      @G M multicultural is good look at the United States of America. They are the number 1 super power in the world and they have soo many cultures and that’s what makes it a great country. Even though it has its problems with blacks and minorities. It’s still great to have multicultural. So that humanity and any country will have diversity and not just one cultural or race!

      Josiah, where 18 percent comes from? On Wikipedia
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2016
      46 for Trump, 48 for Clinton
      If you mean that many eligible voters didn't vote at all -- who's fault is that? Let me put it differently: half of the population that cares about politics voted for Trump. If you do not bother to vote - you should not be taken into account when it goes to stuff like overtone window

    • @dmitry5319
      @dmitry5319 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josiah - this number (18%) does not represent anything. Out of 326 mln only 215 mln were eligible to vote. Do you count the rest as Clinton supporters? Out of 215 mln only 128 mln did actually vote. Do you also count those who didn't for Clinton? If people didn't vote, you cannot know their political position, so they do not count for "overtone window"

      I would agree that European countries are slightly more to the left on average than US (I lived for some time in UK, Germany and Belgium). But you completely ignore the rest of the world (I mean everything except Commonwealth countries, Europe and to some extent South Korea and Japan), which makes may be 80 percent of the Earth's population. On this larger scale even Trump is extreme left.

    The "Overton Window" was dragged way to the right long ago. Otherwise, by the logic of that own theory, how would he have gotten elected? Such a radical person as Trump would have had to have been normalized in the eyes of the voters, he couldn't just come in from out of the blue, completely off the scale, and win. Isn't that the whole theory?

    • @TheKiroshi
      @TheKiroshi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The election isn't entirely apart of the mass public. The Overton Window is exactly just that.. The mass public's opinion.
      America has the electoral college.. No majority vote needed, the populace vote counts for little, has only 2 major parties, has an insanely high paywall to even try to run and has an insanely high media budget.
      The overton window theory wouldn't effect who gets elected, Because who gets elected, isn't up to the country's opinion.

  • @madalheidis

    From my recent foray into figuring out my political ideals, and remembering this video, I’ve found I would probably be a centrist in my own country, but in America, I would be considered a left wing, even before Trump. The overton window has already moved from various other nation’s ideas of democracy and Trump’s made it worse. The cold war already made you very anti-left. From my perspective, the modern U.S. is equal to the U.S.S.R, not in military power, but from how I see the two countries, oppressive hellholes. There is a meme somewhere that fits this. A Star Wars: Episode III one. “You became the very thing you swore to destroy.” I feel it fits.

      It's not necessarily the elites' fault in this case. The shifting perspective of "normal" is something people do automatically when presented with extreme views, politicians just know how to use it to influence us. And fighting against this effect isn't necessarily in anyone's interest either, because the effect works to shift opinion and normalize whatever an individual thinks is "good" as much as it can normalize "bad." Knowing about it could help a person resist its effects to control for their own biases, but the Overton Window, itself, isn't necessarily a universally good or bad thing.

    I don't know why everyone is complaining of what is a true statement (and even positive statement for conservatives): America has been shifting right since the 80s thanks to Reaganism. The whole reason for the New Democrat Coalition, a coalition of "centrist" (read more right-leaning) democrats, was to win votes again from a larger conservative voting base. With every successive conservative President, the American political scale shifts further right and the "centrist" media personalities Carlos refers to, are a continuation of that trend.
