually sync up all the video and audio tracks for editing (If you've ever tried this you know how painful it can be!) It didn’t take long for me to discover there was a much quicker way...
You’ve probably seen a clapper board many times before, but not known exactly what it’s for… Well, it's a tool filmmakers use to simplify the process of syncing up their footage across multiple cameras and microphones. The way it works is incredibly simple: The board provides both a visual and audio marker at a specific moment in time that filmmakers can use in post-production to sync up each camera/microphone.
You can easily use the same method to sync up your audio and video sources, even without a clapper board - and that’s what we’re running through in this video!
Hope this saves you some serious time too!

Marc Caplen I know. That thing always annoyed me. I guess I sort of do this but I use harsh sounds to sync up audio. I’m starting to clang my Horseshoes together to make a definite sound for syncing my split screen videos.

Great video. I used to do live multi camera weddings, events, bands and the like. I would start all my ( sometimes 4) cameras rolling and then I would pop off a flash from still camera. There was my perfect sync point because the flash took only 1 frame of video so I would just jog them all to that point in multiple vcrs then hit the pause on the remote and all the cameras were playing together in sync into my video mixing board. That was back in the day there is probably tons of new equipment now to do this.

Exactly what I was looking for, a trick like that. Now, the next stage is: how to find a way for sound channels to sync automatically to such signal. You mention pluraleyes, by now. This step is going to be a delicate zone.

What I am wondering now is how to sync all my footage when my DSLRs are stopping and starting (making new files) all at different times. I get that I can clap once at the beginning and that is recorded on all three cameras; but they DSLRs are stopping and making new files during the event that is being recorded. I'm just not quite sure how it can all be synced together perfectly and easily...without heaps of fiddling around. Maybe PluralEyes can help with this...or possibly PremierePro's sync feature...

be careful though..... in my experience the audio is always a frame or two off from the video. So on a clapper - in post... I say the visual of the stick hitting is my sync "point in" regardless of the audio....which is never right on the mark. Then i line the audio up on the visual clap

Hi justin, I want to create a single youtube video in english as well as hindi language. Is this thing doable? If yes then plz explain in your next video. I m desperately waiting as I watched many videos but not got any clarity. The way u explain is very good and u make things simple and ur videos are easy to understand. So if possible plz prepare ur next video on this topic like "how to prepare a youtube video in multiple languages. Reply awaited.

Hello Justin, I have some questions:
If you synchronise sound with the clapper board, is it the same with the video footage? How do you do that?
I want to film with my smartphone and my Canon 6D. How can I mix the footage of both cameras filming the same scene from different angles? I know that both footages will have different qualities but will the footages have the same format?
How can I make sure that they are the same format?
Sorry for so many questions :)
    All the best!!!

Excellent and informative video and this is why I've been subscribed. I have two questions.
    1. Who makes the most solid professional "clapper boards" aka slates? So many options out there are full of terrible gimmicks or are props not intended for use and abuse.
    2. PluralEyes is no longer supported which has me concerned as to why and looks like I can't buy or download a demo anyway. Have you seen a better or comparable software you'd suggest from personal experience?

Thanks Justin.... it's really helpful, I've been trying to sync my voice recorded on the Olympus WS-831 and the video recorded on my Nikon D90 and it was a nightmare. However it's so easy doing it making a strong sound recorded by the cam and the audio recorder at the same time. I don't have a clap board, I will do it manually. I'm very 😡 'cause I'm using iMovie (its free on MACOSX) I dont want pirate software neither spend money right now buying it.... the trouble is that iMovie does not accept mp3 audio format (this is the format of the Olympus WS 831) I have to trasnform the audio to work with it into iMovie. That's the world of compatibilities 🙄 ok bro! your video has been very timely 👍🏼. Lot of 😘

I've tried the clapperboard thing so many times but as the day goes on and the time starts to run out the clapperboard just becomes a hassel. A clap is enough and to be fair if you're using Plurilize and you have scratch audio on both cameras you don't even need that.

Set up is 2 camera 3 lavalier microphones recorded on phone using voice recorder app.

I just uploaded a video and I choose a track from youtube of a 6 minute length: the thing is the video is of 14 minutes length. Do you know how to apply the same track (from youtube) for a longer periode so that it matches your video length and does not stop at minute 6; that is rather frustating

hey there Justin.. thanks for the info about plural eyes.. just looked it up however I dont think it will work with my problem... whats your thoughts on syncing two video sources together when only one has an audio track. The sources are DJI Inspire 2 4k video no audio as its not possible to record audio and a Sony A6500 4k with audio.. I manually sync all the time and its a time headache. Im searching for software that can sync the video timelines together, I would have assumed there should be embedded date/time in the videos to do this but so far no luck, look forward to your thoughts, many thanks, Keith

What if I'm working on a film with multiple takes, which means multiple groups of video and audio files? I need to sync the video/audio clips of take 1, the video/audio clips of take 2, etc - is there an easier way than just syncing the video/audio of take 1 and then again for take 2 etc? If I have 5-6 takes for 2 angles in each scene with 100 scenes... it'll take forever.

Hello. I recorded my band with the zoom Q2n-4K (2 of them). Unfortunately, the format is a .mov and it seems that shotcut doesn't like it. This was my first attempt at using two cameras and was going to use the audio from the direct in on one, and then bounce back and forth from the 2 views throughout the show. The video is about 27G in size and I can't find a converter (for free) to convert it to the Mp4 that shotcut seems to like. Can you help please?

    Aloha Justin!
I shot an improvisational jazz event with 2 Canon AVCHD cameras (wide shot & medium shot).
    ISSUES:
-- Cam1 was setup in the window of the control room of the theatre
-- Cam2 was setup in the theatre
-- Since I was the only camera person, I could not start the cameras at same time or slate/clap them, at the same time.
    -- I shot continuously on Cam1 (9 clips)
-- I had to stop and restart Cam2, twice (11 clips)
-- When I imported the files into PP CC, the files were broken up into clips about 16 min each
-- There is an audible hum (HVAC) in Cam1
    QUESTIONS:
How do I sync up multiple clips from Cam1 and Cam2?
How do I eliminate hum on Cam1?
Are there any other options besides Pluraleyes because I can't afford to buy it now?

    • @PrimalVideo
      @PrimalVideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can definitely sync these clips up manually.. look for the point something happens that you can see in both shots and line them up to the exact frame. Will be a little time consuming at first but once you get the hang of it it won't take too long to get used to it.
To remove the hum, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/dZ0DWNLrToU/w-d-xo.html
