This has been your biggest and it really bore fruit. You did a good job combining all the pieces together. More than anything, it really is a civic duty to bring back the Sonics. In some weird way, it became threaded into the state's identity, which is why the farmer who the journalist talked about when he reported of the flooding mentioning the Sonics in between his main interest (agriculture news), it really means to them a lot. Remember how Elias got booed for five minutes straight when he dissed the Seattle audience? That's how much the Sonics identity has been embedded into the collective memory of the state.

we got sold out by a billionaire owner to a guy who lied to our city and said he would keep the team in the city for the remainder of their contract (three years), but stole them away immediately in the following year after Durants rookie year and the year the Supersonics drafted Russell Westbrook. Man...i was there almost every home game Durants rookie year. I thought he was going to save basketball. (s/o my guy Rashard Lewis btw, still got my Ray Allen even though he shitted on our city and said he hated playing here). Clay Bennet stole the team. and now the supersonics are supposed to "share their history". it should be no wonder why some of us who were old enough, absolutely loathe OKC. salute.

Man, the Clippers have gotta change their name. That name is cursed. And all these years, I didn’t consider the Sonics getting back in the NBA via the LAC. It’d kill two birds with one stone. And give any expansion two new teams. Instead of one and a reboot. I’ll always believe Louisville should get an expansion team. And especially over any city that had an NBA team. Like St. Louis or Kansas City, Vancouver, Cincinnati, ect. Pittsburgh or Nashville would be great locations. And of course I would love for this hypothetical Louisville NBA team go back to the Kentucky Colonels.

David Stern is why. Stern was a lawyer for the MLB when the pilots were moved to become the Brewers. Seattle and King County sued MLB and won. That is how the Mainers came about. Well, Stern had said he would make seattle pay, and he did. He coordinated the move, and Silver will do his best to keep his mentors promise of no team in Seattle.
Also, Shultz didn't found Starbucks. He came in after it was in business and bought out the original owners.

    • @SnowmanTF2
      @SnowmanTF2 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

Once their team was approved to leave, it hardly takes any effort not to have a new team. They are not getting an expansion team for the same reason no other city has gotten an expansion team, any expansion structurally loses the owners over time since most of the money generated is not local. If it were not for having an odd number of teams, then there probably would not have been an expansion after the round in 1995.
Then there are only a tiny fractions of teams ever seriously considering a move, and the few teams in smaller markets tend to be kept in local ownership groups.

Again, you put top notch effort into a video where most think the story ends at the move to OKC. Please never stop making your videos the way you do, I don’t think there’s any other sports-focused channels that put in the due diligence and effort you do into their video topics (many of which other channels wouldn’t cover) besides maybe Secret Base, their Dorktown series in particular, and I’d say that’s great company to be a part of.

Only thing this could’ve also touched on was our draft picks leading up to their departure. Can’t really prove this, but we made horrible picks that made our team terrible leading up to them leaving. Then we draft Durant and Green, team finally is on the rise, and poof, sold. It isn’t THE reason, but it is interesting how the two aligned. Almost like certain parties wanted us to suck leading up to the moving of the team

This is one of the first reports to dive into the true corruption that went down between the city, NBA, and Port of Seattle. Well done.
There’s one small detail I’d like to add about the Key Arena/Climate Pledge arena renovation. One major con of using the old Key Arena was the concern about the increased traffic and poor traffic management in that neighborhood. A major factor in the proposal getting approved was to use the Seattle Monorail for transporting event attendees.
Here’s the sketchy piece, “A private contractor, Seattle Monorail Services (SMS), founded in 1994, and currently owned by former Port of Seattle commissioner Tom Albro, operates the Seattle Center Monorail.”

I was too young at the time for Vancouver Grizzlies because they were just moved to Memphis, but the SuperSonics were the team of the North West along with the Trailblazers. Anyone who was from Alberta, BC, Yukon, Alaska… the SuperSonics and the Trailblazers were the most popular basketball teams for DECADES until 1995 when the Canadian expansion happened. After that, Canada had a team to cheer for, but there were still plenty of fans who adored the Sonics, even after Vancouver’s team was mismanaged and moved away. And then it all came crashing down. The Sonics were moved to OKC and the Raptors had just traded away their franchise players over the last couple years of that happening. But the passion for the sport remained in the North and Northwest.

I'm not mad at Clay Bennett or his group. They made an LLC for the sole purpose of bringing an NBA team to Oklahoma City. When they were unsuccessful in buying the Kings in 2006, they went after the Sonics. Howard Schultz though was playing in our face by acting shocked when the team moved. He knew what was up when he decided to sell the team to Clay Bennett instead of the other offers on the table. Him threatening to sue Clay Bennett afterwards was just PR for the backlash he was receiving as a local.

One of the things that you missed was the structure change of the Seattle City Council. During the fight for the SODO ARENA, the city council switched from all at-large positions to District (ward) based positions. Now, one of the Counci women who had previously represented the entire city, became responsible for the area of the City with Key Arena. Now she was responsible for the money losing arena. Had the SODO project gone forward. It would solidify Key Arena as a white elephant. Because of this, her vote changed to no on the Occidental vacation.

As much as Seattle loves the Sonics I'm surprised the move to OKC was allowed to happen. From watching this doc I get a sense that fans would have moved heaven and earth to keep the team in Seattle. Sacramento was able to save the Kings who aren't beloved nearly as much as the Sonics. The team has been gone for what feels like several decades and yet the spirit of the Sonics remains alive and well in Seattle. The NBA leaving one of the best cities for professional basketball cost them a significant loss in revenue. Was the move to OKC worth it? Sure doesn't look to be.

Really enjoyed this look back. I only went to a couple of games but it was 95-96 and things were HOT. Excited to see them back.

Best game I ever saw live was in the early 90s when I was about 12 years old. We were playing the Suns and went into double overtime and won. Seattle really misses the Sonics.

The original sale of Sacramento to Hansen was axed because NBA owners were worried about the precedent being set for owners to fund an arena. They didn't want to be on the hook for that. The city of Seattle still owned Key Arena and having an empty arena with no real tenant was not a great idea for the city government.

Key arena had such shitty access as a venue... When there was a chance to do something smart, they literally dug a deeper pit... And David Stern had it out for Seattle... I suspect he thought something like "How could so many rich assholes have such a shitty arena?"

That was a great video, I learned a few things I missed during the years of mourning. I had wondered what happened with Chris Hansen in the end.
I loved the Sonics in the nineties, it really hurt when they left an still does. Those games were so fun to go to, Payton & Kemp.

I’m a thunder fan. It sucks what happened to Seattle and I can’t wait for Seattle to get their team back. The OKC-Seattle rivalry would be pretty cool, plus Seattle deserves a team. OKC is passionate and loves the Thunder but I know the Seattle fans are passionate

NBA really screwed us over here in Seattle.
Team was bought on the condition it wouldn't move. Next thing you know they are moving and to a much smaller market than Seattle.

The sad thing about the gear is, OKC still owns the rights to the SuperSonics brand. So all of the jerseys, hats, etc. that are sold, OKC gets paid. Sad.

I was there, been to all the local venues....and I have no nice words for the Key Arena, or it's previous incarnation, the Seattle Center Coliseum. It's where concrete went to die. It felt like I was watching a big time sports event in the back storage room of a Safeway.
David Stern? I have no nice words for him either. He loved small markets and he was clueless about media reach. He literally rode the Magic/Bird/Jordan magic carpet. You'll find that in life, that most rich people made their wealth by being at the right place at the right time. Why do you think that most Boomers have pledged to give their life savings away?
