I love how Peter and Matthew argued at the fire, and now Jesus in between them being that bridge for both of them at the fire. Best part He is the all consuming fire
I think putting Matthew on the spectrum made everyone super sympathetic to him. They made it seem like his actions were because he didn’t understand what he was doing, as if his being autistic means he isn’t responsible for his actions. Even going back to that scene with Matthew just feeling the bag and saying how much Andrew was short is portrayed as it could be just that Matthew is so smart that he just knows rather than he was cheating them. I’m glad that they made it more clear that Matthew was not innocent, and made Simon Peter’s continued dislike of Matthew more understandable. It makes the payoff at the end so much more satisfying and emotional.
This story line wrecks me. I have been lead to forgiveness in the last year but I feel like I am struggling like Peter. 16 years ago, yes I said 16 years ago, my church and those I thought were friends turned away from me when i divorced. I felt so betrayed especially since the people had said in so many words that they would not leave me. The church stripped me of all the committees was on. I continued to go to church but had to leave as watching these people surround and support my ex with no concern for me or their promise to me. I feel like I have been lead to forgiveness but I will never get an apology for their behavior. But still I am called to forgive. Picture me walking away from a conversation with Jesus angrily throwing sticks into the night. I sobbed through this whole story line. Praying for the strength of Christ to work through this situation.😢
Maybe you are struggling more like Matthew. Maybe it is you who needs to apologize? Maybe you need to repent. After all it is clear in all 4 Gospels that divorce is not Jesus' way. I apologize for my abruptness, but I am autistic like Matthew.
I see the additional time Jesus spends with Matthew not as Him being closer to Matthew than the others, but time for instruction that Matthew needs. Jesus’ time with his inner circle is illustrated as being intimate - He makes them part of situations the other nine aren’t.

This episode was so awesome. Seeing Peter hugging Matthew was so powerful. Forgiveness is the best thing to do. Amazing video Brandon. Great job explaining this video.
I dont agree. Each had a different calling, a mission needed that they were meant for. The writers would of course have their private moments in history, the rest would be missing, as no record was kept, and they acted on it and achieved what their calling was. The 9, did missions of voice of action needed to be recorded for US, the rest stirring the moments and driving the people towards the rest, I would gladly be forgotten in written words to be remembered by our lord in heaven. We don't see everything. We see what the writers tell us, and the writers weren't alwats there, we can only see one angle, don't forget the lord sees all, and to be sent on a mission by the lord himself, wow, they were just as close and just as important. I feel it's the same now, we all have our mission and purpose, and some will be seen and others will not, but in the end, we are all the same and just as close if that is what we work towards and follow as instructed. Every evil done in my life , to or by me, up until the moment I truly cried out, is now a tool the lord can use to make me useful to him. Matthew, all his sins , built the path for Peter, the lord is amazing, more then lol, even our wrong doings in our dark times, serve HIM. Truly every knee will bow, every tongue will declare, he is king, lord, and title after title, and I love him so.
I agree. More time spent does not equal degree of closeness. However, I am missing seeing John laying his head in Jesus’s chest and the deep connection between all four of them.
As a man I don't cry often but watching this show and remembering to forgive people is now been easier for me as my landlady Della is also returned to her Bible as I have as well
Its funny you say that because when me and my Mrs were watching it, Peter came and Spoke to Jesus, and I told her, THAT is real prayer. They showed that scene to perfectly setup what its like to talk to him alone. And regardless of the conversation, that is prayer because we're talking to God directly
I love how forgiveness is being portrayed as a two way street in this episode. Asking and giving are equally important. Both parties have to be humble enough to receive what the other is giving
This episode was so incredibly powerful. Peter's relationship with Matthew sort of exhibits what Jesus saw in him because even while still haboring resentment again Matthew Peter still looked out for him (while they searched for Mary and when Matthew was sent out with Z).
I really liked this episode. Especially this part between Peter and Mathew. The hardest problem I’m having with this season so far is the recast of Philip who is now a completely different character. The sense of humor and ease that was established with Yoshi is gone.
Yes but the personality is so bland its two different people, not like when they swapped out big James. It's very jarring and makes us feel the change. However, I had said that I had noticed that the original Phillip was getting a little too familiar with "Jesus" in his portrayal which I felt was off so I felt that was part of the reason for the change. But this Phillip is a bit too low keyed for my liking. However, it is what it is
I wholly agree with you except for when you said original Phillip was getting a little too familiar with Jesus. Please explain how or where you saw that happening. I've watched all the previous seasons many times and I like to know what made you feel that way. I mean, Yoshi didn't write his script. Nothing against the new Phillip but Yoshi's Phillip won me over and I miss his presence among the rest of the apostles.
