Used to work in the tower, flight briefing and runway control/met office 1976 to 1982, got some scanned slides taken in the tower and lots of aircraft on the old and new airfield including the USAF Galaxy someone mentioned in the comments. The vertical ladder was always there and used when the lift wasn't working although most of us preferred to use the outside staircase!
I went up in 82, if I remember correctly the radar magnetron was low down the tower and the wave-guide went up the back. The tower was very cosy, I think I used the outside stairs, originally the space above the control had a neon beacon they went out of use in mid sixties when ILS and better radar came on line. Is it possible to take a car into the car park and visit the aircraft, I think that would make a nice walk for me and the dogs down memory lane.
@@nickaxe771 Old age and Wisdom means I have a head full of memories, one is my visit to the tower in the 80's with the Wirral Amateur Radio Club. I also have a lot of memory space occupied with British aviation related facts. It would be nice to take the dogs to visit those lovely aircraft especially that Gloster Meteor which is just like the one I played with as a boy in Lincolnshire.
I flew from the old airport a few times as a kid and in my teens, and this brought back some memories! I'd completely forgotten about the circular staircase, but the memory came back the instant I saw it! Thanks for that one.

That was great, never thought that would be possible to film there, so indeed a big thank you to the maintenance team for letting you see inside. It is such an iconic tower and that Beatles connection is hopefully something the Hotel could explore in creating perhaps some kind of photo exhibit or statues of the Beatles on that day in 64. It is well worth bringing that history back and could help with some tourism to the area.
I’m surprised that they have not preserved the Tower better. This is an iconic landmark and deserves to be kept in good condition. I didn’t think the air traffic control room was that small. Very interesting, good job.👍

This is going to sound daft but check the air in that tunnel before going too far. That is an "enclosed area" with no natural ventilation. There is rusty metal down there & rust is iron oxide which means the metal has sucked that oxygen out of the air... Not a problem if the air is circulating but in enclosed area it can lead to oxygen starvation which you don't know about until you fall over unconscious ... If you don't believe it could happen check out maib safety bul 3/2014 where 3 died on a boat in a rusty room.. note this isn't just a "one off" problem. My granddad was a labourer in the build in the 30s. In the 60s used to be taken to meet my old man coming home from sea after 9 month trips. I noticed planes at the back of the hotel are they now part of the Hotel experience or is there still a private runway as the new airport is a few miles away
George if you go onto the land behind gefco warehouse in speke , there's a brick building looks like a bin shed with no doors, it's covered in bullet holes in the brickwork . Originally it's what the guns sights were zeroed in for accuracy on fighter planes , I think triumph installed the planes engines , I saw a photo once of fighter planes being towed through the city centre on their way to having their engines installed
What a fantastic landmark in Liverpool I am that old now I can remember the vicars vicounts lined up ready for servicing I remember my dad telling me he had a job there just after the war there was a Indian there from USA? nicknamed RED who test flew the mustangs one day he took off and ended up in the mersey.
Jammy git! 😂 would love to have a look around there. Nice little piece to camera for the intro and outro, another good little evolution to your video style. Gives it a bit of a tv documentary feel 👍
Great video George. I remember going the airport when I was a kid to see the US Air Force Galaxy Transport Plane that landed there in the early 80's. It was absolutely massive!!
Under what used to be MetalBox down the road there was service tunnels. I had explored on and ended up under the second building at the rear. I got told the other ones went out to the old airport and out towards the Speke freight terminal.
George mate as luck would have it i was at that tesco in st.helens today and since the last time I was there they have now put up scaffolding around it and there was workers there today so it might be a no go that now. I used to go there in the 60s to wach the planes mostly Air Lingus and Dan Air loved it and great memories
Happy days i can remember going here once in 1984 i think to do the same
Amazing to see what’s in there. I’m surprised it’s not a usable space but fascinating nonetheless.
Yet again George ,another top vlog .👍👏👏
Thank you steve glad you enjoyed it
I noticed planes at the back of the hotel are they now part of the Hotel experience or is there still a private runway as the new airport is a few miles away
@@markfalshaw-gv9im they belong to the speke aerodrome presevation society those planes
Brilliant video mate ❤️👍
Thanks kev glad you enjoyed it matey
I flew from to Mallorca from speke airport in 81
Brilliant i would have only been 5 lol
Nice one for useing me oasis info mate belter picture comparison really appreciate that laa
Thanks i couldnt remember who.it was that told me and i literally just remembered before i went in lol
Thanks again marc
George if you go onto the land behind gefco warehouse in speke , there's a brick building looks like a bin shed with no doors, it's covered in bullet holes in the brickwork . Originally it's what the guns sights were zeroed in for accuracy on fighter planes , I think triumph installed the planes engines , I saw a photo once of fighter planes being towed through the city centre on their way to having their engines installed
Ive done that john a while back its somewhere in my video list
What a fantastic landmark in Liverpool I am that old now I can remember the vicars vicounts lined up ready for servicing I remember my dad telling me he had a job there just after the war there was a Indian there from USA? nicknamed RED who test flew the mustangs one day he took off and ended up in the mersey.
