Lord Funface The Atomic Toaster The line, "I just wanted to go into space!" is a line that basically everyone hated from the end of Yahtzee's other game, "7 Days a Skeptic." Yahtzee thought it was a cool plot twist, but he's been mocked mercilessly for it and now it's a big source of embarrassment for him.
I think Yahtzee's descriptions of the three aliens at around 4 minutes in are all better ideas for characters than I'll ever hope to have. Especially "Humanoid who for no adequately explored reason is invisible except for his eyebrows."

Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment (GFW in short) is one of the best freeware adventure games ever made, period. Aside from superb humor, entertaining plot, and fun puzzles, Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw has succeeded in melding cross-genre elements that made games like Star Control so endearing. GFW is the first freeware adventure game in memory that can truly be called a "space opera" in the best sense of Star Control: you will explore one small but well-populated corner of the universe, trade goods between star systems to make money, update your weapons and other spacecraft systems, fight other spacecrafts in cool space battles (albeit with a simplistic interface), survive or play a number of arcade sequences or mini-games - all this while solving traditional inventory-based puzzles. What more can you ask for in a game? Plot-wise, you can expect the same quality of writing seen in Yahtzee's previous games: particularly his Rob Blanc trilogy, of which this game can be called a 'sequel' of sorts, since it is set in the same universe. You play Dan Gordon, a hapless, average Joe who is kidnapped one day by aliens to be their errand boy. Unbeknownst to you, the aliens sent you on a suicide mission to deliver a package. Lucky for you, the package's intended recipient disappeared before you could finish the job - as well as captain of the alien ship that kidnapped you. Your mission, as impromptu ship captain, is to find out why people are disappearing. Since space travel requires fuel, which costs money, and space is full of dangerous pirates called the Culthorpes, you will need to fight and trade to pay your way and survive. The game's interface is a neat combination of adventure and space games like Star Control. When you control the ship in space, you view the action from the first-person perspective ("captain's chair" so to speak). When you 'beam down' to the ground of any planet (or more frequently, beam down a "redshirt" - hapless humans like you who can be bought to send to their doom), the viewpoint shifts to the traditional third-person perspective, with inventory items shown at the bottom of the screen (similar to, say, ST:TNG - A Final Unity). Every once in a while during these adventuring portions, you will have to survive action sequences that range from sneaking past the guards, to navigating tricky mazes, to gunfights. None of these sequences is too hard; in fact, they are quite fun to play and provide refreshing change from gameplay. In addition to the main plotline, there is a number of optional quests you can undertake, such as finding fish for a galactic restaurant, or finding missing scepters for a millionaire. My favorite optional quest involves selling database entries to a university - this requires you to scan as many planets, people, and objects in the game into your database possible. The database entries are quite fun to read, and often provide interesting additional information that makes the GFW universe more 'real' and dynamic. As usual with Yahtzee, the graphics are great, the writing superb, and the plot quite interesting especially in the last third of the game. Try as I might, I really could not come up with a single complaint for this game :) Overall, a definite must-play for every adventure fan. Two thumbs up, way up!
Ian Asman I agree wholeheartedly. I've been playing this game a lot recently, and it's one of my favorite experimental AGS games. My only complaint is that I've tried to max out on all the upgrades in the game from Dirty Laura's Shop, and the upgrades require I think probably 900000 credits to max out on. It takes forever to trade armaments from the cheapest source to the planet which pays a lot for them just to make enough money to max out. I still haven''t bought all the upgrades. I could still try trading, or maybe try hunting 10000 Calthorpe just to get my money's worth. Nevertheless, this is a damn fine game.

Whenever I see these scenes with the High Ones, a chill runs down my spine. The combination of RPG Maker's music and Yahtzee's writing and art gives the sense that the heroes are involved in something bigger than anything they've faced before. It's because of these scenes that I had to complete the Rob Blanc series, particularly Rob Blanc 3, just to see if there were any hints I missed that would explain Rob's disappearance and the wrath of the Extranoids. Yahtzee is very good at combining humor with cerebral cosmic sci-fi. It's even more remarkable how he takes influences from Douglas Adams and the Space Quest series, and makes them more interesting for this game.
There's no wind resistance in space, so it really doesn't matter if a ship is a big ugly rectangle. It actually makes more sense than all the space ships modelled after planes.
While this entire video is pretty amazing (and the game itself looks...surprisingly fun), I think a moment that sticks out is the way Gabe says "Well...my chickens are coming home to roost."
It's interesting how Yahtzee's thoughts about his older work must have been much softer at this point; even if he thought the Rob Blanc games were bad this game is still kind of a love letter to them.
The adventure game story element reminds me a but of Armed and Delerious with the whole being able to explore the planets in any order but you need certain items to progress but you're not told which planet they're on

