    A great match: Roddick played his best, but wasn't able to beat the fantastic Darth Federer.

    Its amazing to watch how hard Roddick plays, you see how he is physically challenging himself so much. Federer makes it look so smooth and effortless. As a tennis player myself, i watch Federer and can dream of having is form

    The amazing thing is Roddick's approaches worked fine in matches against other players. That is how he could reach the business end of slams to face Federer. Roddick faced Federer in four Grand Slam finals. Those are titles he might have won against another opponent, one who didn't read his serve as diabolically well as Fed.

    • @Onmysheet
      @Onmysheet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roddick was lucky he didn't clash with Federer at the US Open 2003, otherwise he wouldn't have a slam.

      Because if Federer had reached the semifinals, he would've probably beaten Roddick.

    Roddick actually played about as well as he could and shouldn't be criticised too much. Federer was simply sublime at this stage of his career.

    It's so admirable how so silent Federer plays! Not a single grunt from him and his head is always vowed down even after an amazing shot! Such calmness and class, what a style!

      He does grunt (Especially on second serves and when rallying on clay), just not as exaggerated as other players.

    roddick is trying and playing as BEST as he can possibly do in this match...yet he'e still loosing in straight sets to federer...
    sometimes, you just have to say TOO GOOD.
    the way federer absorbs all the pressure put on him by opponents, rival fans and media..its just amazing. he always looks so assured and calm on the court..

    Roddick gave it his all, 120%. EVERYTHING he had, and still came up short, I have never seen Roddick try so hard and be so determined ever. (coming from a Roddick fan since 1999) It just goes to show that Federer has that little extra genius in his game that can pull up an unbelievable shot when he needs it.

    You can tell Roddick gives his all when he grunts lol. I remember this game, I think this was the final realization that he could never get past Federer in a Slam. Although Wimbledon a few years later he came oh so close..

    • @jugular911
      @jugular911 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roddick always got owned whenever he came into the net. Federer would pass him most of the time he did that. Roddick should have stayed at the baseline and ground Federer down that way, like Nadal and Djokovic have done so successfully against Federer.

    • @hacantyapradipta1119
      @hacantyapradipta1119 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Federer's serve was brilliant throughout 2007.
    2007 US Open - excellent (especially against Djokovic), 2007 Wimbledon - saved him the final against Nadal, 2007 Masters Cup - Nadal was just hopeless against Federer making 80 % + of first serves.
    That's the top 3 of his serving performances

    Look at Roddick's head-to-head vs particular players and tell me he's not good:
    5-0 vs Ferrero, 6-6 vs Hewitt, 4-3 vs Safin, 2-1 vs Sampras, 4-2 vs Djokovic, 3-2 vs Nalbandian, moreover 3 wins vs Nadal, 3 wins vs Murray.
    Roddick is one of the best players on tour UNDOUBTEDLY.

  • @kumarravichandran

    It is crazy how good Federer plays Roddick. Their matches always expose Roddick's weaknesses ever so much more: the short, ambitious approaches, the foolish court positioning when returning serve from his forehand, the penchant for pure pace etc. Federer just steps it up, almost as though to punish Andy for these mistakes. It makes for a great watch. And this was probably the best Andy has ever played!

  • @unowen7591

      He threw an entire hotel at Federer (Literally only losing 1 service game all day) in Wimbledon '09 and still lost in 5.

      @@hacantyapradipta1119 Maybe a controversial take, but I think 2009 was Roddick's best Wimbledon final, as opposed to 2003. He was fit, balanced, hitting both his forehand and backhand great, serving great, and engaging in lengthy rallies with confidence. That was his only way to beat Federer in my opinion, not the unreasonably high risk strategy of trying to win rallies in 3-5 shots against Federer, which IMO is impossible to do with enough consistency to win a match. Had Roddick continued his 2009 form he would have won another major imo.

      Honestly, that was only his final disappointment, I think the 2007 Australian Open semi-final that Roddick lost to Federer really blew-up his self-confidence, by the time of this 2007 US Open, Federer wasn't viewing him as a threat at all. You can see the difference in their body language, Roddick is trying everything he can think of to throw at Federer and Federer is just acting as if this is just a tune up for the semis and the finals. In 2009 that was a separate comeback for Roddick and his last.

    This match so interesting because Roddick was pressing so hard after Federer just took him apart in the Semis of that year's Australian Open, and just humiliated him. However you got the impression that Federer only playing like 75 percent of what could actually do, even though Roddick was going all out and he still won in straight sets.