Love how getting to reconciliation kinda started with each man coming away (to pray) to be with Jesus ❤ Lord, help us to pray more and to be obedient when You speak to us
Great video on a great episode. Seeing the struggle both Matthew and Simon (Peter) had to come to a point of forgiveness was a long time coming but so worth the weight. I remember being really troubled after S02E03 where Simon lashes out at Matthew over the camp fire but it was all part of this beautiful moment in the story.
I LOVE your analysis and commentary on The Chosen. My all time favourite series. I came to Christ through AA and I’m on Step 9 - making amends. So this episode and in particular this scene with Jesus and Matthew, hit me hard. Thank you for all you do! 10:22
I came back to Jesus as result of AA so glad for the chosen which made it all become clearer. So grateful and now we're sleuths too. That's awesome. God is so good
I saw this episode. Was little confused. But yes I remember parts of my Bible teachings. After being hit with construction ball in head and had 3 brain surgeries. God kept me alive for some reason.
As soon as I saw this seen in theaters, I’ve been wanting to see it again! People don’t understand forgiveness and it’s power in their lives ; (mental health, relationships, self-image, ect.).
I love how Jesus taught Matthew how to say sorry. A lot of people will say I’m sorry “if” I hurt you or offended you,”but” and then they will continue with excuses to defend themselves over what they did. That’s not a real apology and Matthew does understand that, in fact, he even says you don’t owe me forgiveness, but I am sorry for what I did.
It's so great to know God uses faulty people to do such great things! David, Paul, the desciples, Mary, each one of us! I love the song, "When Others See A Shepherd Boy, God May See A King!" And He loved us before we ever knew Him! ❤
Definitely my favorite episode of the series! And the point of forgiveness is the climax, even over the ending scene with Gaius and Jesus. I've always appreciated your teaching even though I know much of the scriptural teaching. But I love the way you teach. I love your humor and your laugh. And I don't always catch the artistic side of Dallas's direction. Like your observation of Jesus at the fire and Matthew and Peter on opposite sides - I never caught that. I love those insights of yours. This is why I always come back to your videos. And I agree the show emphasizes much more time between Jesus and Matthew than the Gospels do.
I don’t think the Chosen is trying to make Matthew necessarily one of the “inner circle” but it seems there are moments with each person ( and I surmise, though it is not shown) has moments where Jesus addresses deep felt needs in their individual lives. ❤
I struggled with forgiveness for a small period in my life in college under circumstances where people deeply hurt me. But I finally forgave after some time. This episode especially the ending brought to weeping in the theater. More so than the third episode actually….
Forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors. Peter was reminded how his debts were "forgiven" thanks to God's help with the fish. We need these clear examples to help us with forgiving; and it is always worth the effort.
God is so good. Using the Chosen to make me think about my life and my shortcomings and my attitude in life. It really causes me to repent for my sins. I'm so grateful to Almighty God
Speaking about forgiveness, I myself do not know how to forgive, or what that even looks like practically, I can say I forgive but I live my life as tho I haven’t forgiven because I still hold on to all the negativity, I still live in fear, growing up the world hurt me, and I hid and I have remained hidden for a very very long time. Now I feel God calling out to me to come out and forgive. But I don’t know how, I can’t even look up, I’m terrified of the world and just want to stay hidden. So I ask God how do I forgive how do I reach my hand back out into the world.
It brings out he spent time with each one of the 12 And he spends time watching everything even now Each one has a choice to personal faith pulse check Looking at where you are now Where a year ago? Healthy or not, need improvement or not Of course everyone is needing to improvement But with certain people, places,or things habits Even dress for healthy ways when it's possible 10:57 ❤
I loved loved loved this episode, but Matthew has all my favorite characters. The words of Jesus told Matthew I wrote him down and the share of them beautiful episode.
Thank you Brandon for your comments on this segment. This is my favorite part of the Chosen so far except for the interchange between Matthew and his parents. I have to say, though, that your narrative on it all is very close to as important as the scenes themselves. It was so much better than anything I have heard coming from a pulpit. Thank you my brother for allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through you. The heart of the gospel, for sure.
