I found that same Kahl to enhance my army.
I ended up getting the Combat Patrol box and used proxies from Tablehammer's Federation of Tyr to fill things out. I love their warrior designs and using spare heads and bits from the patrol box created some great looking units that seem like they belong.

Yes, GW could I feel potentially offer 'inferior' still files for those who want to home print, but that would soon get out of hand.
Don't get me wrong , I stopped playing in 4th Ed.
Vaguely looked at getting back into something small cost wise (ha) like Space Hulk, but between having to pay an ebay scalper, and getting setup with paints and brushes, I'd have nearly spent 2 months mortgage money.
As a company they need to evolve, but you've still got 2500 odd employees, nevermind the indirect companies and employees being put at risk.
I don't know if you have a 'proper' job, but if you did, and some YT'r was making a video undercutting and devaluing your livelihood I'd imagine you'd not to best pleased

I first got a Voxelab Proxima 6.0 printer and it was cool, but then I got a Flashforge Foto 9.25" 6k printer and the size of build plates make 3D printing all the more satisfying. I can churn out 20 termagaunts at a time, entire complete demon princes, etc. Now I mostly use the 6.0" Proxima for tough resin and functional parts. The big one just drinks Sunlu ABS grey day in and day out and churns out models.
It's nice to be able to print a entire army in 1 - 2 days depending on the army.
I'm sure GW have your picture on a dartboard in the office lol.

I feel like we are at the point where GW needs to start considering selling stl.s. I feel like it wouldn't impact their model sales, the people with 3d printers are already not buying models, but they might buy some official GW stl.s. It seems like they are leaving money on the table.
Worse than that, because the kind of people passionate enough to get a 3d printer are the core of the hobby. It's obvious how much Sam loves warhammer and the hobby, he just hates the predatory pricing. He is here creating really amazing content, and almost all my favorite youtubers are anti GW, not because of how they have bad pricing necessarily but also very lopsided unbalanced rules that exist only to drive model sales and other predatory hobby killing practices. It's like GW needs to be saved from themselves.
I'm not a Warhammer player, I play a bit of everything, and the near-enough to 40k models on MyMiniFactory are useful for a lot of sci-fi settings (and the fantasy ones you can find are even more versatile). That said, if I were a Warhammer player, I'd pay a premium for printable files. I've heard from 40k players you usually can't form a useful unit from one box, but two boxes leaves you with extra stuff, so you'd often round up to a third (like maybe the unit size is eight, you get five to a box, that kind of thing). I would honestly pay like 1.5x the boxed cost for STLs I can print as many of as I want, if I were a 40k player. That would still make them the most expensive in the printable minis space, but weirdly not by a wide margin. Most mini sellers overprice by a wide margin to draw you into their Patreon where you get a 40-50% discount just for subscribing.
GW could still protect their physical model sales by putting a couple of months physical exclusivity on boxes, like comic publishers do to keep the comic shops happy, and they'd be keeping people in the fold who are either pirating miniatures (literal scans or 1:1 copies), or printing near-enough proxies. The proxies don't pass muster for tournaments, so those players aren't in the competitive scene, and may not be playing 40k anyway (they may have been nudged to Grimdark Future from OPR or Mantic's Firefight), and the pirate models would probably hold up okay at a distance, but a discerning observer can pick the print lines if the paint is thin enough. You'd have to be a real life Inquisitor to be inspecting every model closely enough to notice, before a tournament, but I bet GW's judges are instructed to look for prints.
What I want to know is, do people _genuinely enjoy_ 40k so much that they want to play it with printed models, or are they just kept in the 40k ecosystem by their local community. It's what everyone plays, so it's what they play. I'm not here to bang the drum for Mantic or One Page Rules, but both of their games are competent. Mantic's Firefight is a little deeper, mechanically, while OPR's Grimdark Future is a quick pick up and play. While Mantic sells boxed minis and OPR sells STLs, both are miniatures-agnostic as long as your miniatures are representative of the unit in the rules. OPR even has a unit calculator if you want to scratch-make something.
Why? There's plenty of creators that make models better then GW. All that needs to be done is GW allowing 3D printed armies in tournaments.
@@TheGoatPC The idea is, some people might want official models that are visually representative of the appropriate units. Printed armies that are different enough to not directly infringe trademarks can be different in ways that make it hard to keep straight what unit they are, what weapons they have. Of course, printing third party models is no worse than a thorough kitbash in this regard, but some players might still appreciate the visual consistency of official models.
@@NoobixCube There are plenty of creators that can give you the visual representation you are looking for. And that really only matters in official tournaments, I've never had a dude in my lgs be like "nope you can't have that because of wysiwyg". But honestly, GW would never offer stl's. One person would buy them and share them with all the rest. This already happens in communities with patreons, kickstarts and other stl storefronts.

great looking army , really like the cost comparison , I have a 3 d printer and I have been building and army to print . I printed 20 flayed ones costs me 1.79 x 2 for 10 per plate run and that's $3.00 for the file compared to £37.50 x 4 for GW

I'm working on my own Ork sculpts and own an older Mars Pro. I keep thinking about using the printer to make 2 part molds and using cheaper bulk art resin to quick cast an army.
Have you ever thought of a similar resin or epoxy putty casting?

how did you get along when you first started ? i was thinking of getting myself a fdm printer first cause a friend of mine said they are more beginner friendly but when i watched several videos i just got turned off by the fact that you have to assemble them etc.

