Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Lea Salonga, Cadet Glee Club of West Point and "Via Dolorosa"

  • The legendary General Douglas MacArthur has left the American people with many memorable statements, but how many of us know that during his farewell address at West Point, he gave the most truthful "job description" of those brave men and women who put themselves in harm's way for our defense. It was stated simply, starkly and poignantly, "The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training -- sacrifice."
Listen to him address this hallowed sacrifice followed by perhaps the most powerful performance of Billy Sprague's Christian music classic, Via Dolorosa performed by Tony Award winner Lea Salonga and the Cadet Glee Club of West Point.
Both General MacArthur's speech and the performance can be seen and heard on the DVD and CD "Stand Ye Steady - Songs of Courage and Inspiration" available at www.standyesteady.com (in 5.1 Dolby Digital) and honoring all US Armed Forces past and present. Directing and video editing by Doug Coppi of Curtain Call Productions, www.curtaincallproductions.com... .

Very fitting that a Filipina sang this song as a tribute to General Douglas MacArthur. History reminds us of Gen. MacArthur's famous promise of " I SHALL RETURN" to the Filipino people to save them from the hands of the Japanese aggressor back in WWII. He fulfilled his promise. THANK YOU, GENERAL.

Lea Salonga is not among the greatest, she is the greatest female singer of all time. Her vocal quality, Interpretation, and ability to act out everything she performs to the nth degree is simply without peer. Placing her above other performers does not diminish them it simply places her as the benchmark for all future vocalists. A new level not seen before in a female singer.

The way she sings is just heavenly, I've heard several renditions of Via Dolorosa, but this one is definitely and ultimately the best! And the brass section, and the piano, just breathtaking! God bless the Philipino people! Greetings from Ukraine.

One of my instructors was a cadet when MacArthur spoke at the Academy for what would be his final visit. They were expecting a dottering old man to make a few farewell remarks.
He was 82 years old and memorized every single word of a speech that is still remembered at the Academy today for it's eloquince and the way it touched each cadet there.

I dedicate this video to my brothers and sisters in two wars, Gulf War 1991 and Iraq War 2003-2011; and to the veterans of the Vietnam War, Korean, and World War II; and all those that put their lives on the line in little-known battlefields and in battles that are unknown to us. Yes, sacrifice is what we are expected to practice in the service of our nation. Matthew Allen Ramsay, U.S. Army Service in 2 wars in Iraq- Gulf War 1991 & Iraq War 2004-2005.

Hugo DBPHuguenot i lived in Manila a long time and was always aware of the battles fought there. macArthur's presence can still be felt, by me,in the Manila Hotel. The scars of WW2 are still visible here and there on the streets of this city and in many other places. My father-in-Law survived the Bataan Death March, was a Lieutenant in the US Army and died in the VA Hospital in San Francisco, 2004. Tough little bastard. He escaped from Camp O'Donnel , was shot in the shoulder and lived a long life. i grew to love the Philippines and the wonderful singing capabilities of the Filipinos.

Theodore Biele You have a wonderful family heritage. I also had family in Asia. My great-grandfather and two uncles were in Hong Kong during invasion. They along with a few British Marines, an American doctor, and number of Chinese resisted the Japanese for several months from the hills. They were unable to link up with more active resistance in the New Territories. With wounded and little water, they came in under the promise of a white flag and were summarily executed. Meanwhile, my grandfather was a surgeon with Lord General Slim's 14th Army, fighting from India eastward. A Chinese family had protected his father's diary, which remarkably they got to him as Britain re-took Hong Kong. The toughness, love and dedication shown by that generation is an amazing thing, as shown in your family story. I salute you and your father-in-law! Very best, Hugh.

+Hugo DBPHuguenot I've been to many places in Asia including HK and love every moment that I spent in those countries. In WW2, peopole gave their lives willingly! But, all I know of fought valiantly and did their best to survive. HK still has its British background and I love it. British and Chinese, seems to have provided one of the best amalgams of people that I have ever seen. By the way, I also love the Japanese and Japan. Another amalgam but, the old and the new exist side by side. Magnificent country and, Shinzo Abe seems to be the hope of japan's prosperity! Regards, Ted

What an awesome performance of this great classic! The way she sings and emotes at the same time, she is able to transport us to the streets of Jerusalem 2000 years ago. Lea alone does justice to the majestic sacrifice being told in the song. A fitting tribute, at least by earthly standard, to our Great Lord.
West Point did the right thing in getting Lea to perform this part.

It took too long, too long. My Tatay was on the Bataan Death March and survived to die in SF at the age of 86. He suffered a bullet wound in his right shoulder while escaping from Camp O'Donnel. A little punk Pinoy at that time who "gave one for the Gipper" in Reagan's words in one of his films. It took too long, too long to liberate the Philippines and the Filipinos are still bitter about this.

In reference to comments of D Hedlund... For such a beautiful and inspirational rendition of "Via Dolorosa" by Lea Salonga and the men a women of the West Point Glee Club, why would you post a repulsive political comment by an angry"hater", whose distorted and irresponsible comment has absolutely NOTHING to do with this video recording? To allow his vile, off-color and disgraceful remark to desecrate something so spiritually rousing is reprehensible. Every United States service academy graduate, like myself, should be disgusted at his kind of bigotry which he spews in the name of "our Creator"? We must acknowledge his views for what they are, a plague which must be eradicated. Our armed forces and country are harmed by the narrow-mindedness of these leeches, who try to negatively infect the ranks of the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces... We must discard, disassociate and ostracize his ridiculous comment and reject his distorted view, preserving honor and dignity among our ranks.

Are you sure you're not referring to Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Stalin, Tojo or Hitler?
Perhaps you'd be willing to explain?

I've heard a better version though - Sandi Patty's. And I'm a big Lea Salonga fan!

Agree the version of Lea has more heart and soul. It has a spiritual value to it

They were in fact focusing on the Soldiers not on Christ Jesus. What Jesus Did on the Cross is Incomparable. Although they are brave soldiers that song is not appropriate to be sung just to be dedicated for them.
