After all this time I see a video of the equipment I used to work on. I was working on the Boston and Maine at the time, Andrew Mellon (Mellon Bank) took over control around 1985, when Ronald Reagan was president and was busting unions throughout the country, and have fond memories of the crews I worked with. I built and reinforced the side boom of that D89 Cat dozer you see there. It had a 40 ton winch behind the operator, we used to drag cars to where we needed them. The "big" hook was a 250 ton over the rail crane that at one time was steam powered and converted to diesel. On a particular wreck on the Putney Vt. curve one year, the wreck master tried to make a move that disabled the crane and sent three of us tumbling down the bank along the Connecticut river. He tried to lift and turn at the same time, We had a loaded 100 ton tank car in the river 80ft below the crane, and it caused the slew gear shaft to snap out of its case. The crane rocked back and forth and knocked all the down hill rigging we were standing next to down to the river. Funny, we all "danced" along all those timbers and stone falling down the embankment, and luckily we never got hurt. I spent a month putting together and welding the case back together and rebuilding the crane. Saved the railroad a lot of money! This crane was built in the 30s? Never did get much thanks from execs! Still nostalgic to see equipment I spent too many coooold winter nights and hooooot summer days on.

Ronald Reagan is the worst thing to happen to unions in this country. He was a union president to boot! Self serving hypocrite.

Looked like a ugly derail, but thrilling to see the old passenger cars. Wasn't one of them an old L&N heavyweight from the steam era?

Too bad they didn't have some commentary to explain what us non-railroaders were seeing, I was impressed by the big machinery, but I had no idea what all I was seeing, were those old baggage cars and passenger cars also?????

ScottyKs the other cars are outfit cars, and are where equipment like chains are stored and where crews live during the clean up.
