Evan and Francesco, I've been watching your videos since the beginning, and I've got to say, you're some of my favorite people. Thank you for doing what you do.
The longer I've been watching your videos the more I've begun to wonder what the common goal in all of these videos really is. I think just now I may have realized one of them.
There is a psychological effect often talked about with astronauts, called "the overview effect." I think it's possible Commander Hadfield had the same shift in cognition . I believe it's possible that part of your goal is to find a way to share that same clarity with us poor ground bound apes doomed to live at the bottom of the gravity well by showing us all how distinct yet alike we are in a way that is harder to do, but more accessible than strapping ones self too a couple thousand tons of controlled explosion.

Reading you comment I couldn't help but notice the irony of how it becomes displayed.....as it was finalized by TH-cam in the statement, 'Show less'. I thought it was hilarious that such an awakened moment was accidentally encouraged to stay silent.
I think the term for the effect described in the video is generally called "idealism". Aka the unrealistic pursuit of perfection. It is like the force of entropy when it comes to ideology, especially when the youth runs amock (though old people can be naive and idealistic as well). It can also be a force of improvement when the dosage is right.
Why does their need to be a common goal or an agenda per say? Perhaps the only "goal" here is to learn, and from learning, become better and more educated people open to ideas and perspectives from all walks of life. And from what I've seen from this video at least, learning to avoid those elements that could be considered dangerous.

I have never had the privileged here on TH-cam to watch content that is incredibly honest, open and careful. Many forget there are real people behind all things historical more so when dealing with genocide, intolerance or just plain hate. I truly enjoyed what your videos put forth, clarity, open mindedness and patience, all of which seem to be lacking in many aspects of our lives. To raise my hand and reinterpret your point:
You're right. Any ideologically bound group is inherently at risk of being taken over by more extreme elements. That doesn't just go for the Right but also for the Left, the Libertarians and the Authoritarians.
As someone with a slight bias towards the left wing, I'm astounded by the amount of people on "my side" that genuinely argue for communism.
As soon as the argumentative groundwork is layed, it's often difficult to argue against more extreme conclusions without seemingly attacking your own beliefs.
For example I do believe that economic equity is, at its core, a noble goal. So how do I argue against someone who then stands up and says "Let's go out and put economic equality into action!"? All I can do is say "I don't actually want equality" and regardless of my beliefs it's easy to see how that would immediately discredit me within the discussion.
The answer to this is to always think critically and to deconstruct your own beliefs and those of "your side" just as thoroughly as those of your enemies, if not more.
ターニャ I find myself explaining to people quite often how those with good intentions but ideologically driven can easily be manipulated by those that wish to control. I’m British and Britain has a high number of nationalists im also left leaning but still a nationalist to an extent and it’s a common thing in Britain to have this view of superiority over everyone else in Europe because we are British we won wars against them we are conquerers, but we aren’t now we hold our history to our heart and say this is why we are superior but we’re not we aren’t better than the rest of Europe we’re in many respects worse than them but we believe we’re better because 200 years ago our armies dominated theirs.
I use that as an explanation for British nationalism as more extreme nationalism is on the rise and it’s because British people feel disenfranchised the government plays stupid games the police are understaffed and can be ineffective and many other problems are pushing people toes do people like tommy Robinson because he talks sense and addresses the problems in the country. Tommy’s probably not a bad guy misguided but he stands up for what he thinks is right, but the problem is that people who only wish to better themselves could take control of these groups and use them to push agendas not in the interest of British people but the interest of the powerful. It’ll likely not come up o this but Britain has a history of its people rising against those who wish to oppress or disempower them but they’ve never had the support of the working class so widely within their more fringe groups. I’m left leaning but I know that those groups fringes can be dangerous whether left or right and I believe your point is the most accurate those with good intent driven by ideology easily become the new enemy of liberty.
First of, can I just say that I absolutely adore your rambling about Britain's superiority complex? As a German I'm very familiar with that part of your culture (#GottStrafeEngland :p).
There's two different effects here I believe.
On one hand a group that feels ignored, disenfranchised or even attacked will tend toward more extreme ideologies and actions, case in point Germany 1933. That seems obvious enough, if being moderate has gotten you into the position you're in you might consider being more extreme to get out of it.
On the other hand there's a general trend that pushes ideologically homogeneous groups or groups with any shared goal towards extremism. This doesn't happen because moderate strategies seem to be less effective or because the members of the group feel attacked, but simply because with a decrease in ideological diversity it becomes harder and harder to defend yourself against extremist arguments. After all: They're on your side, and by attacking them you're essentially attacking yourself.
You could call it part of the echo chamber effect, the more your own beliefs are confirmed and strengthened by your surroundings, the more confident you are in them and the more likely you are to argue more extreme points.
If you're arguing with a group of leftists it's so much easier to make a case for communism than if you're talking to right wingers.
Even beyond that, there's the aspect that some individuals simply crave power and influence and will manipulate a group to support their agenda. Ideological homogeneity is extremely easy to exploit for people like that, since their arguments only have to seem valid from one perspective.
One last point I'd like to make: There's this idea of "the path to hell is paved with good intentions", something that you eluded to as well.
I put forth that an ideology or political group without good intentions simply doesn't exist. Nobody would follow someone who wanted to worst for them.
For me personally this is a kind of test I give myself, to see if I understood someone's ideology. Asking myself "For whom do they want the best, and how are they trying to achieve that?". This not only makes people more relatable, be they Nazis, Commies or Jihadists, it also gives you a starting point to actually reason with them. It might sometimes seem that some people are just unhinged lunatics filled with hate, but this is very rarely actually the case.
Near as I can tell, if your left-leaning friends aren't calling you a fascist, and your right-leaning friends aren't calling you a communist, you're probably out on the fringe somewhere, which is fine as long as you remember that the others around you are also humans and deserving of dignity and respect.
COMMUNISM ISNT ECONOMIC EQUALITY ITS ECONOMIC EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY WHERE CEOS ARENT SACKED BUT WORKERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO GO CREATE THEIR OWN ENTERPRISES (OR RECUPERATE WHEN BANCKRUPCY OR LAY-OFF) AND IN THE CASE OF INDUSTRY AND MEDIUM-LARGE BUSINESSES TO COLLECTIVELY OWN THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION. I personally recommend reading Marx and Engels (if you can get past the hogwash of labour history) rather than off quotes and commentaries if you want a feel of mid 19th century communism political thinking. STATE OWNED ENTERPRISE AND REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH AND EVEN BLOODY TAXES DOESNT HAVE TO BE PART OF THE DISCUSSION AS FAR AS ARGUMENTATION GOES, AND WHY WOULD IT HAVE TO BE IN A FINAL PRACTICAL SENSE (seeing as making those a core component of your policies goes and bam! defines communism :) GO LOOK YOUGOSLAVIA UP, IT GOT COMMUNISM ""MUCH LESS WRONG"" THAN MOST OTHER PLACES YOU CAN THINK ABOUT. ISREALI KIBOUTZ IS ALSO INTERESTING. PSA by your friendly neighbour a(pre-)political non-communist liberal slacker literature and music graduate