@@deformiertergolfball4847 i hot a halot one, and spended an afternoon calibrating and getting used to the cleanup and after finally getting the cones of calibration printed well i printed My first batch and it's amazing, the detail is so good, i would Say go with resin

I love your videos. You are a very relatable "every man" having fun with his hobby and pointing out what we all know: GW is fleecing us with over-priced injection molded plastic.
In fact you could do a time trial video comparing the time invested to slice, clean, and assemble a 10 man printed squad vs. Cleaning the mold lines and assembling a GW squad box.

I got my 3d printer an anycubic mono x2 and I love it. I have a sigmar game with friends coming soon, I'd never be able to afford the stuff in time but with my printer I've got an amazing army on the way

GW really needs to learn what Valve did over a decade and a half ago: if you want people to stop pirating, you need to offer a service that is better than piracy. Right now, GW is charging way too much for their models and is dragging their feet on official 3d files for their models. They've only themselves to blame when people proxy their shit.

The printed army looks amazing, however you glued the bikers extra gunner on wrong! The little C shaped piece under the gun goes on the roll bar and the feet rest on the back of the bike. You don't even need glue as they can just hang on there to easily swap the gunner out.

Firstly your videos are great and the models look good and I can’t deny the savings.
However.... the time spent slicing files, printing, trimming, assembling and curing before you even get to the painting phase is a lot of time for most people.
I struggle to find the time to paint nevermind making my own minis!
Cutting off the sprue and assembling the more multipart models takes a long time too. I just don't think it's that much more, when the price difference is so extreme.

Great video, I enjoyed your journey. You left a lot of Negative space on your build plate when printing off those units, you want to always aim to have the entire bottom plate covered so much so that when you lift one mini off the build plate you also lift up all its neighbors. You can let rafters and supports intersect each other, just not parts of the model.
I usually pack the bottom and the plate completely but like I said I had failures due to suction so I leave some. Gaps now to play it safe
@@battlebrothersam I know what you mean. That's another reason why I prefer the Lychee files. It's easy to add a few extra medium supports to weak areas. Your right about The extra two inches on that phorozen 4k it's a big deal. It looks like it only took you 3 plates with that machine.
Without even watchinf the video, id bet the 8$ i have to my name thay buying the printer, fillament, and files is cheaper than having an INCOMPLETE votaan army.
Did the manufacturing cost analysis in another video of yours since GW does audits and they are public. Their cost to manufacturer their products usually comes to something like ~17.5% of the price they officially sell their model kits for. Seeing a near 1 for 1 set come off for ~$100 for a full 2k point army is in line with the "GW is charging horse shit prices" argument that's been around since the 90's.

Well they're in business to maximize profit. If the demand is there (which it is) then of course they would keep their prices or even raise them.

What about staff costs (wages, uniforms, pensions) across the full product life cycle (factory, storage, QA, design, customer service), transport, storage, heating and electricity, sales TAX (mandated by gov in UK), any other taxes (e.g. council), insurance, risk/contingency, developmental cost with no direct revenue income, maintaining the website, advertising, legal support?
This is not even that shocking a percent! Many restaurants keep food costs to 28 - 30% but you would have to be an idiot to think the rest is profit...
@@Lvl62Charizard I'll actually fill in here since GW's quarterlies are public - GW's quarterly profit rate is, for the field they are in, staggeringly high. Its current Net Profit Margin for 2022 sat at between 28% to 30%
If you want to put this into comparison, the monster in the room Hasbro only operates on a 6.7% Net Profit Margin.
@@Lvl62Charizard 17.5% manufacturing cost is so low everything else is irrelevant, it shows bald facedly that they are severely overcharging and that usually leads to bad and inefficient practices and they shouldn't be rewarded for that!

i somehow hate you, i just got a decent deal for a ANYCUBIC Wash&Cure 2.0 + the ELEGOO Mars 2 Pro Mono for 200 bucks on ebay and got a rabatation on the fitting elegoo water washable resin 30 bucks.
this will be a journey to learn all this but i cant wait to finally have models i have been swetting for. finally finishing my deathguard and get some great unclean ones.

It varies vastly. In the eyes of gw nothing is legal but in the eyes of some everything is. My advice is to ignore how legal it is but just not use printed models at a gw store

yeah.. that's just the cost of the resin and files. There is still the cost of owning the printer as well as time and effort to get them printed, cleaned and cured. 3D printing is definitely cheaper but I don't think it's all the cheap tbh.
while i have a printer i still dont think its "the way forward" for everyone, like.. not even 50% of us.. some people dont have the space and you NEED the space dont put a damn printer in your bedroom and huff fumes while you sleep.. i think the idea of printing models going forward tho with companies WILL be the way, its cheaper in the long run for them so they can offer more competitive prices while still making a ton of money
As tempting as it is to get toy soldiers for a fraction of the price GW charges for them it ultimately has a negative effect on the hobby. GWs business practices are disputable and they charge eye watering prices yet they are the ones that pull the most people in with their ip and recruit hobbyists that will later spend money with smaller manufacturers when they branch out. Running a channel that only features ways to play GW games without their models will at length contribute to force GW to reduce their range of products and increase prices even more. They will suffer, smaller competitors will falter. If that is your mission so be it. Just keep in mind how few views your videos will get if you won´t have the opportunity to piggyback on GWs popularity.

I don't think that's true, I think that predatory pricing and bad rules used to drive mini sales will kill the hobby just as dead. It's already been shown in online games where they start pushing for cash grabs it kills the game, it just takes a lot longer to impact a physical game. And trying to ignore and quash 3d printing when the cat is out of the bag and lived 9 lives already is extremely backward thinking, which GW is infamous for. The video game industry had to wise up, then it was the turn for music and movies, it's time for the traditional game industry to take their turn and modernize.
Not the biggest fan of the sculpts I'm seeing online for the leagues of votann. I did find some cool ones for the heartguard today so that's my weekend sorted