This actually reminds me a lot of Space Quest 3, specifically what Gabe mentioned in their SQ3 video where he'd like to see an expanded version of that system. You have a classic point & click adventure game, a bulky space ship, a very similar star map, and even a part about nerdy office cubicle slaves.
Does anyone else think Yahtzee sounded like a salesperson for the Oculus Rift? I didn't even know there were any models being used outside of PR events Also what is 'Consuming Shadows'?
This is the first of Yahtzee's games that actually seems good. The redshirt mechanic is cool and some of the jokes actually made me laugh. 'Boogie Boogie Uprisng'
HammerspaceCreature 5 nights is actually quite good when you are immersed in the story trying to solve it rather than be shown it. and trial of odysseys kent seemed fairly alright, id play it.
Ohad Balash Yeah, to anyone listening I'd have to say, have a shot at playing Trilby's Notes and 6 Days a Sacrifice for yourself before these two get to MST3K'ing them. It's much more interesting to hear input from the guy who made them after having already played them in a vacuum. It might be a little difficult to get into the right mindset now that we've already had half the series riffed on, though.
MediaMunkee I absolutelly agree with you. I played the whole series, starting at the time when only the first two were available and waiting for the next ones to come out, and I have to say that it's a bloody good horror story in its own rights. At the very least, it's better than a lot of crap that is passed off as horror these days. Anyone interested should get the special editions, since they come packaged with funny eastereggs, Yahtzee's commentary during gameplay and even contain some added scenes in the case of Trilby's Notes and 6 Days a Sacrifice. I would also add that people who liked Another World and/or Flashback should give a try to the game they will play next, 1213. While a bit difficult in some parts, it was a great throwback to those classic games. Finally, am I the only one thinking that Yahtzee is overly dismissive of his early works? Granted, most creative people are more interested in growing artistically and expanding their horizons than musing about the past, but still doesn't he have a tendency to go way overboard? Any thoughts on the matter?
Watching this while playing Elite: Dangerous with my Oculus, then they start talking about playing ED with the Rift. You definitely can run into the issue of not being able to see your controls, but with a decent joystick ((like my Saitek x52 Pro)) you can have a proper HOTAS set up that eliminates the issue. Oculus and ED is too awesome to want to experience it any other way.
From the pic used on The Ego Review: Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment (2/2) i did see first , I was thinking it was going to be a Space Quest 2 spoof and that was like that like the landing bay area when you go to the right.
Didn't Squenix make the Anachronox IP available for their weird crowdfunding collective thing? If an indie developer submits a game idea Square likes, they can then supposedly kickstart it. Maybe we'll finally get a sequel out of it, although that would require Hall himself to apply.
Yahtzee, this game looks incredible! do you ever think about re making or doing a sequel or something else based in the same world with newer graphics? :D
I'm quite fond of the structure and format of GFW. Sure it can be pretty grindy, but it always feels like you're building up to something, and the time you spend building up your ship is worth it in the end, so that part doesn't bother me. And yeah, as Yahtzee said, there's a high click-to-action ratio in the trading and that's unfortunate, since it makes a tedious thing extra tedious, but at least the game features a variety of methods of gaining money, like hunting down and destroying ships, collecting Culthorpe bounties, fishing, gathering data for the university, etc. The variety helps break things up and keeps things interesting. Over all, it's a quite well put together game, with an engaging story, amusing characters, and clever puzzles. (And I love the game mechanic of the redshirts!) :D Really, the biggest issue is the clunky trading interface; I wonder if Yahtzee would consider rereleasing GFW with that part cleaned up?
That kid definitely looks like he's leaning against the wall with his face. And it's great.

I was actually watching your other videos wondering when the next ego video would be out. Woo!
Where did you made the graphics? They look.. paint. Anyway neat game Yahtz. But tedious as hell.
May I ask how you get your volume to dim when you talk? That would be super handy for my videos.
is there any way to get the soundtrack of the game ?
You know going back and watching AGFW, I actually like this game a lot. I wish Yahtzee would make a sequel to it.
You could argue Starstruck Vagabond is like a spiritual successor to this
1:06:59 "the most dangerous book in the universe"... I am stealing this joke I don't care who knows it XD
"OWWW MY MOST OF ME!!!" Oh Yahtzee how could you forget a teen girl squad reference.
Reminds me of Space Rogue, but SR had an emphasis on space combat rather than the adventure part.
It's been more than a year since I saw this video and, I am still seeing the way Gabe saw it.
Does anyone else think Yahtzee sounded like a salesperson for the Oculus Rift? I didn't even know there were any models being used outside of PR events
Also what is 'Consuming Shadows'?
WayToTheDawn65 It's a new game he's making. you can download the beta here : www.fullyramblomatic.com/conshadow/

It's usually pretty similar regardless of the medium in question.
***** If someone is willing to pay me for that comment, you can bet I'll take that money. Just point me to them.
"I can yawn inaudibly, listen."
Fuck. You made me yawn
"Ow, my most of me." is from Teen Girl Squad methinks.
"Ow! My most of me!" appears to be a reference to "Teen Girl Squad" issue 8.
You should put a download link in the description.
Why does Daniel have three eyes in the textbox picture?
From the pic used on The Ego Review: Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment (2/2) i did see first , I was thinking it was going to be a Space Quest 2 spoof and that was like that like the landing bay area when you go to the right.
"So we're the adventure game version of ISIS."
My god, that was way funnier than it should have been.
My question is where the hell is Rob Blanc or Paul during all of this?
"Ow my most of me!" is from Homestarrunner. It's one of the Teen Girl Squad episodes
The little "bling" sound effect that shows up every now and then is also in Art of Theft.
Pretty neato.
There should be a kickstarter for an Elite:Dangerous style remake of this
DragonNexus All voices to be done by Yahtzee and Gabe.
"Many machines on Ix" - Oh Gabriel... I just like you more and more. Good old Dune.
can someone tell me what computer language he used to make this game
Yahtzee and Gabe talking about controllers
Ha, this aged well. I guess there's always hope
I love how bitter Gabe seems to get by the end of this video because of how tired he is.
Is the answer to the mathematical question the think-tank is solving going to be 42?
(And I love the game mechanic of the redshirts!) :D
Really, the biggest issue is the clunky trading interface; I wonder if Yahtzee would consider rereleasing GFW with that part cleaned up?
After all these years, he's releasing sonething, somewhat similar
Thank the forces of the universe, a new Yahtzee and Gabriel, at last.