I just made an example from something I see argued quite commonly, whether that aligns with your understanding of communism or Marx' understanding of communism I don't really care. Wow, Armenia is beautiful. My son in law is Armenian and I realize that I don't know much about his father's homeland. My in laws are wonderful people, but since this is my step daughter's husband and I didn't meet her mother until she was 16 years old I tend not to pry into her life too much. All I did know was that when she met her husband to be that her mother and I liked him and his family, who are hard working, friendly and caring people. Thanks for sharing some info in your videos of the plight of the Armenians.
My son is half armenian his father passed away and never taught him much about his roots , im puerto rican so hes been used to my family's roots but ive been pulling up content on Armenia bc its imperative that he knows both sides, he looks more like them than he does me lol hes got sandy straight hair very light skin and hazel eyes, we are complete opposites lol..

I am of Armenian and Irish descent. So I am am member of two diasporas with prominent nationalist movements. I grew up in Colorado Springs. So, I am versed in far-right politics. The only thing that surprises me about all this is that no one saw the neo-nazi problem coming. Once you make preserving a racial-religious identity an explicit political goal, it is going to attract people who want that identity to be advanced, to the exclusion of all other identities.

I think we can do that by celebrating and advancing our own heritage, but also promoting intra-group understanding and enjoyment of culture. Recognizing and maintaining our differences doesn't have to mean demonizing them. I think it's natural to love one's group like family, but it is also useful and enjoyable to think of other groups as your friends.
I live in the Co Springs area as well. I'm a military brat and I've only been here for a few years, but what specifically are your experiences with far-right groups in this city? I see a lot of mainstream conservatism going on, but never any Neo-Nazis or anything I myself would consider to be "far right".
I like this video because you put so much emphasis on nuance and clarity of a message and that is something that is missing from most discussions both online and off the cuff ones in real life.
Even now with all the time in the world I can't really be arsed to write out my thoughts in full and would rather just jolt down an answer along the lines of: "Yeah exactly!" or "I sorta agree with it"
And it is from those answers that the misrepresenting types draw their sense of mass compliance with their ideas and associations towards the subject in question.