Wow!
I have ran up and down them stairs many times back in the day 😢
Happy days
Super cool that place Georgie.
A good overview of a load of roofs I've worked on from there, Matchworks, B&M, Shop Direct and the biggest, Prinovis.
Happy days matchworks roof would be great to have a nose along
Thanks for watching ian
Defo look forward to seeing that mate 👍
Best video to date for me George, really interesting could tell how excited you were!
Great
Those metal holders in the tunnel were pneumatic pipes witch were used to send messages to the control room and various offices in the building
Really wow thats great info i can use on my return visit
Thanks for watching paul
Flew from there to the IOM when I was young on a school trip
Recording guitars in that tunnel would be amazing😎
Imagine that would sound awesome i love these tunnels that through echos back down at you
Thanks for watching
Recording vocals would sound great too!
@@georgewhite1972 They definitely would
Under what used to be MetalBox down the road there was service tunnels. I had explored on and ended up under the second building at the rear. I got told the other ones went out to the old airport and out towards the Speke freight terminal.
Did somebody mention Prince? 17:57 ....😜😂😂©️💯🙏
George mate as luck would have it i was at that tesco in st.helens today and since the last time I was there they have now put up scaffolding around it and there was workers there today so it might be a no go that now. Still an i interesting relic from the past but yeah looks like they're working on it now.
Love it m8
I was told that it became a nightclub with a hotel on top before Marriott took it over.
How have they not turned that tower into a suite though.
@@tomwilson88 first ive heard of that one tom possible an unofficial one
How good would it be to have this as a suite id deffo be staying here imagine the scene at night up there
Thanks for watching btw
I stayed in that hotel a few years ago, I asked on the Saturday morning when I checked out if I could go up to the tower. Sadly there was no maintenance staff around so I couldn't:( I'll be going back to do just that
I always thought the control tower housed the executive hotel bedrooms!
There is a control tower suite but its under the control tower
My Grandad Wally!
See if you can stay a night in the tower, you might meet the ghost of Cpt Black
Be great to spend 24 hours in this place even
Brilliant idea. I am up for it 👍
Cracker this one George!! Where lucky to have a Liverpool and lesser areas 😁😁 tour guide of stuff you might have missed…👍👍
i remember when i was a kid in the summertime buying a bag of monkey nuts and a bottle of cream soda and travelling their on the 500 bus with my mate and sitting on that balcony where all the beatles fans were and watching the planes coming in and out and every now and then the airport fire dept would set fire to an old looking plane and train all of the other fire guys on the burning fuselage .....but after we ate the nuts and drank the the lemo we would sneak into the lounges and watch these like space helmet tv's with the credit that was left on them from the out going passengers ........ pity there are no public viewing areas in john lennon airport ....good days great memories
I remember once goimg here in about.84 i think thats my only memory of this place
Its mad isnt it how easy it was back then to just walk into an airport and sit and watch planes on the runway which was only feet away
Goodtimes
Used to go to Palmer on Cambrian air ways a BAC 1 11 my dad was a bobby he got told to go there a young 25 year old cop
Oasis can not be compared with the Brilliant Beatles .Great content tho .
did you wear gas detector? tunnel looks like no ventilation so could easily have gas
@@jonathanpringle8238 nope and i lived to tell the tale
I can taste the asbestos from here!
Enjoy!
Dunno why the hotel doesn't use it as a place to have drinks.
Only access is from the roof health and saftey and all that unfortunatley
Oasis as the 2nd Beatles? Really? 😂
I was awaitng this comment lol
Great video, have all the migrants gone from there? I tried to look at the planes a year ago they wouldn't let me near the place
Cheers thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
The hotel is back to a guest hotel now
Yeah, they've migrated to another hotel somewhere in the UK!
@@mrlister2000 there in most hotels now, glad there's not many up in the North east
You can come to see the planes now. The heritage group meets up every Saturday
@mikemac803 I live in Newcastle, if I come back to Liverpool I will
Fabulous stuff, shame the radio equipment had gone 😢
@@JestersDeadUK i was hoping to see lots of old radio gear but still a fantastic place to see that not many people have seen
