    As a British soldier that he led in 1991, I find it somehow surreal, he has passed. He has always been a legend to me. I'm now fifty, but time deceives a bit.

      It's scary isn't it. I remember that Christmas of 1990 wondering if father Christmas could get down the barrel of a tank like it was yesterday.
      I was a little 18 year old. Now I'm a 48 year old grandfather whose is almost as close to 70 as 30.
      Terrifying!

    I was honored to be on his aircrew when he was the CINC of Central Command. When it was time for fun, he was the best but when time to be serious, he was that. He made sure we were taken care of and made sure his troops were protected and taken care of during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. His wife, Brenda, we used to call her Mom for she made sure we had cookies, candy, and other things for our TDY's to the MidEast. One time she told me not to let Norm have anything out of the snacks for he was on a diet. I said ok and once he tried to sneak some cookies out of a bag. I caught him and told him that Mom said he couldn't have this type snack. He looked at me like a sad puppy and yes, I let him have some cookies. He had a patch on his flight suit that no one else had and I begged him for 2 years to let me have it. On his farewell tour, he gave it to me and I still cherish it. A great man and I am so honored to have known him and be on his aircrew for 3 years. God Bless General and Rest In Peace.

Saddam had created a major threat in the region to neighboring countries and instability in the whole region. Which would of affected us and most of the rest of the world eventually. Britain rightfully honoured this great military man by knighting him. So technically he was General Sir H. Norman Schwarzkopf KCB. Because he is not a British subject, General Schwarzkopf did not have to kneel and be tapped on the shoulder by Queen Elizabeth II when he was knighted. The Queen simply handed him a box containing the cross and silver star of the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He was only the ninth US military so honoured. And truly deserved.

    • @jimmyg.6885
      @jimmyg.6885 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Elizabeth II honorablely knighted both Gen. Schwarzkoph and Powell. But because neither is a British Subject, the 'sir' is only for that day.
      According to British Laws, and the Queen, only those born in Great Britain, Canada, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand can be knighted/damed with the OBE.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Jimmy G.
      Not quite correct my friend. They would not use the title 'Sir' or 'Dame' as they are not British Subjects and have no allegiance to Her Majesty but they do retain the Letters KCB after the name. There are different Knights Garter but I am afraid the OBE is not one. That is the Order of the British Empire.

    • @michaelbateman8469
      @michaelbateman8469 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You also have a violation of US law in that to fully accept a knighthood, one must bend the knee and swear fealty to the sovereign.

      That rank is in abeyance. When it was created, Congress specified the sailors and soldiers to be promoted. The subsequent promotions of Bradley and Halsey, plus the creation of a new rank for Arnold, also required Congressional approval. There is also the issue that creation of just one 0-11 would change our command structure enormously.

    So beautifully done .. a wonderful tribute for a truly inspirational gentle giant leader, human being! From the perspective I speak of someone, myself who has never served in the military .. although I received quite the education other than previous knowledge on the war, his roles, his incredible desire for peace . Closure. In the private sector after his retirement I had the honor of holding the role of his executive/ PR/ personal assistant with his private company black summit Inc after his retirement , which he created solely as he was retired from the military to serve the community, nonprofits, children, organizing annual fundraisers, there was so much more to this man he was truly a leader with a heart of gold! Serving his country until the day he died, in so many ways! I can't count the number of nonprofits he dedicated tirelessly time and financially too as well as serving as a board member most of these Charities were for children, also as he's often blamed for things like chemicals used in Desert Storm, among other things, he obviously did not create make or approve chemicals, had no part of making decisions, approving chemicals and many other details , as its role was to command at the same time taking orders from higher-ups although such an esteemed General he still took orders on many things. Thanks for this wonderful tribute and for sharing! I witnessed , was actually taken back at the level of what I experienced getting to know him, truly most genuine level a truly remarkable generous, loving nurturing spirit truly and one of the kindest human beings II have had the pleasure of knowing.. who loved his family as much or more than any other father, husband I've known he was truly generous and absolutely surprisingly down to earth with a depth that was inspiring. He paid myself and another executive assistant just spend a full time week every week for years, responding, personalizing autographing every Eagle Scout letter, tirelessly supporting as mentioned in several nonprofit boards he was a board member of and gave of like I said tireless too..
