I have never thought about using helicoils in them. I usually use JBWeld to build up the existing threads and then screw a plastic type screw in them coated with grease, so it won’t stick to the JBWeld. I screw it in loosly and remove it after the JBWeld starts to set. The next day, I will screw the screw into the new threads that I made with JBWeld. I do not tighten it fully for several days to allow the JBWeld to fully harden. I clean the original hole throughly with break cleaner and coat the remaining threads with a tooth pick with a little JBWeld on it. I am just trying to build up the threads before I screw the grease coated threads in the hole. You have to use a machine bolt in a helicoil repaired hole instead of a P screw. Most Stihl screws are P5 screws.

i isually cut small strips from a small nylon cable tie the length of the hole plus a lulittle more outside the hole and reinstall the screw...never had one fail and a lot cheaper and less work...

Had this happen before ended up drilling all the way thru the plastic grinding it flat on the back and ran a bolt thru with a nut on the back still holding strong

Home depot sells some rippled heavy duty aluminum foil type stuff you cut with scissors ..then u stick in hole and then you stick your screw in and it grips to side's

I'm an old Helicoil guy, got a big drawer full of 'em. I've even got that 5x.80. The screw being replaced was a self-tapping screw, meant to go into a smooth hole in a molding made of old milk jugs and hopefully never taken off. Why did it go bad? It's just holding a clamshell assembly together with screws either side. Was this for a demonstration purpose? That's fine. Was the cover removed and this came as a consequence? Whew, so many questions. When I saw the first video, with the comically small wire, (a stupid fix in any event), I wondered why nobody stumbled on what seemed to me to be the obvious solution and one I've used many times on small engine equipment with this issue. Take that screw, hold it in a pair of pliers and flatten it with a ball pein hammer on the anvil of your vise until it's about a millimeter wider. Maybe more. Whatever. Slather it with your fav plastic glue, (yes it will come out later), and after 27 seconds of work it's done. A Helicoil here is kind of overkill, but actually, if I was in the right mood, I'd do it. But dude, pull the cover. Do it right. I'd never drilled that 1/4" hole. I've seen an Echo blower with a 1/2" drywall screw doing this job. Love your videos, but just like with Steve, sometimes

Yah, seemed silly to wallow out the other side of the cover when you aren't inserting the helicoil there. If you are going to go to the bother of "doing it right" then do it right.

I have a similar situation however the hole is all the way through. Can I still use a Helicoil or will I just screw it right out when I go to screw my screw in. Let me know if you can help me out. Thanks so much and hope you are having a great day.

Could you use red Loctite or some ca glue to lock the helicoil into the plastic?

BMW Dealership screwed my moms car up. overfilled it many times becvause all the gaskets were leaking like a siv and stripped her drain bolt. She has a plastic oil pan and a plastic bolt. They wont own up and want her to pay for new oil pan. gonna try this and replace w a metal drain plug. Do you think i would have any problems w a metal drain plug in a plastic oil pan? Thanks. Just trying to find a cheap fix.

Since you are already using a different screw, just make this whole process easier and just use a bigger screw!

Just use a bigger screw. Otherwise I stopped using helicoils in the mid 70s. Used timeserts my whole career and as a shop owner.
