    I love that Matthew is confident enough to confront Judas about the money in the purse and that he does not just drop the subject when Judas comes back at him. There is a strength in Matthew that was not there before.
    Whenever there is an interaction between Jesus and Judas I go back to the scene after the Sermon on the Mount, when Judas is asking to follow Jesus and Jesus asks Judas if he is ready to "do hard things" (I think really asking if Judas would be able to submit to Jesus) Judas says yes and Jesus' response is "we'll see". Watching this play out makes me question my own motives sometimes.

    I have definitely been there too. Now I see why I've been beating my head on the wall... I should just be spending time paying attention to what Jesus is doing and saying, sitting at His feet. Instead, I've been churning my guts trying to think of what good works I should be doing, how to evangelise my un-believing friends and family, and on and on. All I do is fail. This Season and esp this Episode have been an eye-opener. Thanks for your insights, Brandon. 😊

      Judas-"He asked me to keep the purse."
      Simon Z-"Then keep the purse."
      That was so convicting to me due to being called right now to just help my family because of chronic illness. I just need to do that and encourage my friends since that's what He's calling me to do right now.

    Matthew has grown up a lot since season 1. He knows how much is missing by the weight of the bag. My twin grandsons are on the Spectrum, and they are very good in math. I went to school on parent day Friday with one of them because my daughter couldn't get off work to go. The teacher handed them a paper and told them to write how many ways they could add or subtract to get this answer. Liam looked at it and wrote 12 times, then wrote the problems. I would have to sit and think before writing. He had it done in less than 2 minutes and handed it to his teacher. Never look at a child with a disability and think they can't learn. You will be surprised what they can do. Judas doesn't understand what Jesus wants or needs. He is just doing things his way and how it He thinks it should be done. Instead of listening to Jesus and the others.

    I love that scene with Judas and Matthew! This might be a stretch, but I love how after Judas goes off alone, Peter, Big James, and everyone come out and take Matthew into town with them. I think that further illustrates just how isolated Judas is from Jesus and the rest of the group and how Matthew is more part of the group and closer with the other apostles and Jesus. Big James pat Matthew on the back, but Matthew didn’t flinch a bit. Again, might be a bit of a stretch.

    The way they humanize these Biblical figures is truly incredible. Making Judas almost relatable when he's always been the villain of the gospels. I want to see how they practically and "logically" explain why Judas took the silver to betray Jesus.

    • @charlottelauzon3147
      @charlottelauzon3147 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I agree. Judas thought he was doing to right thing to bring about the kingdom through his own perspective though. Biblically the 30 pieces of silver was the cost of the purchase of a slave ironically. In Philippians 2:6-8 Who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

      I think this is a good way to show that good and evil isn't just black and white. A person doesn't just suddenly become evil, but is gradually corrupt that you can't tell where it was that the exact point they turned was.

      What's important to remember is that Judas didn't believe according to Scripture. It's why he couldn't be saved. In The Chosen, they make Judas an over-zealous believer (he believes Jesus is the messiah, he believes the miracles, he believes the resurrection) and it's starting to worry me that it can lead many believers to doubt their Salvation assuming it's not enough to just believe. I don't know what Dallas' stance is on eternal security but I hope he's not into lordship salvation or calvinism.

    • @charlottelauzon3147
      @charlottelauzon3147 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@gethsemane-777 I tend to disagree that Judas didn’t believe. I think he did at first as in Luke 9:1 Jesus sent them out to cure the sick and cast out demons. To be given that power, they would have had to have a good amount of belief in order to do the mission. I think his belief changed over time with his own ambitions. Scripture does tell us that he had remorse after the betrayal and returned the money. His remorse didn’t lead to repentance that we know of right before death, scripture doesn’t state that. I think all the disciples have a character element in humanness that we can identify with and also a resolution found in Jesus. Judas serves as a reminder of what not to do.

    • @gethsemane-777
      @gethsemane-777 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@charlottelauzon3147 hi Charlotte, I hope you're having a great week-end. Here's a verse about Judas.
      JOHN 6:64
      But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
      Disciples of Jesus weren't saved because they followed him or because they cast out demons. They were saved the same way as everyone from Genesis to Revelation: by believing the Good News. There is no other ways to be saved. Judas never believed despite the wonderful works he did when he was under Jesus' ministry.
      MATTHEW 7:21
      “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
      Those saying "Lord, Lord" are those trusting in their works and rejecting the Good News.
      I won't accuse The Chosen without knowing their whole depiction of Judas in the next episodes but the current segments can lead to a false representation of Judas. Judas shouldn't be used as the representation of believers losing their salvation due to bad choices, because Judas wasn't a believer in the first place. The moment one believes the Good News they are saved forever, sealed by the Holy Spirit. My point is that the show could bring unnecessary fear to already saved Christians.