    Man, Roddick is just so obviously slimmer and more fit now than he was at the time of this match. I'm not trying to dis him because even if he wasn't super fit he's obviously an incredible athlete, but it's so clear how he's in such better shape now than in 2007-2008.

  • @jonhwa135

    while Roddick does have the fastest serve, I still think Pete Sampras has the best serve. Pete's combination of power, placement and follow-up [his approach shot/volley] made it a much more powerful weapon than if it was just power.
    If Roddick can hit lines with his serve more often and bring his forehand back to where it used to be, I think he will be much closer to Federer's level.
    Yeah Andy! I believe in him =]

      Yeah, 2010-2013 was definitely not Fed's best years (His absolute peak was certainly in 2004-2007, winning a cartoonish 11 majors in 4 years), and it was certainly Nadal's best ever period (winning 7 majors, including 3 outside clay). Nadal would've threw Fed off the court in those years.

      Onmysheet 2011 not so sure. Remember Fed matched Nadal pretty well at the french open final that year. At the US Open Nadal is more vulnerable and he was playing defensive at times in 2011. Roger was in good form and he could have beaten him that year. 2010 and 2013 are a different story. But from 2005-2009 I would have given Federer the edge.

    Federer is the best player ever because he has the best PLACEMENT. he often places the ball in a spot where the opponent is not standing and with effortless power.....that's why he makes it look so easy because his opponents are always running around like headless chickens while he is barely breaking a sweat.

    Embarrassing? A lot of players grunt when they hit. Both Williams' sisters, Nadal, Sharapova, and plenty others. But he usually doesn't grunt that loudly. Actually Roddick's volleys were very good in this match. 0:18, 2:20 The problem is his approach shots usually suck and set him up badly to be passed. The other thing is Federer's defense is so good that your volleys can't just be good, they have to be perfect every time (otherwise you'll get passed). 2:09 and 4:57 are the perfect examples. Roddick hits a poor approach shot, and an excellent volley but it was already too little too late. I've never heard Roddick grunt this loud in a match, lol!

    There have been several matches Andy played Roger fairly close, not just 07 USO. He needs to have a good serving day and take good risk with forehand to Roger's backhand a lot more and see if things happen.
    I think that's why Andy has had some good stuff here. He went to Roger's backhand a bit more.

  • @Ryan81M

    I don't doubt that Nadal has got to Roger to a degree but I think that's only really happened since last year when he lost his confidence. From 05-07, I don't think he was afraid of him. On the occasions that he won, his mental strength was superb. On the other occasions (clay) Nadal was a beast.
    Unfortunately, last year was not a great one by his standards and Nadal took full advantage, hence why now the h2h is larger than it was at the end of 07.

    That is exactly right, to repeat an amazing year is almost unheard of and only the top greats of all-time have ever done that for even back to back years. Nadal has significant problems in his knees (Roddick has faced similar problems) and if Nadal isn't careful his career will be cut short. Nadal needs to become more aggressive and mix up his game in order to not put so much constant strain on his legs by playing from behind/defensively all the time. He is working on it, so thats good :)

    if Roddick could play as well nowadays as he did in this match against Federer, with Federer committing more errors than he did in his era of tennis, i.e. when he won pretty much everything, I honestly reckon that Roddick would have a great chance in beating Federer! He played probably his best match at the US Open (except the 2003 Final) here and would have beaten anyone else other than Federer

    It seems as though this year at the US Open Andy seemed unafraid to go after Federer. I love Andy, but whenever he plays Roger he plays him like he's afraid of him. But at the US Open Andy finally showed he could keep up with Roger, if he keeps playing Roger like that he just may beat him someday, but that's a big if because there's no stopping the Fed Express.

    yep, 2009 French Open as well, I remember he served 4 aces in his 4 service points in the tie-break against Soderling

    2007 wasn't a bad year for roddick. semis at Australia, and quarters at Wimbledon and US.

    just fyi for everyone else. My favorite atp player is Andy Roddick. I don't like Fed too much considering what he's done for Roddick's career, but i do respect him and what he's done, and i will defend him and all of the players of our time.

    If Roddick played like this consistently he could easily be back in the top 3.

    I agree! I don't know why everyone thinks because Rafa won Wimby that automatically qualifies him as the best hard court player and therefore guaranteed to win the US Open.I love Rafa and he has improved but last week against Djokovic was proof he still needs work. Guys like Federer, Djokovic, Roddick, Blake and a bunch of others are way better hard court players than Rafa who will play him to death and the hard courts will wear his knees out. I don't see him getting any further than the QF.