These videos are amazing man! I love the research that goes into this history and the storytelling is top class. And you should come back to your dad’s hometown, it’s not quite rare but there’s a video to be made about the first encounter the tribes of the now American Midwest and Canadian Ontario had with french explorers sailing up the Saint Clair into Lake Huron; imagine the sight of ships of the scale that have never been seen before suddenly appearing on the horizon, only to simultaneously destroy your civilization by accident and with purpose a few generations later. There’s also some amazing untouched wilderness that would be great for B role if you take a boat up north in the lake (I don’t know anything about filmmaking but just a suggestion lol). The fact that this half of the globe was built upon utter, organized, and despicably well executed conquest is a fact that we need to reckon with, and I think these videos are wonderful for helping people understand the roots of a place. It might help them understand those of “ours”.

Neo Nazi is a poor choice of words. Like comparing an Orange to Grapefruit. Nazi, and by relation fascism, is entirely radical and malicious. The idea you are referring to and almost hinting at is this:
Armenia and Armenians are deeply loyal to family and traditions. As a nation, Armenia has been surrounded by and occupied by malicious forces and empires time and time again, yet we remain Armenian by choice. We hold the idea that the world can be as beautiful as we imagine it to be, with everybody in every country living peacefully and to their own. Yet, we also know the taste of the truth that is; the world is grounds for demons who want your soul. It's hard as an Armenian to trust yet we hold faith enough to, (we trust our neighbors enough to invite them into our homes for BBQ, we trust enough to help and contribute etc etc etc) yet a grim cloud of death hangs over the Armenian conscious because it was our very neighbors who have always tried to erase our existence. The idea you almost touched on was the idea to trust family only, and to preserve our existence in this world by defending our blood and culture. The Nazi aim is to take over the world, the Armenian aim to survive on our land. We understand that every nationality has their place and purpose, but we will not give up our right to live nor our ancestral lands. You could kill us but the Armenian spirit is the spirit of life itself, we will never fade

@@katethegoat7507 Close, maybe. Not the same. Differentiating factor is peace. Arguments and disagreements, sure. People are animals of conflict. But senseless killing is something that humans can avoid.
Also, “living peacefully among their own” doesn’t have to mean among their own ethnicity. Think of a multi cultural city like Los Angeles. A lot of cultures from different parts of the world can coexist amongst each other because we share enough common interests and most of us are able to respect the differences without having to agree. I wouldn’t say Los Angeles is a fascist collective. It can be, but enough of us recognize that fascism isn’t really cool

@RareEarth The idea of blood being tied to religion is actually the way all native religions work. Native faiths are almost universally based on ancestor veneration. And in these religions, your culture's heroes and Gods are seen as your ancestors. The Spartans for example viewed themselves as being descendants of Hercules, who himself was a descendant of Zeus. They therefore saw themselves as descendants of Zeus. Because of this, they were tied by blood to their religion. If your religion is based on ancestor veneration, then you can't just pick and choose your religion, because you can't choose your ancestors. I literally can't practice Cherokee ancestor veneration, because I don't have Cherokee ancestors. In the same way, an African can't practice Greek ancestor veneration because they don't have Greek ancestors. I assume it is the same with Native Armenian faith. You must be tied by a common blood heritage, but it comes not out of hate, but the simple logical fact that you can't practice a native Armenian faith if you are not native Armenian.

I disagree. I think Rare Earth ignores a lot of the nuance in his painting of anyone right of left as a neo-nazi while the only fact he uses is "He fought with Hitler!" which is a dubious claim at best.

As an Armenian person, I enjoyed the video, but I think there are some ideas that need to be untangled for the sake of clarity: Nzdeh was a man of his time (as you correctly point out) his ideology was both borne out of existential struggle but also borrowed from the proto-fascist ideas which were in vogue at the time across Europe. I don't think its right to conflate Nzhdeh's "nation-religion" concept (which was more of a political ideology than a religion) with the modern neo-paganist movement (even if there is some overlap between its supporters). The neo-pagan movement in Armenia was reinvigorated with the fall of communism, and a desire from some people to return to a pure form of religion to replace their faith on socialism (this is in line with a lot of Slavic-paganism revivals across the former Soviet space happening at the same time) - many of them were associated with various neo-nazi movements, but its important to point out that neo-pagans (and especially neo-nazi pagans) form an infinitesimally small portion of the Armenian population; and the Armenian Aryan Order went from being an obscure political party to a joke, and then basically disappeared. Nzdeh is held in high regard by the majority of Armenians in one way or another, and that probably includes pagans, most of us do not remember him primarily as the creator of a pagan religion, however. Its worth pointing out that Armenia does have issues with ultra-nationalism and neo-fascism even to this day, but that's mostly beyond the tiny pagan community. The pagan-neo-nazi thing was a trend for foreign journalists visiting Armenia in the late '90s and early '00s but isn't really an issue anymore.

