    OMG FOUR TO SIX WEEKS THATS IT?! Right now I’m thirteen, I’ve had really horrible acne since I was in early grade four (8 years old)and I’ve been on all sorts of medications like Stevia A, Tactupump, I was on a pill but not birth control, and I’ve most recently been using Tazorac, which irritated my skin MUCH more and dried it out completely. My acne is the worst it’s ever been and I’m going to the doctor tomorrow morning to get birth control pills. It’s been years I’ve been dealing with this problem, and I’m so glad there are people out there that make these things to help people like us💘

    Hi Dr. Yen. Thank you for your video! I have been on birth control pill Sprintec for a couple of years now. My acne got a lot better and I had clear skin until I decided to stop and my acne came back worse then before. I got prescribed Spironolactone and I took it for about a year and it did wonder for my skin, I also got back to taking Sprintec. Due to the side effects, I stopped Spironolactone and I am still taking Sprintec. However, despite being on Sprintec, my acne has come back lately, even though before Sprintec did clear my skin perfectly. Is there a reason Sprintec stopped working and should I go back to taking Spironolactone? Thank you so much!!

    Hi Doctor, I’m going to start a birth control pill or patch as actual BC, but I want to choose the best combination estrogen/progesterone available for controlling acne. I’m in CA, USA, and I’d like something easily dispensed at most drugstore pharmacies. I’ve spoken to Planned Parenthood and I worked as a pharmacy tech at CVS/got accepted to pharmacy school so I am somewhat/barely familiar with the different names/brands of BCs we dispense, but I’m not sure which is the best one for acne. I know a lot of people go on Yaz or Yazmin, and it has worked for them. I’d just like to start the most popular or efficacious BC for acne since I’m 22 and still getting acne. Which BC pill or patch do you generally prescribe for acne? I can go ask my doctor or make another apmt at Planned Parenthood - but the PAs who explain which BC they have told me that they are really only knowledgeable about the specific three BCs Planned Parenthood is able to prescribe and dispense and couldn’t give me any comparison about which BCs are better for preventing birth and for acne which makes me feel like their HCPs aren’t the best to ask about this since they’re only familiar with their 1 pill (I’d never heard of it or seen it dispensed at CVS while I was there, but the name sounded like Shaquille lol), 1 patch (Xulane), and 1 ring (NuvaRing, I believe). 😕

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! We're not sure what you are asking but if you are asking "will my acne come back after I come off the medication" then the answer is: most likely. Whatever is causing the elevated hormone levels (PCOS or puberty) most likely is still there. Though if it is just puberty, then perhaps when you hit 18 - it should be better/gone.
      But if it is PCOS, then you need to treat that with either weight loss if you are overweight. Losing 10% of your weight often will help. Metformin can also help. Please note that these are suggestions only and should not be a substitute for professional advice that you would get from your own doctor.

I'm taking the Yasmin pill for 2 months now (minus a few days). It only got worse and even now my acne is bad. Does this mean anything? I don't know whether I should lose hope or stop taking it. Any idea would help, thank you :D

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If yasmin made your acne worse, then you should probably stop it. See your doctor about other options. Accutane is usually THE best option and some people need 2 or 3 rounds of it. Also, you might want to do some bloodwork to look for other causes of why you have so much acne. And if you haven’t tried it, some people found success with spironolactone.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your doctor can help you determine which brand of pills you can take. While many countries allow women to get birth control over the counter, the United States is not one of them. There are a growing number of states like California, Oregon, Washington, and New Jersey that allow pharmacists to give birth control without a doctor prescription but it's often difficult to find pharmacies that offer them.
      If you don't have a doctor and want to see one of ours online, it's just $39 doctor e-visit and you sign up at www.PandiaHealth.com. If everything on your health questionnaire looks ok, we can recommend a brand and send it to you for free. Hi! Few questions, I was prescribed Taytulla (1 mg or progesterone and 20mcg of estrogen) and I’ve realized that my acne is getting worse, would it be because the progesterone is higher than the estrogen? I usually have bad side effects with high estrogen pills, and I have been diagnosed with PCOS (high testosterone) do I have other options?

