    This 3-part series on the UMP versus the M3 is very, very interesting, especially if you are interested in SMGs. Astonishing how good the 70 year old M3 design really was.

    For me, the M3 "Grease Gun" SMG is one of the truly impressive and wonderful sub machine gun in the world. And it is still so reliable despite of its considerable age, that is why they are some few type of this fire arms, are still in use in the Philippine armed forces today. Thank you for sharing this wonderful videos. Awesome channel vids admin, good work.

    Full-Auto has it's purpose, but 99% of the time. Semi-auto is gonna be so much more effective.

      redgreen3b1 I don't know where to start, submachine guns where purely designed to spray-and-prey, they didn't even have select fire levers until about the 50s, if you want single shot, accuracy and range, use a rifle.

    First off, great vid LAV! Awesome channel content as usual. Second, and this is the big one. This proves without a doubt the viability of the M3 even on the modern battlefield. The HK is obviously a superb firearm, no question. I have never fired either weapon but have to say a modernized take on the M3 would be a beast to see. Bring the grease gun to the functional level of the HK and keep its heavier bolt and simplicity and you could have a winner.

    Old reliable turned out pretty well. I was quite impressed with the M3. I shot one in the PI many years ago (M3A1) and really liked it; in fact, after recent experience with the Thompson, I would have to rate the M3 series as a better battle weapon. For what designers had to work with, as well as the time in which they had to come up with the weapon, they did a very good job. Not the ideal weapon, and with its lack of a selector not as useful for modern LE action, but good for its time and technology.

    Awesome, loved this. Ever since the mid 00s when I learned about the greasegun, I've been fascinated by "value for your buck" weapons like it, and when I heard the UMP was kind of like that for the MP5, I was very happy to find out someone had had the same idea and compared the two.

      Depends on the gun, but almost all actual burst-fire mechanisms merely trip the disconnector after whatever # of rounds are fired via the same firing cycle as in full auto. Only a very few firearms, such as the AN94 and the G11 (both unicorns) have mechanisms which specifically cause burst to cycle so quickly that the recoil impulse of round 1 isn't felt until the burst is downrange. Most guns with burst do not have that feature.

    With iron sights, I think I'd take the Grease Gun over the UMP, but, as they said, It'd be neat to see how the UMP's groups fared with a red dot sight. I'd prefer an M1A1 Thompson or a PPSh-41 over an MP5 any day.

    I didn’t use an M3 in WW2. Had my Thompson, M1, and 1911. Of course I snagged the first MP40 I could. In my unit it wasn’t a problem to use it, but had to hide it when around normals. In Korea I use the M3A1 exclusively. Great gun. In Nam I ran an M60 and loved it too. Fired an MG42 once in ‘45, and both are great mid guns. Hated the MP5 I got in SAD operations, but those are stories for an other day.

    I have a question that may seem simplistic to some , but why or what makes most guns rise up when fired on full auto?
    I understand that if you fire just a couple of rounds the gun hasn't had time to react but after the third or forth shot, well that's a different story...

    • @curseofa5r5a
      @curseofa5r5a 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Dan NZ every single shot rises the muzzle a little bit so after 3 or 4 shots it is not possible to align the sigths with the target, weapons have muzzle rifle in full auto due to the constant preassure generated by the recoil of produced by several shots interacting with the geometry of the gun wich in many cases makes the gun pivot around a very low axis, the gases comming put of the muzzle add to this effect but can also be used to reduce it by redirecting the blow to the sides or upwards and that is how a compensator works, so with a high bore axis, lineal geometrical design a good compensator, a low power ammunition and a heavy construction a gun can fire in full auto with almost no muzzle rise like the maerican 180

    2:52, did he just say the UMP has "very low bolt mass"? It very much does not, the bolt is nearly half the weight of the gun. It's a solid steel brick shuttling back and forth in a polymer casing that makes the UMP rock like a bronco on full auto. By far my least favorite of the subguns I've fired in the past because of this.

    • @Tortie300
      @Tortie300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same thing ran through my head, the bolt is massive! Paired with hollow point 40 cal got me longing for the MP5 again

  • @RUBIZEN

    I wonder what the designers of the M3 (and gun designers in general) would thiink if they saw the UMP, KRISS or even the P90? They might be impressed with polymers or even the P90's magazine, but maybe some of them thought we would be using laser rifles by now.

    • @jaguarfacedman1365
      @jaguarfacedman1365 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They would hate them. They had Polymers (plastic) back then and they were smart enough not to use it so heavily. Grips and handguards fine but major structural elements? no but i digress.

    Something to be said for low cyclic rate. More controllable and greater persistence in combat. Just an armchair observation from a lifetime civvie. I did once hold a grease gun having just fired an M16 (at an army base, so it wasn't an ar15) and the weight of that little gun rally struck me.

    • @budmeister
      @budmeister 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bio World Rifles are made for mediate to long range firing, while SMG's are made for close combat where having full auto can mean the difference between life and death. Plus the shorter length of smg's make it more maneuverable in close quarters like inside buildings where a rifle would be too long and have semi-auto or especially a bolt-action would mean death if you suddenly happen to come along an enemy. A sudden high rate of fire tends to spook people more than just a single shot.