The thing with Nzhdeh - he wanted Armenia's independence, and was thus against the Soviet Union who had annexed independent Armenia in the early 1920's; an independent Armenia Nzhdeh himself had fought for as a general. At that time Nzhdeh even led a successful rebellion against the Bolsheviks for more than half a year before they forced his army to surrender; one of the conditions for surrender was that Soviet Armenia got the region of Syunik in its borders, which now gives Armenia one of it's two open borders today, the one with Iran. Azerbaijan would easily have destroyed Armenia by now if it weren't for this. So anyway, World War II happens, and who else is against the Soviet Union? The Nazis. It's not that he necessarily agreed with the Nazis, he just saw them as the best chance to take down the Soviet Union and free Armenia.
And of the very few Armenian pagans I have met, none of them are neo-Nazis. At best it would be a very small fringe group that should rightfully be snuffed out. I see Armenian neopaganism more as a way to reclaim the history and culture that was destroyed when Christianity took hold in the country, followed by centuries of subjugation by foreign powers. To restore what was lost.
Nzhdeh was the founder of a right wing fascist philosophy known as tseghakronism, which argued for a return to armenian pagan ways, preservation of the armenian race, and anti partisanism. The co founder of the ideology authored a book about how Armenia was an Aryan Outpost in West Asia, intended to be read by racists as a way to prove armenia was white. If that doesnt sound like a nazi, I dont know what does.

I don't know how you got access to this information and nuance as a non-Armenian but the jist of it is not that off. However, these neo-pagans that tend to lean pretty conservative and nationalist are quite small, like really small. I can't imagine them to be more than a thousand or so members.
Most Armenians abide to the Apostolic Church and many are also conservative and nationalistic but far from pagan. Njdeh's beliefs are taken to a new and different level by those.
Njdeh's legacy should be looked at closely outside the taboo of the Nazi affiliation that gripped all South Caucasian anti-Bolsheviks and without the need to counter the armeno-phobic propaganda Azeri's use to slander Armenians with childish correlations with Njdeh.
Unfortunately, the global wave of the right wing is increasing and Armenia isn't immune to it.
When niche ethnic groups or tribes like Native Americans in the Americas, AFro-Americans (MLK), Africans etc. have "power" movements and promote their culture and such, the left is okay with it and even celebrates them. But when a small and fragile ethnic group in the Caucuses does it, then it's not right.

This spoke to me on a personal level. I am a Norse pagan and I follow the faith of my ancestors. My religion is also played with a lot of Neonazis. A lot of people assume that I am a Nazi just because I believe in these gods.

Excellent video except for a moment's confusion caused by use of language. Saying someone fought "with" the Nazis can be taken in two ways.
Timmy always fought with his sister suggests Timmy and his sister are always fighting each other. Not that they formed a unit to fight other people. In WWII the USA fought with the Allies to me sounds like an adversarial position. Maybe it's a British thing.
Could I suggest that for clarity, should the situation arise again, you say something like "The Armenians fought alongside Hitler", so as not to confuse stupid people like me.

It is taken both ways over here in the US. It’s mostly held in better context, such as “Britain and France fought with each other in WWI. Together they help end the war.”
Or alternatively,
“Spain and America fought with each other in the Spanish Civil War. With the defeat of the Spanish in Mexico, the US gained considerable territory in the West.”
Even in America though this is poor wording given the lack of context, but since the title mentions Nazis, one could guess that “fought with,” is “fought alongside.” Truth be told, if this was an English American class, the teacher might recommend replacing “fought with,” with “fought alongside,” the more commonly used phrase over here to denote they were on the same team.
Armenians neither had a reason to fight alongside Hitler, nor were they in a posiion to do so. Armenians in their provinces under Turkish rule were annihilated by The Ottoman rulers , between 1915-1918) who acted with the German auathorities. As an Armenian, who grew up in Armenia, this is the first time I'm hearing about this "Problem". I've never seen or heard any Armenian talking about this religion that you are referring to. Are you sure this isn't some hyper-exaggerated joke or something?
Considering it is about .1% of the population, I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it. Being ethnically related doesn't by definition mean you're researched as to what's going on in every corner of society.