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have LOTS of other options. I need to know the exact progesterone. It’s the progesterone that is giving you the acne. There are 7-8 different progesterones. Try a different one. We don’t recommend “low dose” that is we recommend minimum 30 mcg of estrogen. Norgestimate, desogestrel, whatever is in demulen/Zovia are good medications. Drosperinone is also good but you need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you are in California, use our doctors www.pandiahealth.com

    I’ve had acne since I was about 7/8 years old. I’m 27 now. I’ve done the shot, hated it, Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo (generic kind, can’t remember the name) & Velivet. I don’t recall as bad side effects with Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo as I did with Velivet. Velivet left me with awful cramps and headaches. My hormones were awful. I didn’t see much help with acne. I had been off all birth control for a while, and my doctor prescribed the Velivet. I have been off of it for a while now too, and was thinking of going back to Ortho Lo - but am weary because of the negative side effects I experienced. I need a birth control that will prevent pregnancy (obviously) & help my acne. Can you break down the difference between the Ortho Lo & Velivet (generic versions if it matters) & would you recommend I go back to the Ortho Lo, or suggest something else? IUD & implant are out of the question for me personally.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dr. Yen recommends orthocyclen or its generics regular strength - the Lo is not enough estrogen for good bone health. The best for acne is Yasmin and its generics, but you need make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and don’t have any kidney problems. All birth control should be good for acne, but if you had issues with Velivet, then tell your doctor that. Different women respond differently to different medications. Each woman is different. Please note these are suggestions only and not a substitute for the advice you would get from your own doctor.

    Hi Dr. Yen, I am currently on doxycycline mono twice a day for my acne along with a topical treatment, and a prescription face wash. I have been on the antibiotic for around 3-4 months, but my dermatologist is taking me off the oral acne medication. I know staying on antibiotics for long periods of time is not good for the body, because of antibotic resistance and harming healthy cells. I am worried my acne will return to the way it was, because I have read online that antibiotics is a short term treatment and will not help in the long run. Should I consider birth control? I am currently 17 years old. I have been struggling with acne for over a year now, and I am looking for a long-term solution.
    Thank you

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 17 y/o, your acne probably has a strong hormonal component. birth control pills might be very useful. I would recommend a monophasic and skip the placebo week to have a stable hormonal level and prevent acne. You may need to add back the oral antibiotic if you have chest/back acne and the birth control is not enough…long-term - you most likely will “outgrow” your acne - it will go away as you get older and your hormones stabilize.
      Please keep in mind that this is for general information only and not a substitute for professional medical advice that you would get from your doctor.

      Hi, Rodesa! For acne, norgestimate, desogestrel, drosperinone are the BC that cause your sex hormone binding globulin to go up, thus the circulating testosterone to go down and have less acne. However, all birth control pill, patch, ring methods generally help with acne.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest Yasmin unless you are 45 years old or older. Yaz has only 20 mcg of estrogen and is not high enough for your bones. Yasmin might be overkill if you only have blackheads and some oiliness. Yes, it’s only short term until you get through puberty which is the usual cause of acne. Perhaps use some benzoyl peroxide wash and ask for tretinoin cream. And make sure you skip the placebo week. Most women’s acne gets worse around that time, so if you skip that time, then the acne gets better. Watch this th-cam.com/video/GGWYN7pLahU/w-d-xo.html

    Hi! My daughter is 14 and her acne isn’t too bad. She doesn’t have cystic acne or anything. She has fair skin and has marks that her pimples have left. She also has blemishes and redness. Her acne is quite noticeable though. Nothing seems to work to cure it, is it safe for her to go on birth control?

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If she is at least 2 years after her periods started, then she's ok to go on birth control. Nothing is going to "cure" her acne as long as her hormones are raging (until 16 or so) but it can definitely improve/calm it down. benzoyl peroxide wash and topical retinoid (prescription only, ask her doctor) will also help.

      I would say 3 months to 6 months is enough .The pill helps with acne, but some people have VERY strong acne and require oral antibiotics and topical or oral tretinoin. See your doctor/provider for those medications.

    Hi! I'm 16 and had my first period a little over a year ago. Before I got my period, my skin was clear and I had very little to no acne. However right around the time I got it, my skin became worse and worse. I now frequently develop pimples and have red acne spots on my cheeks. I'm assuming this is hormonal acne so I waited for my body to adjust but it's only gotten worse. Could birth control help? How long does it usually take for teenage acne to settle down?

      Yes. going on the birth control pill , patch or ring, could help because the hormones in the pill, patch, ring, decrease the testosterone that your body is making. It would take 1-3 years for your teenage acne to settle down.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your period should come back. It's OK not to have a period if you are on birth control.
      Some women lose their periods on the pills because some pills have low estrogen so very little blood come out or needs to come out.
      As long as you don't feel pregnant, there's nothing to be concerned about. If you think you might be pregnant (missed some pills or something), then take a pregnancy test. And if you have any other health symptoms like weight loss/gain, then you might want to see your doctor and get your thyroid checked out.
      Please keep in mind that this is for general information only and not a substitute for professional medical advice from your own doctor. If you're in California, you can become one of our patients and one of our Pandia Health doctors can provide you the professional medical advice for your specific situation.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. Some women get initial breakouts. Wait 2-3 months. If it doesn’t get better by month 2 or 3, time to switch. For acne, for best results we recommend norgestimate, desogestrel, ethynodiol diacetate, or drosperinone (but you need to drink at least 8 glasses of water/day for this one) as the progestin in your birth control pill.

