Hi, Chilean guy here. I was a kid when the atrocities in Colonia dignidad "were discovered" (many people knew what was happening but it was not reported in the media). One thing that was not mentioned in the video is that the colony had an impressive pastry operation. They basically used slave labor (the colonists under Shaffer rule) in order to sell german-style organic non-industrial cakes in almost every supermarket in the country. Well, I remember that when media reports about what really happened started coming in, everyone was like "wtf! The people from the Colonia dignidad cakes are a pedophile Nazi cult??!!". Just to put into perspective, for an American audience this is like, I don't know, suddenly realizing that the organic food brand Amy's kitchen was controlled by pedophile Nazis who had slaves, a shitload of weapons (including chemical weapons), and a secretive compound that was used by the US government as a second Guantanamo. Wild shit.

I remember the summer of 97 or 98, being in a family vacation down in the South - as we call it here in Santiago - and how my cousins and I used to scare each other saying “don’t you know Paul Schafer is missing? He’s going to come and get you in the middle of the night!”. He was a Boogeyman of sorts. We knew he had done something ‘bad’ to kids but obviously the adults didn’t told us the details. Years later I, and many other Chileans, came to understand the extent of the atrocities that happened in Colonia Dignidad.

The problem wasn't even communism necessarily, it's just that structure attracts corrupt totalitarianists. Similar to absolute monarchies, it can hypothetically work, just not realistically on wide-scale basis. You can have very happy small communes though, although communism as a government type is just unsafe. Sad it's got so much instant fear by the west without understanding the difference between people who were communist and the actual idea of it.

The thing to think about here is that this person was able to camouflage his sadistic practices by using institutions which were generally regarded as virtuous to attract victims and obfuscate evidences which might create suspicion. Billy Graham wasn't a healing evangelist. He became popular at the same time, but had different views and methods. The healing revivals petered out after a few years with few lasting institutions, but I am vaguely familiar with Jim Jones's genesis in that movement. I am not familiar with Paul Schafer's religious beliefs, but I doubt they bear much similarity to mainstream Baptists like Graham, who worked ecumenically. Modern Western religious history is a very complex subject, so I can understand the lack of familiarity, but the reference to him in this video could be seen as an inaccurate dig (which I assume was not the content creator's intention). It would be very unlikely for the Queen of England to associate with a healing evangelist, as she did with Graham. Otherwise, it's another thought provoking video.

@@ironman10181 It makes sense if you're talking about the branches that stemmed from the post-war schism of Christianity, which is what I had intended to do. Both Jones and Graham started on the same stages, with similar followers. They branched away from each other early, and ended up in drastically different places. But they are both undeniably indicative of the schism.
I would have saved infinite heartache if I'd said Oral Roberts as I'd originally intended, but hindsight is 20/20.

There was a great Netflix movie on an American hippie couple who got imprisoned in Paul Schäfer’s compound after the Pinochet regime arrested the man and handed him over to Schafer. Then his girlfriend joined the cult to try and rescue him - which she did eventually. Extremely inspiring.

Adrienne Clarke Thanks! I just read about Dr. Hubertus Strughold found from a Nat Geo article by searching NASA Nazi’s. I’d heard before that America and Russia used some of the Nazi’s rocket scientists post war; but using actual war criminals; those that committed or took part in the worst of the atrocities from that period is pretty gut wrenching stuff. For them to actually be celebrated as heroes in any shape or form is a hard pill to swallow. I’d love Rare Earth to cover this subject some more.

Adrienne Clarke Not really. This history of what seems to have happened to a lot of these Nazi’s post war contradicts the official narrative of what the war was, and why it was fought. My grandparents and their generation would have been up in arms if this was widely known in the decades after the war. No wonder they tried to cover it up; but it doesn’t make it any less shocking or disgusting. Let alone we are all now profiting from and so reliant on technologies, medicines etc that often have there roots in scientific breakthroughs credited to monsters and tyrants; or that in some instances these technologies wouldn’t have existed without such horrible experiments. Changes the context of history quite a bit.

Yeah, definitely not non-bias, but told in a way that really doesn't aim antagonize. Mostly factual statements told with a personal touch. But who cares? It's engaing, interesting, sometimes horrific stories that I would've loved to be told in hostory classes as a kid.