16:50 The Sermon on the mount from a theological standpoint is the biggest. It is in this sermon in which the beatitudes are given. There may have been more people at the feeding of the 5000 but you can see the impact the Sermon on the Mount had on his followers... Matthew went out and implemented them immediately. In the old testament the term "Father" is used to refer to God 17 times, and in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus refers to God as "Father" 17 times. Jesus is summing up the scriptures all in one sermon and clarifying the Law of Moses as only God can do. This is massive -as massive as the entire history of Israel.
In the sneak peek videos of s 5 you see Peter saying this parable and hesitating, I think you must have forgot, because you Said you can't understand why he's choked up. This seems to be the reason. He finally put the parable together himself in his mind.
This episode is one of the of the most controversial so far. This is a very catholic way of reading Matthew 16:18. The thing is when you ready what Peter’s name is in the Greek it is a pebble like one found on the path. It was the confession of who Jesus (the cornerstone- Ephesians 2:20-22) That is called the petra (mass connected rock).
The episode is called "Confessions". I appreciate how it is illustrated in these scenes (like the Catholic confessional) -- through the writing and through Jonathan Roumie's nuanced demeanor -- how Jesus Christ interacts with each personality individual and apart from one another,. Not just here with Matthew and Simon Peter which is the most overt example, but also with the other apostles (Mary, Ramah and the Blessed Mother too) throughout all the episodes and seasons. How He is so very personal, so very patient, prodding just enough and stepping away, in wait for us, imperfect humankind, to figure it out we can eventually grow INTO and THROUGH our imperfections and human nature - with ego and attachments to what we think is right - to come closer to GOD. It is only possible to reach that understanding and wisdom for us little children with the divinity/humanity of Christ: The Word made FLESH, The Logos, The Way.
That is an insulting comment to make that implies spectrum individuals (neuro atypical) are all “needy. What a biased, and incorrect, and, uninformed comment.
@@karisbellisario619 I didn't read that comment as implying Matthew was 'needy'..Matthew has a lot of questions. He processes information in a complex way. He can sometimes be very literal and not understand what people mean. Sometimes he needs clarification. Jesus knows him and what he needs and responds to him as an individual . Jesus treats everyone according to their unique personality and needs. He doesn't deal with us all in the same way cause we are all different. I took it that's what this comment was about, not saying there was something faulty about Matthew. Also, because Matthew was a scribe perhaps the writers are portraying Jesus taking extra time with Matthew so that he can clearly communicate the facts when he writes his gospel account.
I am disabled nit on the spectrum but disabled nevertheless. I learn and grasp things differently the those who don't have my disability I it dosent mean I am needy but that my needs are different no blane or shame in that
Brandon, I think that Peter decided to forgive Matthew when he stopped to think...then he gave a slight nod to himself. He had this determined look on his face that he was going to walk up to Matthew and forgive him
I just wanna say that The Chosen choice to visually remind us of how Simon Peter was forgiven was a great plan in reminding us all to forgive (and ask for forgiveness) just as The Father has forgiven us without Jesus reciting the parable directly from Scripture. I believe it was an adequate visual representation not substitute. I also thought of the 'Lord's Prayer' that Jesus taught His disciples and how both Matthew and Simon Peter live it and do it here. Lord, help us to be doers of The Word and not just hearers only. AMEN Thank you for remind us, Brandon, of the parable in Scripture!!
Another wonderful deep dive. I did miss the interview with Paras and Shahar that you referred to (at 28:02ish). So I went to find it. I can't find that video. Any chance you could direct me where to look. (I've searched youtube, looked on the special features on the ap., did a web search.) I would greatly appreciate and help finding it. :) Thank you very much. And of course, may the Lord guide you, give you wisdom, provision, revelation, increase your faith and bless your relationships. In joy, Justyn
I didnt get the impression that he stole from people outright or by skimming. The occupied would have considered taxes itself as stealing, probably because it was exhorbitent and because Rome ruled with an iron fist. And Matthew was paid ultimately with taxpayer funds. The weighing by feeling the weight of the coins I interpreted as a rainman type skill since he is on the spectrum.
Loved how Jesus walked Matthew back to what he did to Peter and so many other tax paying Jewish citizens instead of Matthew dismissing it or making excuses. Jesus made Matthew gave the truth about himself. I absolutely loved this scene. "He desires truth in the inward parts".
Another thing this illustrated was Gods perfect timing. If Matthew hadn't scr*wed Simon and Andrew, Simon wouldn't have been fishing on Shabbat and might not have met Jesus.
I'm not sure the timing is off... Matthew isn't talking as much about when he joined the group as he's talking about the sermon on the mount and how it convicted him to apologize to his parents. So, the question is the amount of time from the Sermon which was Season 2: E 8, and Season 3: E 1 to Season 4. So, about a year plus a little may not be that far off.
