Keenan, sorry for your loss. I'm just seeing this video now but this has the look of a raccoon attack to me. I recall an acquaintance of mine several years ago who lost a 130 pound male sulcata in perfect health to a small group of raccoons overnight. By the time he found it in the morning it had been eaten as far into the shell as the raccoons could reach. They are extremely intelligent and known to cooperate at times to take down larger animals. A sleeping tortoise is vulnerable, even one this size. The hole above the neck inside the lip of the shell is a dead give away. Turtles and other reptiles are a typical part of the racoons natural diet and sleeping tortoises are fair game. Racoons are a constant worry for my own sulcatas. For that reason I make sure each one is securely locked within it's night shelter before dark and let out again each morning. Before long they get into a routine and head for the shelter at dusk. Again, sorry for your loss but just something to keep in mind. It's not something that happens often...but it does happen.
Nope. He houses more than one male in the same pen. What did he think would happen? Why chance it? Some Buddy. I have a buddy... and s/he's the only tortoise in the yard so this kind of BS can't happen.

Hell of a year 2021 has been for you. You nearly lost Slinky, Bobby and Darwin and now Brutus has died. Very sorry for your loss Kenan. A few winters ago we lost a Spur Thigh Tortoise in hibernation. My Wife now 43 found him over 35 years ago on a building site when she was a little girl. They asked around but nobody claimed him. They took him to an expert who said at the time he was an adult male at least over 30 years old. We are in the UK so one spring I found him in his hibernation box he had died. We never knew why. When I told my Wife one of the only times I've seen her cry like that. She named him Speedy , after the Cartoon Character Speedy Gonzalez.
That's a bummer man, after being together with an animal for such a long time 😞 My 2 year old Boettgeri's are in hibernation now, and I mildly worry about something like that happening when I check in on them again.

I'm crying as I continue watching. Last year I buried my 19 year old cat who died on my lap next to his dog sister who passed two years previously in my backyard. My dog in her favorite place and her cat brother next to her. Having my two cats now help me manage the grief I still have.
It's so frustrating not knowing the exact cause of death of a pet. We start asking ourselves if it was something we did or didn't do. Sometimes it's out of our hands and we have to accept it. I think you should really invest in few smart cams like outdoor Nest cam so you can see and what exactly happens. and maybe help prevent or break up fights etc.

Thank you for this video. I recently lost 3 of my box turtles to a horrible respiratory infection. It is heartbreaking. Even with antibiotics, fluids and tube feedings, they could not beat the infection. I tried my very best to save them. Your words bought comfort to my heart. Be at Peace Brutus.

I am so sorry what happened to Brutus. I think it was a snake because every time a pet of mine died without any reason, sure enough it would end up to be snake. The last time it was a Rooster, when I checked him out there was a hole in his neck, so I walked around looking and found the snake only about 150 feet away from him resting, my Rooster gave him quite a battle.. We have several poisonous snakes in Florida and especially in south Florida, and pigmy rattle snakes too and it is easy for them to not be seen. We also have the Black Widows and Brown recluse spiders, so it could be any of those. Always lookout for those, they like to hang around garages & barns & shacks, etc. PS-on your video at 8:11 I noticed Brutus's rear area is totally different than my Sulcata, mine has a flat area and yours comes together divided, are there different kinds of Sulcatas, I know mine are African Spur Sulcatas but I thought all Sucatas are Spur. When I first got them (15 to 18 years ago) I named them Sugar Pie & Honey Bunch, they were about 8" or so then, but after they got big I have been thinking about changing their names to Thornes & Spikes.

That and he's loose and floppy, suggests rigour has possibly come and gone. (General advice for any tortoise is never pronounce a tortoise dead until rigour mortis sets in or decomp starts, with obvious exceptions of non survivable injury etc)
I believe as you do that Brutus had a kind spirit as well as a gentle nature. Considering your life with Brutus bringing him to Kamp Kenan certainly gave him almost twenty years in the best home for wayward tortoises South of New York. Remember his enclosure was as close to nature as possible which by necessity also included the struggle for life. And sometimes our most treasured companions seem to live fewer years than we want for them as they pass through that struggle. Now Brutus has passed through and we love him and respect him for the way he struggled. Love to you and your family, Jim Fuller

i remember losing one of my red tegus last year and i did my best to try to revive her from the cold and it sucks so much losing a great awesome reptile that was so gentle and never gave me any problems or health issues and sorry for your loss of your great buddy Brutus, may he rest in paradise

I'm glad you have good memories of Brutus. I've never had a tortoise but as a kid back in the 60's had two red slider turtles whom I loved. The neighbor kids came for both their funerals. I did the eulogy of someone I knew whose hamster passed. I never knew his hamster but the hamster was important so I said nice things about him. Animals no matter the size or species you get attached to it's so hard when they pass. I never knew Brutus existed until this video and I'm getting misty eyed. The fact that you loved him is touching.

I love seeing tortoises coming out of undergrowth to munch on some greens, the way they walk/(run?) to get a bite is adorable. 😄 I love Tortoises and turtles! So sorry about the passing of Brutus. He was one of my favorites :(. May he rest in peace. I feel like it hits harder with animals that live longer. I have lost so many cats and dogs to old age, but nothing compared to his age. You did a very good job. He probably could have lived a lot longer, but it seems it was just his time to go. Some wise advice that I try to follow is that it is okay to step into the shower or hide away to cry. It makes you feel so much better and you have to let it out. It relives so much hurt and heaviness. then after just like you are doing, look on all the happy times you had with this amazing turtle and presence.
You need to get more Ring cameras... You could observe what's going on in the pens. It always REALLY sucks not knowing what happened. At least with cameras, you could look at the the feed and at least KNOW what happened. Definitely doesn't change or fix anything but it's sometimes just nice to know what happened. RIP Brutus 💔
Omg I’m so so sorry about Brutus. You gave him the best life possible and I’m sure he was happy. But that was a hell of a speech at the end there. You’re right. The best thing we can do for those who are gone is do the best we can for those who are left and honor the lost person or animal’s memory. I also hope some of the animals that you have now are still there when Leo and Sophia grow up.