    Technically, Judas can definitely go back, he just has to explain to the other apostles the reason for the missing money, that he wants to save it for Jesus' ministry in a rainy day. That's understandable and wouldn't make him look bad. But of course it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't understand Jesus' teachings. I think it's great that Simon Z, a trained fighter and zealot, and the one who should have the most problems with Jesus' approach, is one of the most devoted of the apostles. He questions Jesus' teachings the least.

The whole Judas thing is so expertly done I’m so happy at how the Chosen is portraying him I’ve always thought he believed his way was the best way forward and that if he pushed hard enough Jesus would rise up and destroy the romans etc ! what a tragedy that he totally missed the point as Simon z tried to explain and the tragedy of what’s to come the suiside and the fact that three days later if he’d waited and seen the resurrection he could have repented and explained his self and maybe not become the most reviled person in human history

This whole deep dive filled me with feelings of anxiety, worried that something like that could be where I'm heading or maybe I'm deceiving myself somehow and I will end up like that, which is a terrifying thought! So I had to go pray and quote scriptures and read some as well. I know it is a dangerous thing to follow God "afar off" as Peter did the night he denied Jesus three times.

    I think what Judas said was trying to misdirect Matthew into thinking that someone took the money, but it wasn't him. He's basically telling Matthew that "we can't be losing money because this mission is too important" so Matthew won't think that Judas is behind it, casting suspicion on the others.

    I was able to read some Hebrew words on the map Judas is looking at. Top right, by the mountain range, it reads: Decapolis. Inside the Dead Sea, it reads: "Yam Hamelech" (The Sea of the King). Just left of the Dead Sea, the cluster of towns from the top has the words: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Bethany.

    I like this characterization of Judas a great deal. I think we all can relate to him. I know I can. It shows you that Judas must have been a likeable guy. How else would the disciples not know till the end who is the betrayer. He is well-meaning but naive and proud, the very qualities that Satan can use to deceive. You bend away from the righteousness of God just a little bit and then, down the road, you end up doing something far worse than you would have imagined. When you see the consequence of these bad decisions, it is maybe too late to turn it around. In many cases, it is.
    So Judas ends up rationalizing his stealing and having his own private agenda and then has to lie to cover it up. He addsi insult to injury. This is all because he really doesn't get Who and What is Jesus: God and the Messiah of the world. And the saddest thing for me about Judas is that even after all he did, Jesus would have forgiven him. Instead, he hangs himself as Satan would want. A lesson for us all.

    I think Judas believes that Jesus is The Messiah. His perspective is scewed, unfortunately. Since Jesus is who He says He is, then why does he think Jesus needs money. He doesnt need it to travel, He can walk anywhere, mind you across water if necessary, He can heal with His words without being physically present, and He can multiply food. He doesn't NEED money, Judas. 😅
    Why do we find it so hard to trust God for what we need, too? Why do we get so distracyed by the things and systems of this world that we forget that our Father owns it all, knows what we need because He created us to need them, and wants to give us what we need because He loves us so much? He also wants us to look to Him to be the source of provision, not our own hands or minds or resources. Help us to get it right, Jesus. Have mercy on us.

    This is where sanctification does its work in us. As we listen to the Holy Spirits, read the word, and have.prayer time, we grow spiritually. This of course takes a lot of study. In MOHU (MIDNIGHT OIL & the HOLY SPIRIT.) But if we keep our hearts attuned to Him and take fewer detours, it will come in less time, I fear that some of people in today's church are taking to many detours.
    I am 81 years old, and speak from experience. I obey things much better now than I used to. I have been like Judas and thought may way was better, but God picked me by those short hairs on the back of my neck and set me on the path again. It was painful, but he had the right to do much worse. Some of my ideas lead us to having to walk through valleys, some deeper than others, as teaching moments. I do thank Him for those valleys, though. It was there I learned so much.
    We all have at times think.ours is a better plan than God's, That's when we better watch out. I prayerfully ask myself the question now, "Is it my idea or God's idea?

      Or a nod to the fact that Romans often used pig leather for their apparel? Which would, of course, be abhorrent to faithful Jews. The Chosen writers often use such subtle references that it's hard to tell.
      Regarding Judas, I think the casting of Luke Dimyan - with his big blue eyes and innocent baby-face looks - is just perfect. I've always imagined him looking like a dark, mustache-twirling villain. The script writing and Luke's portrayal almost force me to think about Judas a bit differently.

Judas still doesn't get that here.

    I think Judas is searching for purpose. He recognizes his God-given gift, but that doesn't mean that was the only one he was blessed with. In the show, maybe it was the only one cultivated because of his orphanhood and apprenticeship woth Hadad. Maybe if he listened to Jesus' teachings more and leaned less on his own understanding, he would have discovered a greater purpose than helping the religious leaders arrest Jesus. Still, we know the will of The Father had to be done. If it wasn't him, maybe it would have been another disciple. Only God knows.