I am one of the people who thought Matthew was so cute that I couldn’t imagine him doing anything wrong, although my common sense told me he must have. However, there are hints that Simon Peter wasn’t exactly innocent either, since he used to spend time gambling and hanging out at the at Hammer. But I did wonder if Matthew got any of the spoils from the fish miracle. And he must have, because the debt was also owed to Matthew, right? I really love your analysis of all these episodes, and this was one of your best.
This episode has hit home for me. I have issues with my ex husband. It’s a complicated situation. Can’t get into it. But have issues like this where I am at the point to just be cordial and get along. At one time I was horrible to him like how Peter was with Andrew. So became comfortable just being cordial and polite talking and not really forgiving him so there are times I want to lay into him like season 2 ep 3 where Peter gives it to Mathew. So I need to forgive. With out a doubt I need to forgive. I hope to get to that place where my heart is truly ready. It’s taking a long long time
I love how Peter and Matthew argued at the fire, and now Jesus in between them being that bridge for both of them at the fire. Best part He is the all consuming fire
Ryan 🙏💯... "HE is the All Consuming Fire" ... So so good‼️🥰🥰
Oh, just let it go. It's a show
I think putting Matthew on the spectrum made everyone super sympathetic to him. The hardest problem I’m having with this season so far is the recast of Philip who is now a completely different character. The sense of humor and ease that was established with Yoshi is gone.

In the sneak peek videos of s 5 you see Peter saying this parable and hesitating, I think you must have forgot, because you Said you can't understand why he's choked up. This seems to be the reason. He finally put the parable together himself in his mind.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I understand that a year has passed since the Sermon on the Mount.
Della W. Here. That scene where Simon peter shows a temper that was me
This episode is one of the of the most controversial so far.
I don't think that Mathew is closer to Jesus, I think that because he is portrayed as being on the spectrum, he needs more attention to understand
It’s fantasy to say Matthew had any issues mentally or whatever. Bit off scripture.
I learn and grasp things differently the those who don't have my disability I it dosent mean I am needy but that my needs are different no blane or shame in that
@@paddyc9653 To be fair, Dallas said from the very beginning that they take some artistic license. It's still very Biblical, though.
Sermon on the mount WAS the BIG one. Where Jesus taught what it is to follow him, Lords prayer etc.......caused Andrew to apologize to Mary also
Beautifully acted and your break down was so helpful too! Thank you.
I love this scene. Especially what Jesus say
AMEN
Thank you for remind us, Brandon, of the parable in Scripture!!
Another wonderful deep dive. I did miss the interview with Paras and Shahar that you referred to (at 28:02ish). So I went to find it. I can't find that video. Any chance you could direct me where to look. (I've searched youtube, looked on the special features on the ap., did a web search.)
I would greatly appreciate and help finding it.
:) Thank you very much.
And of course, may the Lord guide you, give you wisdom, provision, revelation, increase your faith and bless your relationships.
In joy, Justyn
Great video!
Freedom in Forgiveness...that could be a sermon title
Love these personnel moments. Della W.
I wonder if he will keep it going with the lives of the disciples and the growth of his ministry after these seven seasons? I hope so!
Matthew also owed Andrew an apology, I am baffled that they did not include that.
Love this scene. Peter needed time to consider it all.
Awesome
I really had no idea Mathew really stole from his people. You are completely right!
Thank you Brandon 🙏🏼
I didnt get the impression that he stole from people outright or by skimming. The occupied would have considered taxes itself as stealing, probably because it was exhorbitent and because Rome ruled with an iron fist. And Matthew was paid ultimately with taxpayer funds.
The weighing by feeling the weight of the coins I interpreted as a rainman type skill since he is on the spectrum.
Ero sicura che lo avrebbe abbracciato tt si sbaglia nella vita umana ❤😢
He probably means over a year since the sermon where his eyes were open to his sin

The chosen uses Jesus with Matthew to establish some scriptures. I think we will see the development of John’s relationship with Jesus in the future.
PS I can’t wait for tonight’s live stream episode. S4 E3. Then your review. 🎉🎉
It’s taking a long long time
And Matthew doesn't likecto be touched
To be able to have a two way conversation with Jesus and to have him bend down and kiss you on the forehead.
I would just ask to remember view what the keys means in the old Testament. You may disagree, but the Bible does provide why Peter has the keys.
Jesus can look right through you
