- Our voyage through my embarrassing earlier works continues with a game from 2002 rather heavily inspired by the Monkey Island series if Monkey Island had been mainly about sex jokes. Donkey Island, perhaps. Also, at the end of the video the audio for the last word gets cut off, so here's a transcript. "rs". Enjoy.

I played ToOK yesterday and decided to watch this tonight. It's a very cute game, a loving tribute to a bunch of adventure game classics that were made by teams of non-teenagers with money and resources, and not one overly-horny 19 year old with a bad blog. That's the right light through which to view it.
Yahtzee and Gabe are my favorite figments of my imagination on the internet.
Please, wake up. We all miss you.

Looking back over this, I feel like one of Yahtzee's problems with his old games is that he holds his past self to a higher standard of humour than he does even his present-day self. The little throwaway gags like the penlights quip about the owl don't need to be fully set-up and punchlined jokes, and it's fine to have little chuckles like that in sometimes.
This game features a gag that I still remember fondly, however many years later.
at 13:33 Gabe and Yahtzee talks over it.

POINT CLICK MECHANIC CONFUSE GABE! GABE ANGRY! GABE SMASH!
1 minute and 30 seconds into it and Yahtzee already tells Gabe to stop smacking his chops.
The only reason I dislike it when Gabe smacks his chops is because Yahtzee makes a big deal of it. It's not that big a problem.
I'll bet a lot of people share that feeling. It's more annoying than any sound Gabe makes and it completely interrupts what he was saying.
I have honestly never noticed this smacking chops sound. Perhaps Gabe can get Yahtzee out of this habit by giving him a smack in the chops every time he mentions it?
OptimusSledge Maybe we don't hear it is because Yahtzee edits it out? Either way, it is a little annoying to have him derail Gabe every time.
If Yahtzee is editing it out, that makes his mentioning it even more annoying.
It's true that Yahtzee is kind of a dick about it sometimes. But it can get incredibly annoying when Gabe smacks his lips constantly. See the part 1 of the Police Quest let's play to see what I mean.
Waiting patiently for 5 days a stranger, that was the first game of yours I've played, and I can't wait for some obscure nostalgia.
Yeah, found it on one of those freeware discs that come with computer magazines, I was scared shitless by it but eventually went through the whole series and loved it. Only one that I didn't enjoy as much the others was Trilby's Notes because I've always been extremely bad at text based adventures.
this game is actually pretty good as far as i remember.
Kharneth Korn I really liked the story in Notes but it's just that I don't have the imagination to get through text adventures. I'm better at classic point-and-click like the other Chzo titles.
Overall I think 7 days was the best of them all though. I JUST WANTED TO GO TO SPAAAAACE!

I'm surprised it lasted the entirety of that video.

I'll be very disappointed if there isn't at least 37 lines of dialogue that convey yahtzee's fear of being forcefully porked in the shitter.
What makes your old games still fun to play is the way you wrote and designed them. You clearly had fun doing them. Even though you designed them when you were young, it carries those lovable sensibilities I've seen in your later games. I find your old games to be inspiring.

This game was the first Yahtzee related thing I ever came across a decade or so back, because at that point it was one of the few AGS games that was finished and not completely dreadful. For what it is, it's really not bad! Not something to be embarrassed about.

We all are just incredibly happy that Gabriel isn't a voice actor. Well, while we watch this we are sad that he isn't but generally ... phew.
Theres something really striking about the overworld art in this game that im really fond off

Huh, does anyone else think that Yahtzee including himself in the game is like the Sonichu comic? Him and Chris-chan even look similar in their own portrayals. . .
It's looking to me like a lot of these characters are fragments of Yathzee. It's kinda like how a deity in a video game might be made up of several elements or charms.
Smash Yathzee into pieces and he falls into little shards of Rob Blanc and such.

Give Yahtzee credit he wrote this shit when he was a teenager. Plus at least he didn't try to sell his early adventure games unlike Daaaayvid Caaaaayge who's built an entire career out of his crappy interactive movies (I refuse to call them games because they aren't).