    Hi! I'm 16 and have acne and have struggled with it since I was 12-13. Is it worth it to go on birth control SIMPLY for the sake of helping with acne? I'm not using it to prevent pregnancy at all, just simply for acne. Is it worth all the other side effects? And what would those other side effects be? Thank you.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! We're sorry to hear that you've been struggling with acne since you were 12-13. Yes you can go on birth control only for acne. Is it worth it and the other side effects? That answer is up to you.
      Keep in mind that everyone is different and side effects will vary from person to person and you can learn more about it through our Side Effects playlist on our channel (2 videos). There's also different formulations of birth control so it could be finding the right birth control for you.
      What's also interesting about your question is that what many people don't know, including our policy makers, is that birth control is used for more than preventing pregnancies. For women who struggle with acne, it's used as an acne medication. For women with PCOS or endometriosis, it's used to alleviate cramps. So when our politicians focuses on pregnancy prevention, they're overlooking the other medical benefits.
      There's an awesome blog post by Dr. Joannie Yeh on this topic, on how we should rename birth control to something else because it's used for more than preventing pregnancies. betamomma.com/2017/08/30/acneheavy-painful-periodscontrol-over-my-life-pills/

    My acne has never been too awful, but what's there is persistent and so frustrating. I'd like to be able to go out in public with no makeup. Is this a good long-term solution? My period isn't regular, so I'm guessing my acne is a result of both imbalanced hormones and the fact that I'm a teen. Why is acne worse for teen girls than grown women? What changes in our bodies for this to happen? And is the hormonal balance why grown women get acne too sometimes? My mom has very light acne sometimes. She also says she is allergic to birth control. Is that possible? Sorry for the overload of questions!

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions! Yes, if your periods are irregular then your hormones are not normalized yet. Depends how long ago your periods started. Usually 2 years after your periods start, they should come normally. You can use the birth control pill, patch, ring to normalize your hormones and help with acne. For some people, the birth control is enough, for others they may need stronger medication for example birth control AND cream and antibiotics.
      It is unlikely your mother is allergic to birth control. the hormones in birth control are “regular women hormones.” perhaps she was allergic to a specific type or a specific brand because of its dyes that it used for its pills.
      Thanks for your questions and please note that this is for general informational purposes only and not used as a substitute for advice that you'd get from your doctor.

    I have always taken my pill as per my doctor instructions to start a new pack the day I get my period. So basically on the third fourth day of the placebo/ sugar pill.
    But recently I stopped for a month taking the pill and got extremely oily and wen back on with only a month break and then I was told by the pharmacist to finish the whole 28 pack then start new one .
    I did this twice and now I been breaking out even though I’m still on the pill. I only did this twice so far and my skin broke out in tiny white heads all over
    I’m now going back to taking it like I did with starting new pack first day of period.
    Did anyone else have this happen? And why am I all of sudden breaking out small pimples ? Is it cause the change in how I took the pills ? Pls help and give advice

      Hi Ana,
      Unfortunately, sometimes the body adapts to the hormones and the acne hormones are stronger than the birth control hormones. You should see a dermatologist or your regular doctor and they can prescribe you medications for acne. If it's really bad, they can prescribe treatments like tretinoin cream, oral antibiotics or Accutane. Please keep in mind these are suggestions and is not a substitute for advice that you would get from your own doctors.

    Please ladies after watching this 2:00 video do not necessarily believe that birth control is the answer to your acne problems. Birth control pills are not for everyone. The effects of birth control pills on a person’s body can range from virtually nothing at all to death. My 20 year old daughter passed away in September of 2018 due to blood clots in her lungs that were triggered by her use of a combination birth control pill. Yes a combination birth control pill, the type that is being suggested for use in this video. Before considering going on birth control for any reason, please learn as much as possible about your maternal and paternal family medical history. Certain underlying genetic conditions can be triggered by the estrogen that’s in the combination birth control pills. The triggering of these conditions can lead to serious illnesses or sadly as in my daughter’s case even death. The medical community will say that what happened to my daughter was extremely rare and that most women do fine on the birth control pill. That may be true, but certain types of birth control can be very dangerous for some women. If you have a family history of blood clots or cardiovascular disease be very cautious about using birth control that contains estrogen. I hate to sound morbid but to learn more about some of the tragedies involving the use of birth control please Google “birth control pills blood clots death”. By the way, the combination pill did give my daughter beautiful, radiant skin. Her skin was even beautiful and radiant at the time she took her last breath in the hospital bed. Please ladies do not feel obligated to blindly accept the advice given to you in this video, nor by your health care provider nor for that matter even the information that I have provided. However please do these things: please be careful, please be safe, and please become informed. It’s your health and possibly your life that’s at stake, not mine, not the presenter in this video, not the pharmaceutical industry, and not the medical community.