I remember as a child how my parents would watch the news horrified, not wanting to tell me what terrible things were happening.
As an adult now, I can't explain myself how is this absolutely forgotten for most of chileans in the present.
We are in huge debt to our kids. Right now it's in great debate on how the church has systematically abused their children and, some years ago, the SENAME case, where more than 1300 poor kids who lived in houses run by the governement died by medical neglicence, was in public discussion.
Unfortunately, history seems to repeat itself over and over again.

Being born into a torturing, abusive cult family is among the absolutely worst things I can imagine possible for a human being. I cannot fathom the suffering these people go through. I saw a documentary about a woman in Germany who had this happen to her. She said the cult members, including her own parents, sedated her, tortured her, and raped her all through her childhood and adolescence. They fucking made her kill her own baby which was a result of rape!!! And the worst thing (if that's even possible) is that if she told people what happened to her at home (which was extremely dangerous!!!), people could not believe it and would not take her serious. From all the trauma, she eventually split her personality and developed mentally illness, which is the reason why later when she wanted to go to court, her testimony wouldn't be taken as evidence (again!) and even now, there are people saying she made it up because she is mentally ill.... If this isn't hell, then I don't know what is.

It's for the most part where the alt-reich came from. When Agent Orange announced he was running for president, literally nobody but the farthest fringes of society (and not all of them even) believed it was going to go anywhere--look at any news sources where opinions are allowed (the daily show, the late show w/ stephen colbert) and what they said at the time--none of them took him seriously. 4chan loves an outcast/underdog persona (since they view themselves that way), so them supporting him was pretty much a given. Almost certainly some of them did it as a joke, but if your actions and the results they cause are ultimately the same no one cares why you did it (important life lesson for `edgelords` right there).
Pedophilla is something of a problem on 4chan, and that's a bit of an understatement--clashes with the FBI aren't usually a good sign, especially when they're a recurring thing. It _is_ against the site's rules, but the mods just don't care--and even if they did, there aren't nearly enough of them to manage the level of traffic the site gets (social sites in the global top 1000 tend to get into legal trouble from the stuff their users do if no dedicated mod team is in place, and 4chan's in the top _500_ ). Any time I see Trump diehards using pedophilla as a go-to boogeyman for stuff and people they don't like ("guise the basement of that pizza place totally has a sekrit tunnel to a sekrit underground pedo child traffiking ring!!!!1"), I'm reminded exactly of how many of _them_ (too many) feel towards it--apathetic at best, and at worst--well, you can fill in that blank.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: 4chan/pol nowadays have more conflicted thoughts on Trump, slightly leaning towards the negative side. Funny how that works. Also I forgot to link some sources so here they are:

For those that are interested, I just finished watching a movie, "Colonia," released in 2015 about the Colonia Dignidad. It follows the story of a German citizen who was arrested, tortured, and imprisoned there during the military coup of Augusto Pinochet. Even though it is a fictionalized account, it is historically accurate. Good acting, weak direction. I recommend it. Evan, the protagonist who prevails in the movie reminds me a lot of you. Keep on truckin, my man.
Even if I cared nothing for what your channel produces (I do care though and it’s heartbreaking but I wish I couldn’t care). Even if I was callous and cared nothing for this, I would be pleased with you desire that individuals think and research for themselves.

Thank you for that video, this seems like piece of recent history I need to know. Also those buildings in the colony look exactly like what you see in germany. That alone makes the colony seem eerie.
The entire area could just as easily be in Bavaria, from building to landscape to crop choice. It was uncanny.
webfraek12, There is a lot of German in influence the further south of Chile you go. Just be careful not to group them all with Nazis because many Germans immigrated to Chile even before Germany was a unified state, only Villa Baviera has Nazi origins (as far as I know). Most germans came during the earlier years of the Chilean Republic, who wanted immigrants to occupy the southern territories of Chile and also to get rid of the native peoples. In a way it is very similar to what the USA did in their occupation of the "Wild" West and many other young American nations did. The USA also benefited with the European immigration. But just like in the USA, this came to a shameful and bloody cost for the native peoples of Chile.

When I launched TH-cam with the intent to show my own uploads to a bunch of guests and this video was the very first one on the top left corner of the page... well, it was beyond awkward. Possibly the most embarrassing moment of my life. The good news is that the only way I could think to explain the vid (and reassure my guests that I hadn’t been searching for some bizarre intersection of kiddie porn and Stanley Kubrick movies) was to show a quick “top five” Rare Earth vids, and let the works speak for themselves. I think everyone understood, but I’m not sure. As for this video, with its nearly unclick-able title, I gathered my courage and watched (great vid, as usual) and so far the police have not come knocking.