That game takes me back to a lot of the brower-based flash games I would have played around this time. Old Windows ME on a 56K or DSL connection.
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow is play on a king's quest game.... One that's about teleporting from island to island... which is why 'continental branch' made me giggle so much.
I'd like to see a Let's Drown Out of the Consuming Shadow, partly to not too subtly ask you finish it and partly because I can never bloody finish it and would like to see a competent playthrough.

I'm trying to figure out why this game had to be the one with the narration.
Oda Swifteye I think yahtzee remembered the dialog as being more clever than it actually was and he didn't want to stop simply out of spite when he realized it was pretty amateur.
At 39:04 you hear Yahtzee make love to Gabe while wearing a mouse costume.
I wished Gabe had asked about the reception of the game like he did with the last few videos. After watching the video its what I remembered most.

Ok the credits are a genuinely neat bit of integration.

Even after all these years I'm mesmerized by the video store clerk's animation. It's the perfect example of why you shouldn't try to imitate stylised art without some idea of how things work in real life.

I never forgot to take the disc back for a rental game. However I did once neglect to take the manual back, and I being a stupid kid at the time, kinda freaked out a bit about this. So I rented another game shortly afterwards and sneakily put the manual in with the second game. Ya know, rather than "whoops, my clumsy child self neglected to put the booklet back in, here you go guys."
I only now realized (read: looked at the description) that Odysseus Kent is from 2002. A DOS game in 2002?
Yeah, the earlier versions of AGS engine (the one used to make these point-and-clicks) were under MS-DOS. And later Windows versions were a bit of a pain to run on modern systems.
I did like this game, but I didn't notice the cross at the beginning, so I spent fucking ages wandering around with no idea what I was supposed to do.

The wig cleaner was quite misleading. I'd have gone thinking that I have to clean the black wig with a wig cleaner to turn in to gray and I'd have been stuck forever in the game.

I don't think being buried alive like that is survivable. You'd just ingest a lot of dirt and be crushed under the weight of it that even if you did get out, you'd have little strength to stand. And even then you'll most likely suffer from crush syndrome and die soon afterwards.

You're forgetting that in previous Yahtzee games they pushed on the inside of an elevator to deorbit it and land safely on a planet.

She used her kung-fu action grip and chopped her way the hell out of the coffin and graveyard ground and crawled her way out and into all night coffee shop... So, logic isn't really needed in most fiction...
More often than not, during the narrated sections, Gabe seemed to trail off irratically into Jeremy Freedman (pimple-face dead end job working teenager from The Simpsons).

Just a general question, but does anyone feel like people's tastes in gaming changes over time? For example, just five years ago, if you asked me what my favourite game or genre was, I would have said CoD/FPS games, but right now, I have been trying to get into older RPGs and RPGs in general. Games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls are now some of my favourite games right now and I somehow accumulated over thousands of hours in total throughout each series.

If Yahtzee ever does take up making games again I think this would be a brilliant one to build off.
Unlike some of his other games this one wasn't just not bad, it was actually pretty fucking good. And it's a solid enough foundation to build off, use this as a "Jumping off point" as yahtzee says, preacher's pissed, goes finding Kent on an island or something.

Smacking your lips or otherwise making noises with your mouth. It's a bad habit to have if you do a lot of voiceover which is why Yahtzee keeps trying in vain to break Gabe of it.

Seed Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?I thought 7days was good though. Gameplay was a bit standard for an adventure game, but story- and atmosphere- wise it was decent enough.My favorite in the series has got to be Trilby's Notes, though, with it's own OST, appealing graphics and kickass story and atmosphere.

Don't get me wrong, I liked that game. And the whole series for all that it matters. But the way 7days treats space physics and some smaller things is worthy of a few Nobel Prizes. There's a let's play floating around that explains everything in detail, check it out.