    • @PandiaHealth
      @PandiaHealth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Mr. Williams, we are so sorry to hear about what happened to your daughter. Definitely, ask your parents about your family history of blood clots and if you have any symptoms of blood clots while on birth control, STOP immediately, go to the ER and tell them you are on the birth control pill. The symptoms to look out for are: ACHES: abdominal pain, chest pain/shortness of breath, headache (different from your usual headache), changes in vision (e = eyes), swelling of 1 leg. And if you are 35 AND a smoker, then birth control pills put you at higher risk for clots.

    • @aw8119
      @aw8119 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pandia Health those are all very good suggestions. Thank you so much for providing this valuable information. Young ladies should also be aware of persistent back pain. Many young women who have blood clots complain of back pain but the medical community typically does not recognize that as a symptom. That is just one of many things that we are working on changing. Also when young ladies do report to the ER it is absolutely crucial that they tell everyone that they come into contact with the type and name of birth control that they are using. Young ladies will also have to be extremely persistent because many times the ER will not conduct the testing necessary to determine whether or not a blood clot is present. Far too many young women who present to the ER with blood clots are misdiagnosed. Many are diagnosed with muscle strains and prescribed muscle relaxants and others are diagnosed with lung infections and prescribed antibiotics. For that matter far too many people in general who report to the ER with blood clots are misdiagnosed. This in part explains why the National Blood Clot Alliance reports that 274 people die each day from blood clots. Proper testing and proper diagnosis could possibly prevent many of these deaths. For a perfect example of just how persistent you will need to be, the internet has an abundance of information on the ordeal that Serena Williams had to endure regarding this same issue when she was in the hospital after delivering her baby. Keep in mind that Ms. Williams had a prior history of blood clots and she had just delivered a baby. Both of these conditions should have altered her medical providers to be prepared for the possibility of blood clots. However Ms. Williams’s medical team was initially reluctant to perform a CT-scan on her which would have detected the presence of blood clots. After her insistence, the medical team eventually acquiesced and discovered several blood clots in Ms. Williams. It is imperative that we educate ourselves on the symptoms of a variety of medical conditions and become strong health care advocates for ourselves and our loved ones. The medical community cannot do it alone. The human body is far too complex. Relying exclusively on the medical community could prove to be a deadly mistake.

      Hi Eunice, we can help you if you live in California and we can do everything all online. We actually have a video called "How Pandia Health works" but basically it's this:
      All you would need to do is go to www.PandiaHealth.com and click on "Sign Up" where you fill out a health questionnaire. You'll need to upload a selfie and a picture of a government-issued ID like a drivers license so we can verify you are who you are.
      One of our doctors will evaluate your health questionnaire to make sure it's safe and to understand things like why you broke out before. If we have questions, we'll follow up by text or email. We don't do video conferencing because women are often times in a public place and might not be comfortable answering questions in public. The cost of the doctor evaluation is $39 and is not covered by insurance.
      Once you have a prescription, we can mail your birth control to you for free. The birth control is covered by most insurance companies and if you don't have insurance, you can pay for them with a credit card.
      If you have friends who already have a doctor prescription, they can actually transfer it over to us for free and get the free delivery too. They would need to sign up and tell us they already have a doctor prescription. No $39 charge for this at all.
      We will be expanding to other states by the end of 2018 so follow us on Facebook for updates and announcements if we're not in your state!

      Dermatologists are skin specialist doctors. Dermatologists who have created over the counter products like ProActiv, etc, will tell you, if you have access to a doctor who can write you prescription grade acne medication, take that option. But if your acne is relatively mild, then over the counter stuff like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, tea tree oil, etc may be good enough.

      Yes. with the Lo Lo, you don’t have enough estrogen to have a withdrawal bleed aka period. We don’t recommend anything less than 30mcg of estrogen because it is NOT good for your bones. So please do consider going to regular dose for your bones.. or at least make sure you get 1200 mg Calcium each day and 2000 IU of Vit D each day.

    I recently changed my birth control (I was on for 5 years) due to my migraine issues two month ago, but I start having really bad acne I’ve never had from last birth control pills. It huge, red, and hurts so bad. One of the biggest one is right under my mouth so I’m having hard time opening mouth too. I wish I could go back to old birth control so my acne gets better. Is this because of the new birth control? Or just because my body is still trying to get used to it? Because I’m scared if I’m gonna keep having this acne problem with this pills...

      Hi! So, if you have migraines with aura or any focal neurologic symptoms, it is NOT safe to be on “regular birth control” pills. Instead, you should only be on Progesterone Only Pills or IUD with hormone, copper IUD, implant or shot. Yes, the acne might be due to the new pills. You can give it 1-2 months to see if it gets better. If not, see your doctor. Hope this helped!