Loquat trees r great and mine r flowering now. Fruit about the end of March. My turtles and rabbits love them as do I. Then spit the large seeds in a compost pile ASAP they will grow more trees for the birds and bees👍🏻

More than likely, Hercules was trying to get him to move. Probably saw him just sitting there and was like ‘hey, man. You okay?’ I don’t believe Hercules did it out of aggression.

I’m guessing that, since it’s breeding season, Brutus and Hercules fought, and then Brutus died from the injuries that were inflicted upon him by Hercules. But that’s just my theory.
Was kind of thinking while watching, I know he had special meaning so burial is more ideal but what about a memorial area with the shells and plaques telling their story etc. Mainly for you guys of course.

Kenan. Due to his skin discoloration, I have to say it looks like he died overnight. I'm sorry for your loss
That and he's loose and floppy, suggests rigour has possibly come and gone. (General advice for any tortoise is never pronounce a tortoise dead until rigour mortis sets in or decomp starts, with obvious exceptions of non survivable injury etc)
Kenan, our deepest condolences to you. Brutus can rest in peace, after all. You have done so much, he'll be forever thankful for your undivided tlc.
I believe as you do that Brutus had a kind spirit as well as a gentle nature. Considering your life with Brutus bringing him to Kamp Kenan certainly gave him almost twenty years in the best home for wayward tortoises South of New York.
Remember his enclosure was as close to nature as possible which by necessity also included the struggle for life. And sometimes our most treasured companions seem to live fewer years than we want for them as they pass through that struggle. Now Brutus has passed through and we love him and respect him for the way he struggled.

I’m so so sorry. Bless his sweet little tortoise heart. I lost my baby sister in March and within 5 weeks of her death, I lost my sweet little dog that I’d had for the past 12 years. Losing the two of them was almost too much for my heart to bear but I’m getting thru it. I’m truly so sorry for your loss. I can tell this hurt you deeply. My heart hurts FOR you. God bless you.

i remember losing one of my red tegus last year and i did my best to try to revive her from the cold and it sucks so much losing a great awesome reptile that was so gentle and never gave me any problems or health issues and sorry for your loss of your great buddy Brutus, may he rest in paradise

Hey Kenan just want to say I love all over your videos. I’m not even a turtle or tortoise guy. I’ve kept a lot of carpets and beardies. I watch this show because of YOUR passion. My wife and I can both see your love for these animals are 2nd to none which makes us very loyal watchers. And you lucky bugger you live in paradise.

I'm glad you have good memories of Brutus. I've never had a tortoise but as a kid back in the 60's had two red slider turtles whom I loved. The neighbor kids came for both their funerals. I did the eulogy of someone I knew whose hamster passed. I never knew his hamster but the hamster was important so I said nice things about him. Animals no matter the size or species you get attached to it's so hard when they pass. I never knew Brutus existed until this video and I'm getting misty eyed. The fact that you loved him is touching.

Well he didn’t take good care of this tortoise obviously. It died at 40 years old which is really young for a tortoise. RIP Brutus

I am so sorry for your lost. I loved your tortoises. You have a very gentle heart like Brutus. I feel so sad. We have 3 tortoises with us too. A Hermann, A Russian, and a Leopard tortoises. They are soooo adorable. They have their own personality. If I can only have sulcata tortoise in Canada but it is cold here. Our little lovely tortoises are always inside the house during cold season. Farewell Brutus and you take care Kenan.
I love seeing tortoises coming out of undergrowth to munch on some greens, the way they walk/(run?) to get a bite is adorable. 😄 I love Tortoises and turtles! Keep doing a amazing job caring for these lovelies!
P.S. So sorry for your lost, it'll always be heart breaking to see such a gentle giant pass when you know they can outlive several generations of humans. 😞

So sorry about the passing of Brutus. He was one of my favorites :(. May he rest in peace. I feel like it hits harder with animals that live longer. I have lost so many cats and dogs to old age, but nothing compared to his age. You did a very good job. He probably could have lived a lot longer, but it seems it was just his time to go. Some wise advice that I try to follow is that it is okay to step into the shower or hide away to cry. It makes you feel so much better and you have to let it out. It relives so much hurt and heaviness. then after just like you are doing, look on all the happy times you had with this amazing turtle and presence.
You need to get more Ring cameras... You could observe what's going on in the pens. It always REALLY sucks not knowing what happened. At least with cameras, you could look at the the feed and at least KNOW what happened. Definitely doesn't change or fix anything but it's sometimes just nice to know what happened. RIP Brutus 💔

Omg I’m so so sorry about Brutus. You gave him the best life possible and I’m sure he was happy. But that was a hell of a speech at the end there. You’re right. The best thing we can do for those who are gone is do the best we can for those who are left and honor the lost person or animal’s memory. I also hope some of the animals that you have now are still there when Leo and Sophia grow up.

Loquat trees r great and mine r flowering now. Fruit about the end of March. My turtles and rabbits love them as do I. Then spit the large seeds in a compost pile ASAP they will grow more trees for the birds and bees👍🏻

It's always sad to loose a animal partner, they're family really. It's never easy but we sadly have to deal with the reality of death. Remember the good times.

I’m guessing that, since it’s breeding season, Brutus and Hercules fought, and then Brutus died from the injuries that were inflicted upon him by Hercules.
But that’s just my theory.
